Sulley Muntari has said he would be the “No.1” supporter of any organized player boycott in protest against what he believes are increasing incidents of racism in the sport.

Last week the Ghana midfielder, who plays for top-flight Italian team Pescara, said he was “treated like a criminal” after receiving a one-match ban, which was later rescinded, for objecting to being racially abused during a Serie A game.

On April 30, the 32-year-old had left the field in protest during a match against Cagliari in Sardinia after being booked for complaining of being abused by a section of fans. If the treatment of Muntari has received worldwide attention, it seems to have had little effect on some fans who attend Serie A games.

Muntari was on the substitutes’ bench for his club’s home game against Crotone in the Stadio Adriatico Sunday and said he could hear a player being abused.

Asked how often incidents of racism happened in football, Muntari told CNN Sport: “Every game. I was sitting down [Sunday] and it was happening. There was a player playing and it was happening in the stands so how are we going to tackle this?

“This isn’t the first time it has happened. We talk about it and after maybe one week, two weeks it’s gone. Then, maybe after a month or two later, it happens somewhere and you get calls to talk about it and then it’s shut again.”

Boycott ‘credible’
The former AC Milan midfielder said he would gladly take part in a boycott, insisting he would go anywhere to bring light to the issue. Leading anti-racism campaigner Piara Power told CNN Sport that player boycotts were credible, before adding that footballers in Italy needed to be “more active.”

“In a country like Italy, where there are big name players who feel very strongly about these issues, then a boycott is one way to go,” said Power, executive director of Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE).

“In the end, it’s the way the boycott is received, the way in which the Italian FA changes the way it looks at these issues, the education of the fans. More needs to be done on all of those.

“[Boycotts] are a very good way of taking this forward. We’ve seen it in the US, don’t forget, on issues around race there. Why not in Italy?”

In overturning Muntari’s initial suspension for his two yellow cards against Cagliari, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said it had considered the “particular delicacy” of the case.

The FIGC told CNN it had no comment to make regarding Muntari’s claims that racism in football had become worse during the course of his career.

The organization that runs top-flight football in Italy — Lega Serie A — was not immediately available for comment.

Muntari not the first

Muntari is not the first footballer to suffer racist abuse in Italy’s top division.

In 2013, Muntari’s former AC Milan teammate Kevin-Prince Boateng walked off the pitch in protest during a friendly against Pro Patria.

Muntari also played in that game.

Boateng replied in support of a tweet which Muntari posted at the weekend, which read: “I am determined to fight #racism. Football should inspire respect for one race — the human race.”
There have been other racist incidents involving soccer players across Europe during 2017.

In France’s Ligue 1, some Bastia supporters directed monkey chants towards Nice striker Mario Balotelli. Bastia received a suspended one-point deduction and was forced to close part of its stadium for three games.

And in April, a Glasgow Rangers supporter appeared in court after being identified as the fan who made a monkey gesture at Celtic forward Scott Sinclair after the player had scored in a Scottish Premier League match between the two rivals.

The one-match ban which the Pescara midfielder Sulley Muntari received after protesting against racial abuse from Cagliari supporters has been overturned by the Italian football federation (FIGC).

Muntari complained to the referee, Daniele Minelli, about racial abuse during Pescara’s 1-0 defeat at Cagliari last weekend, walked off the pitch in protest after being shown a yellow card and was subsequently sent off.

Serie A’s disciplinary committee upheld the referee’s decision on Tuesday, handing the Ghanaian an automatic one-match ban. Cagliari avoided sanctions as “only 10 supporters and therefore less than 1%” of fans were directly involved, according to the committee’s report.

World footballers’ union Fifpro had called for the punishment to be rescinded while the former Tottenham striker and Kick it Out trustee Garth Crooks had called for black players in Italy to go on strike if Muntari was forced to serve the ban – with Muntari’s compatriot, Genoa’s midfielder Godfred Donsah, saying on Thursday that he was prepared to do so.

Speaking to Italian television after the match, Muntari said he had been abused by a group of fans in the first half but had tried to defuse the situation by giving one of the group, a child, his shirt “to teach him you’re not supposed to do things like that”.

The former Portsmouth, Internazionale and Milan star, who played 84 games for Ghana between 2002 and 2014, said the abuse continued in the second half so he tried to speak to Minelli. “I told him he should have had the courage to stop the game” Muntari said.

“The referee’s not just there to stand on the pitch and blow his whistle. He has to manage everything. He should also listen out for that kind of thing and set an example.”

Following the Italian FA’s decision, Muntari is now available for Pescara’s home match against Crotone on Sunday.

Bologna and Ghana midfielder Godfred Donsah says he is “100%” willing to go on strike to show solidarity with Sulley Muntari.

Pescara midfielder Muntari, 32, was given a one-game ban after he protested against racist abuse he received from the crowd at Cagliari on Sunday.

The Serie A disciplinary committee said not enough fans took part in the abuse to trigger action against Cagliari.

Donsah, 20, said racism is “killing the beauty of the game”.

Former Ghana international Muntari was booked for dissent after asking the referee to stop Sunday’s match in the wake of the abuse.

He then walked off the pitch in protest – for which officials confirmed he received a second yellow card.

Donsah, who played for Cagliari for two seasons, told BBC World Service Sport Muntari did the “right thing” by walking off and said he will wear an anti-racism message under his shirt.

“I think the authorities need to lift the ban on Sulley Muntari in order to boost the fight against racism in football,” he added.

Garth Crooks, the ex-Tottenham striker and independent trustee of anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out, has called on players in the Italian league to strike this weekend unless Muntari’s one-match suspension is withdrawn.

“I would do that 100% because racism is something that is killing the game,” added Donsah.

“Some players cutting off from some matches in order to highlight the racial abuse that is going on in football is a great move.”

Former President John Dramani Mahama has backed Sulley Muntari’s walk-off after he was racially abused by fans during Pescara’s Serie A match with Cagliari on Sunday.

Mr. Mahama in a tweet said he stood with Muntari.

The Ghanaian left Pescara with 10 men and revealed he was abused by a child who was sitting with his parents.

He took his complaints to referee, Daniele Minelli, who initially ignored him before booking him for dissent in the 89th minute.

This prompted the former Portsmouth and Sunderland player to leave the pitch in protest.

He angrily confronted Cagliari fans, shouting: “This is my colour.”

His actions have been lauded and defended with the head of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, notably backing his protest.

Italian football’s issues with racist abuse have been well documented and Muntari, then at AC Milan, had a first-hand view when fellow Ghanaian, Kevin-Prince Boateng’s walked off the pitch because of racist chanting during a friendly with lower league side, Pro Patria in January 2013.

Muntari has since been suspended by the Serie A’s Disciplinary Commission for walking off, whilst Cagliari avoided any punishment for the racist chants.

Officials at the ground wrote in their report that the racist chants were coming from only around 10 people, thus less than one per cent of the circa 2,000 in the stadium.

They also noted it was only audible because the rest of the supporters were staging a ‘silent protest’ and therefore the decision was made not to penalise Cagliari with a warning or a fine.

The Ghanaian midfielder was subjected to racist abuse from the stands, but when he complained to the referee he was shown a yellow card.

That prompted the former Milan player to walk off the pitch, and he has received backing from the UN High Commissioner for Human rights.

“In my missions in different parts of the world, I see human rights defenders as a source of inspiration for all of us here,” Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein said in a speech.

“With that in mind, I want to highlight the case of Sulley Muntari of Pescara, who left the pitch in protest when the referee booked him for complaining about being the victim of racist insults.”

“More has to be done when there are cases of racism on national and international pitches.”

Pescara’s Sulley Muntari walked off the pitch in protest when a referee booked him after he claimed he was being racially abused during a league match.

The 32-year-old former Ghana midfielder asked Daniele Minelli to stop Sunday’s Serie A game at Cagliari.

But he was instead booked for dissent in the 89th minute, prompting the former Portsmouth and Sunderland player to leave the pitch in protest.

He angrily confronted Cagliari fans, shouting: “This is my colour.”

Pescara boss Zdenek Zeman, whose side lost 1-0, said: “He asked the referee to intervene, but he [said he had] neither heard nor seen anything.

“Muntari was right, but he shouldn’t have left the pitch. It’s not up to us to dole out justice. We can talk a lot about it but then it must be left with the powers that be.

“Today this has happened when Muntari has already played in Italy for many years. We hope that mentalities will change.”

Muntari was at AC Milan when then team-mate Kevin-Prince Boateng walked off the pitch because of racist chanting during a friendly with lower-league side Pro Patria in January 2013.

It prompted a wave of support on social media. Fifa, football’s world governing body, applauded Boateng’s principles, but said it did not condone his decision to walk off.

Pescara are bottom of Serie A and have been relegated to Italy’s second tier.
