Grameen Ghana, with support from Global Giving, has donated reading materials to the Bolni D/A primary school in the Nanumba North Municipality of the Northern Region.

Grameen Ghana is a non-governmental organization working in the north with a focus on issues relating to food, nutrition and post-harvest loss.

The organization has noted that the lack of reading materials negatively affects teaching and learning in the school.

The Programmes Manager for Grameen Ghana, Mr Mugmin Musah, said the gesture is to ensure that pupils have access to some reading material in order to improve their work in school.

“The school lacks reading materials and a lot of children cannot read. This is a big worry because even in the upper primary, very few children could read, 3 out of 30 children could read and we think that lack of access to reading materials is contributing greatly to this particular challenge.”

He expressed hope that teachers and parents will help the children to utilize the learning materials that are supplied so that a lot more children will take up reading as well.

The head teacher of the school, Samson Nikpe Sanja, expressed his gratitude to Grameen for the gesture saying the materials have come at the right time

He also pledged to ensure that the materials are put to good use.

Parents also expressed their joy for the support from Grameen Ghana saying this, and other interventions by the organization have greatly eased the pressure of buying school materials for their wards.

They also pledged to ensure that their wards put the materials they had been given to the best use possible.

Some youth suspected to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party, backed by the Nanumba North District Chief Executive, Abdulai Yaquob, have taken control of the community water system at Binbcheratanga in the Nanumba North District of Northern Region.

This has led to a water shortage over the past four days in Binbcheratanga, forcing residents to trek long distances to a single borehole for water at the risk of cholera.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bsjPwgmftQL2NAKe0Nx6tkRoXqLH5jBV”]The chief of Binbcheratanga, Naa Andani Azuma, recounted to Citi News that, NPP youth came to him demanding to manage the water system by taking over from the old management.

“A group of young men came to my palace asking me to hand over the keys to my water plant to them. I asked them why and the told me they the NPP youth now want to manage the system because their party is in power,” the chief said.

Naa Andani Azuma added that, he intended to wait for an official directive from the DCE, and later that evening, he said he “received a letter from the DCE directing me to hand over the keys.”

“The youth then came again and told me to give them the keys and I asked them who their leader was and they couldn’t answer. I again refused and around three pm on Monday, the DCE himself came and collected the keys.”

The old management of the facility, which was constituted on a non-partisan basis, was given three months training on how to manage the system, but it appears the current managers have been operating without the required expertise.

Women and children suffering

“Now women and children are suffering. They can’t get water. The taps are not flowing,” Naa Andani Azuma added.

The situation has greatly inconvenienced the farming community stalling farming activities, as some residents lamented.

“When day breaks, children don’t have water to bath before they go to school. We are all farmers so women have to search for water before they go to the farm which takes them maybe a whole day so we can’t work. We fight among ourselves and it will take you ten hours before you get one drum of water to the house,” one resident told Citi News.

Citi News has not been able to reach the Nanumba North DCE’s for comment.

There have been several cases of political vigilantism by perceived youth of the party, since the NPP took over office in January 2017.

The government has been accused of not biting enough in most of the cases, a situation that many believes emboldens more people to engage in these acts.

The District Security Council (DISEC) at Bimbilla in the Northern Region, has said a review of the curfew in the township is long overdue.

According to him, the youth who are mostly used by the feuding factions have promised to live peacefully.

The Interior Ministry had placed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on the town following some protracted chieftaincy conflicts in the area which has claimed 40 lives in the last decade.

[contextly_sidebar id=”IuNDi48HUDFD6rORMOI0jQdwtTo77e2m”]But residents of the town have decried the curfew hours saying it has affected their socio-economic activities hence the need for a review.

Speaking to Citi News, the District Chief Executive for  Nanumba North, Abdulai Yaqoub, said the District Security Council (DISEC), had earlier recommended a review of the curfew.

“DISEC has recommended the review from 8:00pm to 10:00pm for now, and we are monitoring the situation. If the situation still remains as it is, then we can consider reviewing it to 12:00pm; and eventually remove it completely. I think it is even long overdue because if you check, the conflicts always happen during day time and not during the curfew hours,” the DCE said.

Abdulai Yaqoub also added that, “the youth have come together and have resolved that they want to also help us in attaining peace in the area.”

“In view of this, we met as a district security committee, and then looked at the security situation and recommended to REGSEC for the review of the curfew. REGSEC have met, according to information available to me, and they’ve also made a recommendation to the Interior Minister for the curfew to be reviewed. So very soon I’m sure they will hear the curfew being reviewed by the Minister of Interior,” he added.

Actionaid Ghana in collaboration with Songtaba has told staff of the Nanumba South District Assembly to value women’s work at a training.

The sensitization was to create awareness of men and society to appreciate women’s work in the home.

The sensitization is part of a five-year project that is being undertaken by Actionaid in collaborations with Songtaba under a project caption “POWER PROJECT” with funding from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

Speaking to Citi News, the project officer for the power project, Madam Abdallah Safura mentioned some of the effects of unpaid care work on women. She said, women are most often not educated as a result.

‘’ The role the women play in performing unpaid care work is really a burden and continues to violate the women’s basic human rights and contributes to the persistent gender inequality.

Women and girls shoulder a greater responsibility for unpaid care work.

Many women rely on smallholder farming and agriculture-related economic activities to discharge this responsibility to ensure the welfare and sustenance of families.

Unpaid care work is work done by women and girls mostly at home without receiving economic reward, and is often unrecognized, and takes most of their time and energy, thereby limiting their ability to engage in leisure, and other economic activities.

This includes caring for children, the sick, and the elderly, collecting fuel wood and water, cooking meals and maintaining shelter and the home, are as crucial to the daily life of a family as to the health of a national economy. Yet despite its importance, it is not valued by society,’’ she noted

Madam Safura, therefore, called on the government and other stakeholders to provide the needed tools and environment to ease the burden of the women.

She called for assistance from men for the women to ensure that the unpaid care work is redistributed.

Stakeholders in the Nanumba North District of the Northern Region, have urged the Supreme Court to expedite action on the Bimbilla Chieftaincy dispute, which has become a major hindrance to development in the district.

The stakeholders made the appeal at a three-day district medium-term development plan review workshop in the district.

The workshop brought together all departments and developmental partners working in the district to review their activities from 2014 to 2017, the challenges and successes they chalked over the period under review and the way forward.

During the presentations by the various departments and development partners, a number of challenges were identified.

The recurring Bimbilla chieftaincy conflict was noted as the number one challenge hindering developmental activities in the district. The bad road network, sanitation and falling standard of education were some of the topmost challenges facing the district’s developmental goals.

Despite these challenges, the district won an award for sanitation and was given an amount of twenty thousand pounds sterling (£20,000) to help improve the sanitation situation in the district.

On the security situation, the workshop called on the government to assist the Supreme Court to expedite action in the determination of the Bimbilla chieftaincy case which is currently before it.

It also called on the interior ministry to do something about the curfew imposed on the Bimbilla township citing how the curfew has affected lives and the socio-economic activities in the district.

The area is currently enjoying relative peace, and they made a passionate appeal for a further review of the curfew hours or a total removal as it would help in the development of the district.

In the end, the workshop was able to come out with a comprehensive medium-term development plan that would assist the district to draw it’s medium term development plan.
