Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has been referred to the party’s Disciplinary Committee following some the unsubstantiated allegations he made against his party in a leaked recording that has gone viral.

The decision was arrived on after he met with the party’s Steering Committee on Wednesday to answer for his actions.

[contextly_sidebar id=”BQ5V5GwPOUCGQE58HBDCWJ4ICL1Soy5G”]Though Mr. Obiri Boahen gave his side of the story, the Steering Committee said it did not wish to take any action on one of their own hence the referral to the Disciplinary Committee.

The Disciplinary Committee will write to Mr. Obiri Boahen and announce a date for his appearance.

The NPP Deputy General Secretary has since apologized for his comments.

The allegations

Mr. Obiri Boahen, in the leaked phone conversation he had with an activist of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Skirt, claimed that, the presidency gave the party an amount of GHc 50 billon for it’s annual delegates conference in Cape Coast in 2017, a claim the NPP has since denied.

Mr. Boahen also claimed that despite playing a key role in NPP’s victory in the last general elections, he had been ignored since the party came into power.

He had stated that the party had failed to provide him with an official car for his work, adding that “I don’t remember the last time I received a monthly salary from the party.”

“Till date, I don’t even have an office at the party’s headquarters. To be frank, I have been using my own private car, and the party has not given me any official car for my use as Deputy General Secretary. I buy my own fuel. And even on official trips abroad, I’ll be left to my fate. When I recently went to Germany, it was an NPP Member who bought a ticket for me. I went to Spain, Dortmund it was an individual that processed my trip. I do virtually everything, and I don’t remember the last time I received a monthly salary from the party,” he said in the leaked tape.

The governing New Patriotic Party has tasked its Steering Committee to investigate Nana Obiri Boahen, the party’s Deputy General Secretary,  for alleging that the presidency donated about GHc50 billion towards the party’s 2017 National Annual Delegates Conference held in Cape Coast in the Central Region.

According to the party, the allegation is “palpable falsehood” and “indeed, Nana Obiri Boahen himself has subsequently admitted to the falsity of his baseless allegation.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”GfKK5M4PDAmwDQBqRhYxak5zhb32I8iI”]“Nonetheless, the party takes serious view of his unfortunate comments and has accordingly tasked the Steering Committee to immediately look into the matter and make appropriate recommendations,” the NPP said in a statement signed by its acting General Secretary, John Boadu.

Obiri Boahen in a leaked telephone conversation that has gone viral complained bitterly about some happenings in the NPP and lamented that he has been sidelined in the sharing of the national cake.

In the audio, Obiri Boahen is heard alleging that despite being faithful to the NPP even when they were in opposition, he is not benefiting like others are doing.

He among other things alleged that the presidency gave out GHc50 billion in support of the party’s Delegates conference held in 2017 in Cape Coast.

“When we were going to Cape Coast the other time, I was given GH¢3,000 as a member of the Resolution Committee and an additional GH¢2,000 for fuel. Meanwhile, the Flagstaff House gave the party an amount of GH¢50 billion,” Boahen alleged in the audio.

The NPP in the statement said it is awaiting the recommendation of the Steering Committee to make a determination on the matter.

Below is the full statement from the NPP:

NPP RESPONDS TO LEAKED OBIRI BOAHEN’S TAPE

The attention of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been drawn to a secret recording making rounds on social media involving the deputy general secretary of the party, Nana Obiri Boahen, in which he alleged that the Flagstaff House advanced an amount of “GHC 50 billion” to the NPP in support of the conduct of the party’s 2017 National Annual Delegates Conference held at Cape Coast.

The party wishes to place on record that, no such thing happened and that, the claims are a palpable falsehood.

Indeed, Nana Obiri Boahen himself has subsequently admitted to the falsity of his baseless allegation.

Nonetheless, the party takes serious view of his unfortunate comments and has accordingly tasked the Steering Committee to immediately look into the matter and make appropriate recommendations.

Finally, we wish to assure our members and the Ghanaian people that, the NPP is scrupulously minded of the line that exists between government and the party and would uphold the distinction at all times.

Thank you.

The Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party [NPP], Nana Obiri Boahen, has told Citi News that the party’s leadership will meet today [Monday], to address all the legal issues that have plagued the party’s constituency elections across the country.

The constituency elections, which are expected to end on Tuesday, February 27, have seen some aggrieved parties take legal action against individuals, whiles others are challenging some of the processes leading to the polls.

[contextly_sidebar id=”L3E1iXy4O2H0HONjJ4JPPr2TEH0hAmgG”]In constituencies such as Cape Coast South, Suame, Ahafo-Ano South among others, the elections were halted by court injunctions.

Speaking to Citi News, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen, said the party would prefer to settle all legal issues out of court.

“We are going to resolve most of these problems. Some of these injunctions have been served to us at the headquarters. We will be able to resolve them. If it is a matter of settling it out of court, we are competent and capable of doing that. If it is a matter of fighting it in court, we are able to do that. From Monday, the national leadership will meet and take a look at most of the issues before court and we will find the way forward.”

“Nobody is interested in litigation, but where it is highly impossible and practically improbable to settle the matters out of court, the only option is to go to court,” he said.

Meanwhile, for security reasons, five constituencies in the Northern Region were isolated from the nationwide constituency elections which started on Saturday February 24, 2018.

The constituencies are Yunyoo, Bimbila, Daboya/Mankarigu, Nalerigu/Gambaga and Karaga, which were identified as political hotspots.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has denied reports that it is meddling in the impending presidential elections in Kenya.

Reports of the NPP’s alleged involvement was captured in some media outlets in Kenya following the deportation of the party’s Campaign Manager of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the just ended 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, Peter Mac Manu over the weekend.

Mac Manu was said to be leading a team of Democratic Union of Africa (DUA) International Observers to Kenya’s General Elections to be held on August 8, 2017.

Agents of Kenya’s ruling party alleged the NPP was supporting the opposition leader Raila Odinga to create a parallel election tally result platform, just like it did in the December elections in Ghana.

But the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahene said those allegations are false.

In an interview with Citi News, he said Mac Manu’s presence in the East African country had no influence on the upcoming polls.

“They said they will not allow Peter Mac Manu to go there and it is a serious indication that things are not going on well. How do you accuse the NPP in Ghana that they want to rig the elections? This primitive way of handling matters ongoing in Kenya, we need to be serious about it.”

Meanwhile, former President, John Dramani Mahama is leading a 15-member Commonwealth Observer Group to monitor and report on the August 08, 2017 election.

Incumbent President, Uhuru Kenyatta, who beat Raila Odinga in the previous election to become president, is facing a stiff competition from Odinga again to retain power.

Members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been urged not to use violence to oppose President Akufo-Addo choice of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.

Ahead of the announcement, some groups in various parts of the country have given strong indications they will resist appointees of a certain caliber who they believe would not serve their interest.

But the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen said the supporters must respect the President’s decision.

He said all party members must be willing to accept the president decisions.

“If every member of the party will adopt the posture of my good self, you’ll realize that ever since the nomination of this MMDCE thing started, I have kept a very low profile. Low profile in the sense that I have not involved myself actively in the issue of whoever becomes MMDCE…For whoever is selected or nominated as the MMDCE, I think that we should not be seen to be quarrelling over it,” he said.

It is feared that some groups who are aggressively lobbying for their preferred choice of MMDCE may cause chaos if the president appoints a candidate other than theirs.

President Akufo-Addo, who has the constitutional mandate of naming MMDCEs, is expected to announce the final list of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executive appointees on Wednesday [April 26, 2017].

In a related development a group, calling itself the Concerned Youth of Atiwa, demonstrated on Tuesday to put pressure on President Akufo-Addo,  to appoint a District Chief Executive (DCE) from Atiwa East, to represent the Atiwa District in the Eastern Region.

The group, numbering about 200, marched through the principal streets of Anyinam, with placards indicating their unpreparedness to have a DCE from Atiwa West.

According to the spokesperson for the group, Dr. Samuel Ofori, all previous DCE appointees over the last 16 years, hailed from Atiwa West, and so the group believes that the new government must endeavor to appoint one from Atiwa East this time.
