The National Union of Metro Mass Transit workers has called off its half-day strike, which was set to take place today [Friday].

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Samuel Quaye, the Chairman of the union, said the decision was reached on Thursday, based on a consensus reached during a crunch meeting.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dkoukSrdL809Tv2zJqnOXZIfir0yshYy”]“The press conference stated that, we are going to work from today, the strike was on Wednesday and on Thursday all members of Metro Mass resumed work.”

Some commuters in Accra and other parts of the country were left stranded following the decision of the MMT workers to strike.

The workers announced the strike last Friday and demanded the dismissal of the company’s Board Chair, Osabarima Ansah Sasraku III, and Deputy Managing Director, John Awuku Dzuazah.

Even though the workers returned to work without their concerns being met, Mr. Quaye said the union will continue to insist on their demands.

“…From the press conference, we made it clear to the public that we had issues, part of the issues have been solved, some are still pending. We are going to make sure we monitor, we are going to make sure we stress on [issues], until all our grievances have been heard. But for now, all workers have been asked to go back to work”.

Accusations against Board Chair

The MMT drivers had accused the company’s Board Chair and Deputy Managing Director of involvement in the disappearance of 12 of the company’s buses, and insisted that their continuous stay in office may lead to the demise of the company.

The drivers also complained that the management of the company was insensitive to their working conditions.

At the time of the Board’s inauguration in June 2017, the  Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, charged the board members to refrain from interfering with the day-to-day running of the company, but rather channel their energies in finding practical ways of ensuring an efficient transport service.

Some aggrieved members of the New Patriotic Party in the Ashanti Region earlier today stormed the premises of the Metro Mass Transit Bus terminal in the region to stop one Nicholas Oduro from holding himself as the Regional Depot Manager.

According to them, Mr Oduro cannot claim to be the head when a Daniel Agyenim Boateng, the Deputy Regional Organizer of the party has already been appointed as the Manager.

[contextly_sidebar id=”YsCab4xLUZp05yDRp8kwQ74on6ekcOwt”]The youth, who vowed to ensure that Mr Oduro does not occupy any office at the premises of the company claimed a leading member of the NPP, Mr Amoako Tuffour was behind the “illegal” appointment of Nicholas Oduro.

About 20 police officers were deployed to ensure calm and avert any disturbances.

According to the Suame Divisional Police Commander, DSP D. O. Lomotey, the police will ensure maximum security to ensure calm.

Kingsley Addo, the Chairperson of the Ashanti Regional NPP Organizers Association told Citi News that the association did not endorse the unilateral decision by Dr. Tuffuor.

“We the organizers in the Ashanti Region, we do not support any decision by Dr. Amoako Tuffuor so we appeal to Nana Akufo-Addo to help us keep Daniel for us as a Depot Manager. Daniel has been a hard-working organizer. He has done a marvelous job for us and that is why were are supporting him. What Dr. Amoako Tuffuor is rather doing is illegal. One position cannot go to two people,” he said.

He further threatened that the association will do whatever it takes to ensure that Daniel Agyenim Boateng retains the position.

“Daniel had the appointment first, so we don’t know what has changed now.”

The father of Lawrence Asiamah Hanson a.k.a Bulldog says his son is innocent of the crime he is suspected to have committed.

Mr. Jacob Hanson told Citi News, his son, who is currently in the custody of the Criminal and Investigative Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, is being unlawfully held by the Police.

The Police Homicide Unit of the CID on Thursday arrested Bulldog who manages dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale, as the prime suspect in investigations of the murder of Fennec Okyere, who managed Hiplife artiste, Kwaw Kesse.

According to the Police, Bulldog allegedly sent threatening text messages to the deceased and also publicly threatened him on live radio, hence; his arrest.

A private legal practitioner, Kwame Akuffo, in an earlier interview with Citi News however mentioned that, the basis on which the Police arrested Bulldog is untenable adding that, it is wrong for the Police to tag him as a suspect.

Speaking to Citi News, a devastated Jacob Hanson agreed with lawyer Akuffo’s stance on the matter.

He said: “You are accusing an innocent young man without even having heard from him. They [Police] only invited him over to the place and they were chatting with him. They held him, they wasted his time till evening then they said they have arrested him. That is not justice!”

Mr. Hanson added that he has every right to suspect there is a “sinister something behind it because he left home to work and left his four-year-old daughter and one-year-old son with a wife that he was going to work…what is the motive for the action they are accusing him of? What will be his motive?”

In March, 2014, some unknown assailants stabbed Fennec to death in his private off the Spintex Road, Accra.

The Police subsequently offered a cash reward of GHC 20,000 to any person or persons who will volunteer credible information leading to the arrest of suspects involved in the murder of Fennec Okyere.
