Citi FM reporter, Kojo Agyeman emerged first runner-up in the 2017 edition of the Ghana Mining Industry Awards for his report on the pollution of the Birim River as a result of galamsey activities.

Kojo Agyeman’s documentary focused on the devastating effects of illegal mining on the River.

The documentary also told the story from the viewpoint of residents in Kyebi and its environs who use the water from the water body.

The Best Mining Reporter went to Edem Srem, an environmental journalist. The ceremony was organised by the Ghana Chamber of Mines.

The Mining Company of the year went to Golden Star Resources Limited which operates in Prestea and Bogoso in the Western region.

#StopGalamseyNow

Kojo Agyeman’s reports were key to Citi FM‘s anti-galamsey campaign, ‘Stop Galamsey Now’ earlier this year.

The campaign and public support eventually prompted the Minister of Lands and National Resources, John Peter Amewu to crack down on the illegal miners.

A six-month ban was imposed and was eventually extended by three more months to January 2018.
