The Managing Director of the State Transport Company (STC), Nana Akomea is urging Ghanaians not to view new developments at the company through partisan lenses.

He said the efforts of the previous management of the company under the John Mahama government must be appreciated since it helped transform the company.

In a facebook post on Friday he said the former Managing Director, Nuamah Donkor oversaw the acquisition of 50 state of the art buses last year to help revamp the venerable state company.

“I am encouraged by the interest in STC affairs expressed by Ghanaians on Facebook and elsewhere.
I will plead that the transformation of this venerable state institution is not turned into an NPP-NDC rivalry,” he said.

“Hon Nuamah Donkor and his team played a great role in bringing STC back. They oversaw the acquisition of 50 state of the art buses/coaches in October last year. Indeed one newly revamped station is proposed to be named for Nuamah Donkor,” he added.

Nana Akomea, who was appointed Managing Director of the STC in April, 2017 by the Akufo-Addo government said the new management of the company is “building on this to totally transform the operations of STC and return it to profitability.”

In his post, he announced that “firm arrangements have been concluded to triple STC fleet strength by December 2017.”

Among other developments at the STC he said were the retraining and rebranding of drivers, introduction of female cabin crew members and fixing of the inconsistent wifi.

Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, the Minister of Transport, has inaugurated the Board of Directors for the Intercity State Transport Corporation Coaches Limited (ISTC) with a call on them to ensure its smooth running.

The Board members include Mr Samuel Oppong, Chairman; Nana Akomea, the Managing Director as the Deputy Board Chairman.

Other members of the Board are Mr Daniel Soglo from the Ministry of Transport, Mr Hayford Kofi Nimoh, Alhaji Musah Mumuni, Mr Jaezi Orleans-Lindsay and Mrs Eva Mens from the Ministry of Finance.

Representatives from the Social Security and National Insurance Trust are serving as members.

The Minister urged the Board not to interfere in the operations of the management of the company but to give them technical advice to ensure efficiency.

He said there is the need to work toward a vision where ultra modern terminals and commercial facilities are developed to provide the quality service required by passengers.

Mr Asiamah said a 21.7 acre land belonging to the company had reduced to 9 acres due to temporary and permanent structures mounted by encroachers and this has the tendency to impede future developments.

The Sector Minister urged the Board to work with the management to ensure that all unauthorised structures were demolished.

He also urged them to adopt and introduce modern technology with the aim of improving revenue generation in the company and assured them of the Ministry’s support for them to deliver their mandate.

Mr Oppong said financial management operation in the areas of ticketing and many other areas would be provided by the Board to assist the company yield the necessary result for the development of the country.

The newly appointed Managing Director of the State Transport Company, (STC), Nana Akomea, has revealed that he personally convinced President Akufo-Addo to give him the position in January this year, after the party won the December polls.

According to him, he did so with the idea of helping to make the transport company profitable.

[contextly_sidebar id=”xFNIHOlInSlRHwEVwHElmn6GBajS2Z7r”]Responding to allegations he had rejected the appointment, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said there was no way he would reject an appointment he had earlier asked for.

Nana Akomea in an earlier interview with an Accra-based FM station said, “I have told the President the position I want to occupy and he has agreed. There are laid down procedures for appointing a Chief Executive for that institution and so there is the need to follow the process so that the President will not violate the law.”

“The president is going through the process. When he is done, he will make my appointment public.” But there were rumours that Nana Akomea had rejected the appointment by President Akufo-Addo.

However, in a facebook post on April 27, 2017, Nana Akomea said, such rumours by faceless persons were false and “just for comic relief.”

“There is some post on social media that l have refused the president’s nomination of myself as chief executive of the venerable state transport company.  This post by some faceless person is just for comic relief I had convinced the president for this assignment way back in January, to do a specific job of bringing the STC back into profitability. So how can l be reported to be upset about an appointment l myself had asked for.?”

The Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that concerns about the size of President Akufo-Addo’s government are legitimate and in order, just as the party raised similar concerns while in opposition.

He however said the President believes he needs the numbers to honor the numerous promises he made to Ghanaians in the run up to the 2016 elections.

He suggested that the President must be given the benefit of doubt, and be judged by the outcome of his governance.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1tHzdcyStpFHwUQ3MeyE1XNhuydBK8xz”]The President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has come under heavy criticism after appointing more than one hundred (100) ministers to serve in his government; a move some electorates describe as betrayal of trust following pre-election assurances that he [Akufo-Addo] will ensure a prudent and efficient government.

But according to Nana Akomea, there will be no concerns if the president duly delivers on his promises regardless of the numbers.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, March 16, 2017, Nana Akomea admitted that, the size of the Akufo-Addo government, is the highest in the country’s history, but added that, his mandate and promises to Ghanaians were also the boldest and revolutionary.

It will be recalled that Mr. Akomea in March 2013 criticized the then government, led by John Mahama for its many ministerial appointments.

He said he was “horribly disappointed” in John Mahama for appointing 86 ministers and deputies then, to serve in his government.

But it appears Mr. Akomea has relaxed his stance on the size of government after his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) broke the existing record of 93 ministers by the NPP’s John Agyekum Kufour.

The Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea has revealed that government may launch a full scale audit into the building of the new Vice Presidential residence at $14 million dollars.

Nana Akomea, who recently released documents to support Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia’s earlier claims about the cost of the building told Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show that the he could not understand why the government committed to paying such an amount for the project.

[contextly_sidebar id=”nM0bpeOl6zXiBpeEDqvqcL0OGmXnU6A5″]“I think and I believe that is what the government will do. Is for to do a value for money auditing because this is a sole sourced contract and we all know some of the problems associated with sole sourcing.”

He said, “since 1993 we have had a residence for the Vice President of Ghana in which Arkaah, Attah-Mills, Aliu Mahama and John Mahama stayed and it was even fit for him to stay there as President and so the propriety of committing tax payers’ monies to the tune of $14 million to build another residence for the Vice President of Ghana in the light of some of the deprivations of the Ghanaians people are issues that all of us have to interrogate.”

According to Mr Akomea, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government had already paid eight million dollars to the contractor for the execution of the project but the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by Nana Akufo-Addo believes the contract terms are outrageous.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, last week expressed shock after finding out that the official residence under construction for the country’s Vice Presidents, would cost the country a total of $13.9 million dollars.

Speaking at the Action Chapel Good Corporate Governance Initiative, Dr. Bawumia said the government would take a closer look at the Public Procurement Act, to cease the resort to sole-source procurement which he believed promoted corruption.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned attack on the Nima residence of its flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo on Sunday morning by some supporters of the National Democratic Congress.

The NPP in a statement signed by its Director of Communications, Nana Akomea accused Mr Ako Gunn, an NDC supporter and famed member of the ‘montie 3 saga’ of leading the attacks against the NPP members and at the residence.

Citi News earlier reported that scores of party supporters of both parties had clashed at the Nima residence of Akufo-Addo for reasons yet to be made public.

According to the statement, the incident was a deliberate orchestration of the NDC to “create an environment of fear within Ghana 24 days to the election.”

It said the act was one of the NDC’s moves to “bait the NPP into responding in similar fashion.”

The NPP further said the incident was a threat to the integrity and democracy of the country and must not be tolerated.

Read the full statement below:

The NPP wishes to condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the latest provocation by the NDC in attacking the home of our Flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Early this morning, a large crowd of NDC supporters led by one Ako Gunn, one of the Muntie 3 who was recently pardoned by President Mahama after being jailed for threatening to rape and murder the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, massed up in front of the home of Nana Addo, and violently attacked the security detail outside the presidential candidate’s house. We thank the police for their speedy and invaluable intervention.

The motive for this act is not in doubt. The NDC was clearly there for one reason and one reason only: to assault NPP supporters and create an environment of fear within Ghana 24 days to the election.

This action was premeditated and unquestionably violent. Amassing NDC supporters outside of the NPP Flagbearer’s house is part of a broad range of calculated, violent, and provocative acts designed to bait the NPP into responding in similar fashion.

Such behavior is a threat to the integrity of our democracy and must not be tolerated.

We call on the National Peace Council, the Christian Council, and all Civil Society Organisations to let their voices be heard in condemnation of this violent act.

…signed…

Nana Akomea

(Director of Communications)
