Rihanna has never been shy of speaking her mind and her latest views, on the status of transgender models, have been widely praised on social media.

The singer was asked by a fan to consider using a trans woman to promote her Fenty Beauty make-up range.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with many gifted trans women over the years,” she replied, “but I don’t go around doing trans castings!”

“I respect all women. Whether they’re trans or not is none of my business.”

The star went on to criticise firms who hire models from minority groups as a “token” gesture.

“I don’t think it’s fair that a trans woman, or man, be used as a convenient marketing tool,” she said.

“Too often I see companies doing this to trans and black women alike.

“There’s always just that one spot in the campaign for the token ‘we look mad diverse’ girl/guy! It’s sad!”

  • Rihanna dominates NERD’s comeback single
  • Rihanna’s carnival costume goes viral

The conversation took place between Rihanna and a fan called @lbertootero via private messages Twitter. He then took a screen grab of the star’s comments and made them public.

Many fans praised the pop star’s stance.

“As a trans woman I have so much admiration and respect for Rihanna,” wrote one user. “She worded all of that so perfectly and respectful and kind. She’s a true angel.”

“Good on Rihanna to not want to exploit trans women just for the sake of marketing,” added @silbiee, who posts under the name Heart Shaker.

“I’m proud of my idol,” said a Chilean user called Francisca , while US fan Jason simply called Rihanna “queen of lgbt”.

Rihanna has already received praise for her Fenty Beauty line, which caters to a wider range of skin tones and types than most mainstream brands.

She also refuses to test her products on animals, meaning the range will not be available in China where animal testing is required by law.

A global arena tour and a few million more album sales earned Adele £40m last year, according to the Sunday Times Rich List.

The pop star’s fortune rose from £85m to £125m – meaning she’s the richest solo female musician in the paper’s annual wealth survey.

But she’s only joint 19th in the list of the UK and Ireland’s richest music acts, which is dominated by older men.

Sir Paul McCartney is in the top spot with £780m with wife Nancy Shevell.

They are followed by West End mogul Lord Lloyd-Webber, U2, Sir Elton John, Sir Mick Jagger and his Rolling Stones bandmate Keith Richards.

Adele is tied in 19th place on £125m with Queen guitarist Brian May.

The rise in her bank balance was put down to a 122-date global arena tour, which has earned an estimated £138m at box offices, and the continued success of her third album 25, which sold 2.4 million copies around the world in 2016.

The singer will play four sold-out shows at Wembley Stadium this summer – but has hinted that she may not tour again after that, which could limit her future earnings.

The special characteristics of music, when well harnessed in schools at all levels, could aid the social and physical development of students, Professor Joshua Adebisi Omotosho of the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, has observed.

He has consequently admonished all education instructors at all levels to incorporate music into their lessons.

Prof. Omotosho who is a visiting Professor currently lecturing at the Department of Educational Foundations of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) made the observation at a public lecture on Wednesday as part of the University’s occasional lecture series.

He spoke on the topic “That songs are the most enduring memoirs of my childhood has implications for counselling, research and some feeding habits”, made the lecture very interesting when he interspersed it with singing to the admiration of the audience.

The Guidance and Counselling Professor said incorporating music into lessons would arouse students’ interest in the subjects they teach, make teaching friendly to them and also stimulate their intellectual development.

According to him, songs have special characteristics which ordinary learning materials did not have and were more easily decoded and retained than other types of materials and as such could be beneficial in the teaching of special subjects.

Prof Omotoisho described music as a tool, which helps to educate the individual through its messages and help take initiatives and enable students to be innovative.

Using his school days as an example and citing scholars who have researched into music, he said research had proven how music therapy made people brilliant and alert.

Prof Omotosho suggested to UCC to conduct an inter disciplinary research into other food crop such as “Asoa fruit” which its findings could re-affirm the University as a trail-blazer institution both in its contribution to making improved living standards and in attracting huge local and foreign grants and awards.

He commended Ghana for its public address system saying “its a good treasure which needs to be enshrined in the laws”.

Singer Laura Mvula has revealed she found out she was dropped by her record label Sony via e-mail.

In January, her former manager met the label and was told face-to-face that Mvula’s contract would not be renewed.

But the Mercury-nominated musician told the BBC that she only found out about it from a forwarded email, which was seven lines long.

“I didn’t see anyone, I didn’t hear anybody’s voice. I just read words. It felt so cold and cruel,” she said.

“Not even the fact that I was dropped, the way that the whole thing happened. To be treated like that doesn’t feel quite just.”

Sony confirmed the sequence of events, but declined to comment further.

The 30-year-old was signed to Sony subsidiary RCA Victor five years ago, in a five-album deal.

Laura Mvula
Mvula’s debut album Sing to the Moon was released in 2013

Her debut Sing to the Moon was released in 2013 and Mvula earned Brit, Mercury and Ivor Novello nominations, as well as Mobo and Urban Music awards.

But her next album, The Dreaming Room, sold less well and failed to break into the top 10 when it was released in June 2016.

Seven months later, Laura revealed on Twitter that Sony had dropped her. But she did not say how.

“I was definitely naive in the beginning,” she said. “When I was signed, I thought when someone says, we love you and we’re with you until the end, that’s what they mean.”

But, she laughed ruefully: “It doesn’t work like that, it’s business.

Laura Mvula
Mvula said being dropped was a “huge wake up call”

“It’s about money, it’s about sales. And that has certain implications if you are not popular or there aren’t enough elements in what you do that draws in the masses.

“The album culture is, ‘Momentum, please… when’s the next record coming?'”

She recalled receiving the e-mail, which thanked her for her efforts and wished her the best for the future.

“First I was confused, I didn’t understand. I was always told I was such a valued part of what Sony had become today – I was an artist who was taking risks and doing things that are fresh and genuinely new – I believed them.

“I guess in my head I always thought there would be a conversation, a renegotiation, but never a kinda, ‘it’s over’.

“It’s been a huge wake up call,” she added.

Prince
Mvula says she was inspired by encouragement from her friend Prince

Mvula remembered a conversation she had with her friend, the singer-songwriter Prince, before he died in April 2016.

“He urged me, Mvula you have the music. Find the means to own your own thing and do it yourself. And at the time I remember hearing those words and thinking, yeah but you’re Prince, it’s all right for you.

“But I think actually, now I reflect, I understand what he was saying.

“I don’t have any regrets, because I think we made,” she corrected herself and laughed again, “I made two great records with them.”

But at a time when Mvula said she felt “rejected by the mainstream” she was asked to write the music for a new production of Antony and Cleopatra staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Laura Mvula
Laura Mvula
Mvula has composed the music for a new RSC production of Antony and Cleopatra

It is the first time she has composed for a professional theatre production. “This is a huge moment for me creatively,” she said.

But while Shakespeare and soul music may not seem obvious partners, the collaboration should not come as a surprise. Mvula studied composition at the Birmingham Conservatoire for four years.

And she revealed that writing music for the tragic love story is a dream come true.

“This is what I’ve wanted to do since I was 12 or 13, write music for theatre and film. And here’s my first gig… and it’s not a bad first gig.”

Mvula said she “knew immediately” how she wanted her music for the play to sound.

“I had this palette forming that was somewhere between Prince’s Purple Rain and Miles Davis’s Sketches of Spain.

“It’s been brilliant for opening my mind again and my heart to a new dimension.”

She added audiences should expect plenty of “groove and funk”.

RSC production of Antony and Cleopatra
Antony and Cleopatra is currently in previews

She said she has “no idea” what she will do next, but insisted there will be another album.

“It’s now time for a new season for me, as an independent artist, which is really more true to who I am and what I do.

“Let what I do be in better hands,” she declared. “Let me better understood and taken care of.”
