The 35-year-old wrote: ‘Good to see daddy Jose Mourinho and the great legend Sir Bobby Charlton.’

The Ghanaian now plies his trade for Persib Bandung in Indonesia but his most successful years were spent at Stamford Bridge.

He claimed the Premier League title, FA Cup and League Cup under Mourinho’s stewardship and clearly still possesses a strong relationship with the Portuguese.

The United boss is now in pursuit of silverware at a new club and watched on as his side advanced to the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Goals from Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford helped Mourinho’s men fight back from a goal down against their Russian opposition.

Retired Black Stars midfielder Derek Boateng believes hardwork and discipline are the reasons behind Michael Essien’s long and successful career.

At his peak, Essien was considered one of the best central midfielders in the world and spent his prime years playing for Chelsea where he won the Champions League before later moving on to play with Real Madrid and AC Milan.

These days he plies his trade in the Indonesian top flight with Persib Bandung and has already found the bag of the net 5 times in 27 appearances.

Boateng does not appear surprised that at age 34 Essien is still going strong in his club career.

“This guy is so professional you have no idea.

“When we all went to Europe most of the time he declined to come home with us for holidays.

“When you called to ask his whereabouts, he would answer that he was home watching Formula One.

“The guy was so determined and he was the only one during our U-17 days that kept his position right from the friendly through to the tournament,” he revealed.

The 20 finalists of this year’s Citi FM Write-Away Contest are sitting on tenterhooks as the grand finale to announce the winner of the GHC 5,000 prize money gets underway at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel.

The Write-Away Contest is Ghana’s number one literary competition for amateur writers.

This year’s contestants wrote their own short stories, with their own unique characters, that ended with the idiom: ‘A bird in hand is worth two in a bush.’

IMG_4887Speaking at the event, the Acting Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Charles Aheto Tsegah said the Write Away Contest is “the best public contest that is dedicated to building the minds of children.”

Mr. Tsegah praised Citi FM for demonstrating consistency “to drive change.”

“We are not harnessing the potential of our children,” he lamented.

Educationist and Chief Examiner of the contest Hanis Hafar, speaking at the event has charged the Education Minister, through her representative at the event to “erect billboards across the country to encourage children to always read and write.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”JO1wiPDkAfBIWIJNRFCRgKbDTOO1w6I7″]Over the years, enterprising young writers have thrilled audiences with their well researched and written entries, and have been awarded accordingly.

Last year’s winner, Isabella Quaye, making a comment at the even lamented that “our biggest challenge is we do not have reading materials and if they are available, the children do not read.”

This year’s winner takes home GHC 5,000, the first runner-up  and the second runner-up will each receive GHC 3,000 and GHC 1,000 respectively. Special awards will also be given to deserving contestants.

The Write-Away Contest is sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank and Indomie Instant Noodles. The contest is supported by Finlite and the Volta River Authority (VRA) and powered by 97.3 Citi FM.
