Luke Shaw looks set to leave Manchester United in the summer after more criticism from manager Jose Mourinho.

The left-back was substituted at half-time during Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup quarter-final victory against Brighton.

Mourinho said he had taken him off because Shaw, along with fellow full-back Antonio Valencia, had failed to follow his tactical instructions.

The 22-year-old, who is under contract until June 2019, is understood to have been upset by Mourinho’s comments.

Those close to the England defender have been left furious at the public nature of Mourinho’s criticism.

Mourinho said on Saturday that he chose to substitute Shaw rather than Valencia because “at least Antonio defensively was capable of good positioning”.

“Luke, in the first half, every time they came in his corridor, the cross came in and a dangerous situation was coming,” the Portuguese said.

“I was not happy with his performance.”

Mourinho has criticised Shaw repeatedly in the past, and publicly questioned the defender’s approach to training and his commitment to the club last April.

Shaw joined United from Southampton for £27m in 2014 but was out of the game for almost a year after breaking his leg 15 months later.

United have triggered the option of an additional year on his contract but it is accepted that unless Mourinho markedly changes his view of Shaw, it is likely the full-back will be sold.

He has made 15 appearances for United this season, and has seven England caps.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he should win an award for his behaviour on the touchline.

The Portuguese coach has been sent to the stands on several occasions during his managerial career following clashes with fourth officials.

However, Mourinho says he has changed his ways and feels he is now one of the Premier League’s best behaved managers.

“I’m fully committed to win the award this season of the best-behaved manager on the touchline,” Mourinho said.

“I’m serious – I prepare myself, I’m really happy. I’m not free of losing my temper, my control, in one match. I’m not perfect.

“There are so many awards – performance of the week, manager of the month and this and that – they should give one to the guy that behaves best on the touchline and it should be the fourth official to vote. I’m pretty sure that I would win.”

Mourinho has been sent to the stands once this season – during the 1-0 win at Southampton on 23 September. The United boss had encroached on to the pitch in the final few seconds of the game as he tried to get his players back into position.

He added: “I didn’t create one problem to one fourth official on a touchline, apart from my red card at Southampton when I put a foot on the pitch.

“I’m not going from the Bad One to the Perfect One, no way, but I try, I make an effort and I’m happy with the way things are going.”

Manchester United, who are second in the Premier League, play Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday (kick-off 14:15 GMT).

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says the club will “create conditions” to help Zlatan Ibrahimovic leave if he wants.

It has been reported that the 36-year-old former Sweden striker is close to completing a move to MLS side LA Galaxy.

“If it’s true and he wants a future at another club we are here to help,” said Mourinho.

“But Zlatan told me he wants to recover and feel ready to help the team.”

Ibrahimovic, who re-signed for United on a one-year deal in August, returned to action in November after recovering from a serious knee injury.

But he has made only six appearances since, and has not played since the 2-2 Premier League draw against Burnley on 26 December.

Mourinho said: “He’s working hard to be fit. I wouldn’t say he’s injured.

“He is in a moment of trying to feel really ready for demands of Premier League football.”

An LA Galaxy source told the BBC that reports linking the club to the veteran forward were “rumours at present”.

Ibrahimovic initially joined United on a free transfer in July 2016 but was released the following summer after his season was ended prematurely by a knee injury.

Meanwhile, Mourinho described midfielder Marouane Fellaini as “a very important player for me” amid reports linking him with Stoke and Turkish club Galatasaray.

The 30-year-old Belgium international, whose contract expires this summer, rejected a new deal from United in September.

Mourinho said: “There is a desire to stay together. It is my desire, it is the board’s desire, it is his desire.

“Are we going to agree? I don’t know.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho admits striker Romelu Lukaku is “tired” but says he cannot afford to rest him.

The 24-year-old has played every minute of his club’s Premier League campaign so far because of the injury problems of fellow striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Lukaku started the season with 11 goals in 10 games, but has only scored four times in his last 19 outings.

“The boy is tired. He is physically a monster but not a machine and he is feeling it,” Mourinho said.

“The guy is fantastic for me. But no, I cannot rest him.”

Lukaku has been involved in errors in his own penalty area in recent weeks that have led to goals for Manchester City and Burnley.

But the United manager refused to criticise the Belgian, suggesting the mistakes may be down to fatigue.

“Is that a consequence of a player that really needs a little rest, or is it just a consequence of the moment?” he asked.

“The other day, I said [he had played] 19 matches in the Premier League; now I say 20 matches in the Premier League, 90 minutes.

“I think for a striker, any player, that’s absolutely incredible. But if you are a central defender, a holding midfield player, where you can control your energy, positional play, you can resist, survive.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says the £300m he has spent on his squad so far is “not enough” after their 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday.

Jesse Lingard scored an injury-time equaliser and the draw leaves United 12 points behind leaders Manchester City.

“We are in the second year of trying to rebuild a football team that you know is not one of the best teams in the world,” said the Portuguese.

“Manchester City buy full-backs for the price of strikers,” he added.

Mourinho was appointed United boss in May 2016 and broke the world record last summer to sign £89m midfielder Paul Pogba, plus £30m defender Eric Bailly and midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan for £26.3m.

This year’s big deal was £75m striker Romelu Lukaku, as well as £31m defender Victor Lindelof and £40m for midfielder Nemanja Matic.

“[Spending £300m] is not enough. The price for the big clubs is different than for the other clubs. The big historical clubs are normally punished in the market because of that history,” he said.

“The boys are doing what they can and they are doing fine.”

Mourinho was asked if eight points from the past five games was good enough for a club like United.

He responded: “When you tell a club like Man Utd, do you think Milan is not as big as us? You think Real Madrid are not as big as we are?

“I know what a big club is. One thing is a big club and another thing is a big football team. They are two different things.

“When you speak about responsibilities to win the Premier League, Tottenham doesn’t have that responsibility because they are not a club with the same history as us.

“Arsenal don’t have the responsibility to win it. Chelsea don’t have the responsibility to win it. When you speak about big football clubs, you are speaking about the history of the club.”

Richmond Boakye Yiadom’s future has been thrown into doubt as the agent of Black Stars forward, confirmed that the player will leave Serbian side Red Star Belgrade for main stream Europe by the end of next summer’s transfer window.

The former Juventus striker has been in prolific form for the Serbian outfit and already has 35 goals in 44 appearances this calendar year which has seen him attract a lot of interest from Europe’s big clubs including English giants Chelsea.

The 24-year old forward has been in Belgrade for less than a year, joining from Italian Serie B side Latina in January 2017.

In an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, Oliver Arthur disclosed that his client will be playing in mainstream Europe at the beginning of next season.

“Richmond will move to mainstream Europe very soon. It can even be this January but definitely by June, he will make the move,” he said.

A move away from Red Star will be his ninth since moving to Europe in 2008.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says the Anfield club would not be allowed to play like Manchester United after their goalless draw at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool dominated for long spells but could not break United down, and Klopp said: “I’m sure if we played like this, you could not do this at Liverpool. Obviously for United it is OK.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho said he lacked attacking options.

“I needed my bench, and I didn’t have a bench,” said the Portuguese.

Liverpool managed a first clean sheet in eight games yet were left frustrated by United at Anfield for the second successive season.

They peppered United, who had 38% possession, with 20 shots but have won just once in eight matches in all competitions and have drawn the last three.

Klopp said his side was unlucky not to beat their fierce rivals in what was another much hyped but low-key game between two of the most successful clubs in English football.

“It’s quite difficult when a top-class team like United has that defensive approach,” said the German.

“I think United came here for the point and they got it. We wanted three points and didn’t get it.

“We were dominant, it is a home game for us so we should be dominant. I am okay with the performance – it is not my job to judge the United performance.

“For me today, one team who can become champion this year was in our stadium and is not a world apart from us.

“It’s not that we are playing different planets and they are really good and we do not find the entrance to the stadium.”

‘Game of Chess’

Mourinho described the second half as a game of chess, adding: “But my opponent didn’t open the door for me to win the game.”

The United boss, who did not start Marcus Rashford as a result of a knock, defended his team’s tactics and said United came to win the match.

“I was waiting for Jurgen to change, I was waiting for him to go more attacking but he kept the three strong midfielders all the time where he was having control because I only had Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.

“When I brought on Jesse Lingard and Rashford I was waiting for him to bring on Daniel Sturridge or Dominic Solanke.

“But he decided to change player by player and kept the strong midfield.

“That midfield today was stronger than my midfielder.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has ruled out signing Cristiano Ronaldo back from Real Madrid.

BBC Sport reported in June that Ronaldo was left upset after being accused of tax fraud and wants to leave Spain.

A move back to United, whom he left for a then world record £80m in 2009, has been mentioned as a possibility.

However, when asked about the likelihood of the move, Mourinho said it cannot happen due to the “economic difficulty” of doing the deal.

Mourinho was asked about signing Portugal captain Ronaldo after his side had beaten LA Galaxy 5-2 in the first match of their pre-season tour of the United States on Sunday.

“I am not going to get my club to waste time on players who are mission impossible.

“Ronaldo is such an important player for his club. A player of great economic power. We have not been able to find any reason that could have made us think that Ronaldo could leave.”

Mourinho added that he did not believe another Real Madrid player, striker Alvaro Morata, will end up at Old Trafford either.

“It is a shame,” he said.

“He is a player who made it to the first team with me and I have a special liking for. I enjoyed watching his evolution in Juventus and Madrid.

“But we have not reached an agreement with his club and I don’t think he can end with us.”

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho blamed his side’s “sloppy” attackers after Anderlecht grabbed a late equaliser in the teams’ Europa League quarter-final first leg.

United led 1-0 in Belgium until the 86th minute, when the hosts equalised with their first effort on target.

“If I was a Manchester United defender, I would be very upset with the attacking players,” Mourinho said.

“They did the serious work. The people who had to kill the game didn’t.”

Henrikh Mkhitaryan tapped in for United in the 36th minute, but it was the only successful effort of their 16 shots at goal.

The visitors’ attack lags well behind the rest of their top-four rivals in the Premier League, having scored only 46 goals. Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have all managed more than 60.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the team’s top-scorer with 28 goals in all competitions, with Mkhitaryan and Juan Mata the only others in double figures.

“It is the same problem,” added Mourinho. “We had control, we had chances, but we do not score enough goals.

“In my poor English, I cannot find a better word than sloppy. You have to play more seriously.

“Put the performance of two or three of our attacking players together and you squeeze not much juice out of it. Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Anthony Martial – they were very similar.”

Phil, Cardiff: Last half an hour the whole United attack just walking around with no desire to break with pace and kill the game off. The fact that they seem to be happy with a 1-0 at Anderlecht says how far United have fallen. And they paid the price with poor finishing as usual this season.

Darragh, Belfast: Same old United this season we go one up and take the foot off the pedal, never look like we’re gonna blow a team away! Not great for confidence with Chelsea on Sunday.

Chris Perez: You can spend as much money on a squad as possible but without time they will play as separate pieces of the jigsaw. Jose will make United great again.
