President Nana Akufo-Addo has commissioned a $55.50 million water project for the people of Jambusie at Wa in the Upper West Region.

The Water Project, which was constructed with a facility from the Korean Exim Bank, will supply 3.3 million gallons of water per day to the 100,705 residents of Wa.

Commissioning the Project, President Akufo-Addo described it as a very happy day for him, especially as the project was started “at the time of the great Ghanaian leader, John Agyekum Kufuor.”

The President noted that “it was in his (President Kufuor’s) time that the financing for this project was secured, as far back as 2008. But, unfortunately, after he left [office in 2008], it took five years under the NDC governments before the construction of the project began.”

“God has his own way of doing things. A project that was begun by Kufuor is going to be commissioned by Akufo-Addo. That is the way the Almighty works,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo urged residents of Wa to “look after the project and make sure you use the water with care. Turn off the taps [when not in use], continue to conserve water, and settle the little bills that would come, so that the project would continue to run and provide you with the service.”

The President commissioned the project on Monday as part of two-day tour of the region.

Residents of Bawku are to be given a one-month moratorium to return their guns for cash.

The details of the “guns for cash” deal will be worked out at a meeting between the Interior Minister, Mr Mark Woyongo, and the National Security Council Secretariat.

After the one-month amnesty period, those who fail to hand over their guns will be sought after, arrested and prosecuted.

Minister

In an interview with the Daily Graphic after meeting with factions in the protracted Bawku dispute, Mr Woyongo said there were far too many guns in the Bawku area.

Those guns, he said, were fueling the conflict, as some gun owners occasionally tested the guns through sporadic shootings, stressing that some of them felt excited with such open displays.

He said the essence of the exercise was to get rid of all illegal weapons in the area.

According to him, when the details of the programme were announced, the dates and how much was to be paid would be included in the final details.

Information

Mr Woyongo said after the one-month moratorium, the security agencies would go all out to retrieve the weapons.

He explained that the security agencies would use intelligence and metal detectors, among other methods, to retrieve the weapons.

As to whether he was not giving out too much information, Mr Woyongo said “I have not told them when the exercise will start”.

The minister appealed to residents to be forthcoming with information to enable the security agencies to retrieve the weapons.

Mr Woyongo said it was the residents who were suffering from the curfew imposed on the municipality and the ban on riding motorbikes, hence the need for them to take keen interest in resolving the dispute.

That, he said, was the only way to enable them to return to a normal life.

Clashes

Recent clashes in the area have claimed at least three lives within the past week.

The Bawku Municipal Security Council has assured the families of Alhassan Hadi and Tijani Issaka, the two victims of Thursday’s fatal shooting incident in the Municipality, that the culprits will be found.

The two men were killed and two others injured when the group they were in was shot at, reportedly by two unknown assailants.

The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Issaku Bukari, told Citi News  confirmed that the bodies of the  two victims of the shooting had been buried adding that “the other two who sustained injures are responding to treatment.”

The Divisional Police Commander of Bawku, Chief Superintendent Tefutor Kaletsi said that the issue was not linked to the protracted conflict in Bawku and that no arrests had so far been made.

However, the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, Issaku Bukari, told Citi News that the Security Council has mapped out strategies “to find the perpetrators of the crime.”

“We have a lot of surveillance on the ground to identify the culprits.

“The security (council) are investigating the issue and have met the families of the victims.”

There are concerns that the incident might spark reprisal attacks in an already volatile municipality, but Issah Bukari insisted that the security council was in control of the issue.

“We have assured them (the families of the victims) that those who are involved will be arrested and the law will take its course.”

The Bawku Central youth wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused government of mismanaging the economy.

According to the youth, the economy is in a mess since the average Ghanaian cannot afford basic healthcare.

Speaking after a cleanup exercise organized by the youth in Bawku, the Director of Communications for the Bawku Central NPP,  Nurudeen Guma said the priority of every Ghanaian is to have access to basic healthcare but  this is impossible because of the extreme economic hardships.

“As Ghanaians, getting good healthcare is topmost priority because if you are not healthy, there is nothing you can do, but the NDC government is messing up the economy. People are struggling just to get good healthcare. We cannot afford to go to the hospital because you will end up paying for the services even though you are on the National Health Insurance Scheme. This government has messed up the NHIA,” he stated.

He also took a swipe at the government for their failed promises saying, “look at the Bawku -Bolga road. The late President Atta-Mills promised to fix this and even the president has been here and he also made the same promise but the road is yet to be fixed. You will spend three hours on a seventy-eight kilometer road. Why should that be so?
