The well-documented struggles of the first year Senior High School students at the La Presby Senior High School may be lessened after the CEO of McDan Shipping, Daniel Makorley, pledged to donate furniture to first-year classrooms that have students sitting on cement blocks and wooden planks.

Citi News’ serialized reports on the school’s troubling infrastructure deficit, caught the attention of the CEO, who also said furniture would also be provided for the teachers.

Mr. Makorley said this gesture was his own way of giving back to the society that developed him.

He was seemingly stunned by the conditions of school in Ghana’s capital city.

“It is serious. I really don’t have words to explain it. When I heard your news, it broke my heart a little. I had a lot of things to do, but had to cancel to be here this morning [Tuesday] to assess the situation,” he told Citi News.

“I didn’t know the extent of the problem, but from what I am seeing right now, it is serious. It’s the middle of the city and kids are sitting on blocks learning. Some are virtually standing, and you can also see that the classrooms are over crowded.”

He said he was going to contract a furniture shop to start producing tables and chairs for them immediately.

“This is what I can also do to help my community. I can’t do much,” Mr. Makorley said, adding that it was about time the private sector stepped in to aid some of the schools in need “and pay back to the society.”

“It’s heartbreaking that we will see kids like this in the middle of the city. This is not a village. Its right in the middle of the city and they are sitting on blocks learning.”

Despite the promise of furniture, the students still have to contend with studies in uncompleted buildings and some classrooms even lack marker boards.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta has rejected claims he breached due process by approving a loan facility from Agricultural Development Bank to McDan Shipping Company Limited.

He argues that the bank’s credit committee was responsible for  the ultimate approval or otherwise.

[contextly_sidebar id=”P4atpPUu9k8auD27M3KE2EgZlx21zjP1″]The Minority has accused Ken Ofori Atta for flouting public procurement rules by approving the GHc 10,459,500 loan for the company to undertake a government contract.

But speaking to journalists, the Finance Minister denied breaking the law.

“That will be the purview of the credit committee of the bank…with banking transaction, the credit committee goes through and then makes their recommendation. I would imagine that on my part it was the right thing,” he explained.

According to the Minority, the failings stem from the failure of the President to constitute the requisite governing boards, including that of adb, to oversee such transactions.

Addressing the press in Accra on Tuesday, the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, appealed to the media “to probe further whether this contract was awarded through an open competitive tender process to guarantee and ensure value for money.”

He also accused Mr. Ofori-Atta of reducing “the mandate and role of the Ministry of Finance to some credit disbursement entity in order that they can reward the political cronies.”

“The minister usurped the authority and functions of the Bank and its Board of Directors, which has curiously not been constituted so we are concerned. So where are the Board of Drectors of the major financial institutions of our country?” Mr. Iddrisu queried.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority in Parliament, has accused the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, of contravening best practice by approving a credit facility of GHc10,459,500 from the Agricultural Development Bank (adb).

The credit facility in question was granted to the McDan Shipping Company.

Mr. Idrissu, during the press conference, made reference to a letter that indicated that a credit facility of GHc10,459,500 was earmarked for McDan on the authority of the Finance Ministry.

“This is to enable the company [McDan] to undertake its business operations, and in particular, to execute a supply contract awarded by the Ghana Cocoa Board,” the stated.

No due diligence

The Minority Leader reminded that best corporate governance practices require that the Board of Directors approve financial transactions of the bank and not the Finance Minister

“The minister usurped the authority and functions of the Bank and its Board of Directors, which has curiously not been constituted so we are concerned. So where are the board of directors of the major financial institutions of our country?”

Per the Minority’s assessment, Mr. Iddrissu added that “it was clear that no due diligence was conducted by even the management of the bank before the minister’s approval.”

Kwabena Oduro, a 32-year-old self-employed caterer has been slapped with   a 10-year jail-term for imposing as a police officer, and defrauding four people of various sums of money under the pretext of recruiting them into the National Police Training School.

He pleaded guilty and was jailed 10 years; in addition the court asked him to pay GHC 8,785 as compensation to the complainants.

The facts of the case as presented by chief inspector John Amponsah  at the Nsuta circuit court presided over by Mr David  P.W.Amedior were that, in 2013, the accused person posing as a Police C.I.D personnel posted from Accra to Kumasi Police Training School at Patase, defrauded Apeadu Benjamin Freduah of GHC 1,135, Kwabena  Kyere, GHC 800,Theresa Mensah, GHC 6,250 and Rose Owusu, GHC 600 at different dates and different places.

The prosecution said, after collecting the monies, the accused person vanished and all efforts by the complainants to get in touch with him failed as he kept on changing his mobile numbers,  or busied himself  having meetings with the Inspector-General of Police.

The accused person continued to play tricks on his victims until May 6 this year when one of the complainants spotted him at Kofi’s in the Mampong Municipality and reported the case to the police.

The police arrested him and upon a search on him, retrieved a police C.I.D. identity card bearing the name of one Nana Frimpong and various passport pictures.

The prosecution said after investigations, the accused person was charged with the offence.
