Cristiano Ronaldo won the battle between two of Europe’s in-form strikers as Portugal defeated Mohamed Salah’s Egypt 2-1 in Zurich.

The European champions trailed until the 90th minute before Ronaldo scored twice to steal victory.

Salah opened the scoring after the interval with a sweet left-footed drive from outside the area.

But Ronaldo made it 43 goals in 40 appearances this term as Portugal laid down a marker before the World Cup.

Top goalscorers in international football
Ali Daei (Iran) – 109 goals
Ferenc Puskas (Hungary) – 84
Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 81
Kunishige Kamamoto (Japan) – 80
Godfrey Chitalu (Zambia) – 79

After a tame first half, Liverpool forward Salah backed up his impressive four-goal performance against Watford on Saturday with a smart finish to give Egypt the lead.

With the clock ticking down and with victory for Egypt in sight, Portugal’s captain equalised and then sealed the win with two powerful headers in the dying minutes.

Next up for Portugal is the Netherlands – who fell to defeat against England on Friday evening – while Egypt face Greece.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton has won the Premier League’s manager of the month award for the first time.

The 59-year-old guided the Seagulls to victories over West Ham and Swansea in February.

Brighton, who beat Arsenal on Sunday, are undefeated since 20 January and sit 10th in the table in their first season in the Premier League.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah won the player award after scoring four goals in three games.

The 25-year-old is the joint-highest scorer this season with 24 goals, level with Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Hughton took charge at Brighton in December 2014 and led them to the Premier League with a second-place finish in last season’s Championship.

He said of the award: “It’s a wonderful achievement for the club and certainly for a group of players that have improved as the season has gone on and knowing that we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

Egyptian Mohamed Salah has been voted BBC African Footballer of the Year for 2017.

Following a record number of votes, the Liverpool star won ahead of Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guinean Naby Keita, Sadio Mane of Senegal and Nigeria’s Victor Moses.

“I am very happy to win this award,” the 25-year-old told BBC Sport.

“It’s always a special feeling when you win something. I feel like I had a great year, so I’m very happy.”

Salah, the Premier League’s top scorer with 13 goals, has enjoyed a stellar year for both club and country.

In early 2017, the forward was the central figure for Egypt as they finished runners-up at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He also had a hand in all seven of the goals that took the Pharaohs to their first World Cup since 1990 – assisting two and scoring five, including the stoppage-time penalty against Congo that qualified them for Russia.

“I want to be the best Egyptian ever so I work hard,” added Salah, who is the third player from Egypt to win the award and first since 2008.

“I always follow my own way and I want everyone in Egypt to follow my way.”

Salah’s form at club level as been every bit as impressive as it has in internationals.

In Italy, he scored 15 goals and made 11 others as he helped Roma finish second in Serie A, their best league placing in seven years, prior to joining Liverpool and scoring 13 times in his first 16 league games.

“I would like to thank my Liverpool team-mates and I also had a good season with Roma so I have to thank my team-mates there and my team-mates in the national team,” said Salah.

“Since I came here, I wanted to work hard and show everyone my football. I wanted to come back to the Premier League since I left, so I am very happy.”

Salah has taken the Premier League by storm this season, in contrast to a less impressive spell in the division with Chelsea between 2014-15.

“It’s well-deserved,” said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who handed the trophy to the player at the club’s Melwood training academy.

“I am a really lucky person. I had the opportunity to work with a few outstanding players and I am happy that it is now with Mo.

“The good thing is that he is still young, there is a lot of space for improvement, a lot of potential still that we can work on, but that’s how it should be. It’s a big pleasure, to be honest, to work with him.”

By winning the BBC African Footballer of the year prize Salah adds his name to a list of legends including Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria), Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast) and Michael Essien (Ghana).

“I am very happy to be like them in winning this award,” said Salah, who follows compatriots Mohamed Barakat (2005) and Mohamed Aboutrika(2008) in receiving the trophy.

Egypt Head Coach Hector Cuper has left out Liverpool forward Mohammed Salah in his final 25-man squad to face Ghana in their final FIFA World Cup qualifier in November.

The Pharaohs who have already secured qualification to their first World Cup in 27 years will be without Salah who has been their lead marksman throughout the qualifying rounds.

The 25-year-old forward was left out of the squad to avoid fatigue according to Cuper.

The Egyptian squad, however, included premier league duo Ahmed Hegazi and Ramadan Sobhi as well as 44-year old goalkeeper and captain Essam El-Hadary.

Egypt defeated the Black Stars 2-0 in the first leg in Alexandria back in November 2016.

The Western Regional Minister, Paul Evans Aidoo has advised Ghanaians to dismiss the notion that politicians are the only corrupt people in the country.

Mr Aidoo said: “I can vouch that some of us, like all other professionals, are incorruptible and are working hard in our respective fields of endeavour.”

The Minister was speaking at the 13th Biennial Conference of the National delegates Conference of the Guild of Servants of the Sanctuary of the Anglican Church at Essipong in the Western Region.

The conference was on the theme: “The Call for Fight against Corruption in the Society; the Church’s Role.”

Mr Aidoo said bribery and corruption are gradually becoming the order of the day due to bad morals and a breakdown of societal values, adding that virtues and values that were cherished in the past are now frowned upon.

He said virtues such as hard work godliness, patriotism, obedience, among others, have now given way to a “get-rich-quick attitude”, and greed to amass wealth at all cost.

Mr Aidoo said it is regrettable that some people go to Church on Sundays but do not practice what is preached.

“Indeed, people who indulge in crime and other social vices are the same people who claim to be staunch Christians,” he said.

Right Reverend Dr Atta Boffoe, Anglican Bishop of Cape Coast, who spoke on the theme of the conference, said corruption is tantamount to exploitation, dishonesty, bribery and fraud which hinders the growth of the society.

He said Ghana ranked third in a 2013 Gallup Report on corruption involving about  129 countries.

He further revealed that Ghana scored 89 per cent against Czech Republic and Lithuania.
