The pathologist carrying out tests on the body of Major Maxwell Mahamahas blamed the police for the delay in issuing a report on the autopsy of the late military officer.

According to Dr. Adusei, he has been unable to finish his work because the police are not cooperating with him.

[contextly_sidebar id=”S7tND8DlvaAfLCUl17VoyfWFc0vcSfH8″]Dr. Adusei told the court today [Thursday], that since the body of the late military man was presented to him, his request of having the essential key police investigators in the case make themselves available for the pathology process to begin have not been met.

He further told the court that parts of the body of the deceased could not be traced.

His testimony follows a court order directing him to appear before it, to answer questions on why the pathology report is not ready as stated by the police.

The prosecutor, DSP George Amega, during the last hearing of the case, informed the judge that they have been chasing the report from the medical officer since investigations began without any success.

Major Mahama, an officer of the 5th Infantry Battalion, was said to have been on his daily jogging route on May 29, 2017, some residents of the town attacked and lynched on suspicion of being an armed robber.

Over 50 suspects, some of whom had fled the town to other regions in the country, were later arrested in connection with the killing.

Twenty-five persons are currently facing prosecution for their role in the suspected murder of Major Adam Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi. The suspects have been charged with murder.

The magistrate, Ebenezer Kwaku Ansah, adjourned the case to the 23rd of November 2017, where the report is expected to be presented following assurances from the pathologist and the police.

The late army officer was laid to rest on June 9, 2017, with full State and army honors.

Violence is a confession of failure; the confession is finally expressed physically. Thought is said to be the mother of deeds and if violence finds physical expression, then the origin of violence can be found in the understanding of society.

It is said that, power is like a sweet intoxicating wine, the more you drink, the more you want. An eminent Ghanaian re-echoed same: it is better to be a messenger in a ruling government than to be general secretary of a political party in opposition. So when an open rebellion expressed in a courtroom is supported by the structures of a ruling Party, we ought not to expect a violation of their ‘protected right’ as suggested Party members?

These references hint at people’s mindset of governance, politics become an instrument of self-interest instead of the means to solve the problems of society. The irony in this mindset is obvious; it belies the truth and the dynamics of social laws of development. We make ignoble statements possible to fulfill during election campaign. We choose to tell people what they want to hear but not what we ought to tell them. Power is held out of being capable of delivering everything which people ask. Flowing from this, any problem people encounter is deemed to be weakness of people who have deliberately created misery, but no weakness on the part of leadership and societal structures.

Societal development is a continuum of actions and inactions, failures and successes, positives and negatives, throwing up new challenges as problems are solved and new ones emerges. There will always be problems for each generation to solve. Society can only be better understood this way.

The economic problem in this generation is eminent. In particular, we have scores of young men and women who are frustrated and cannot provide their ends meet from society and because of that they display their aggressions on their people. Some become criminals because of dictums of the society. And some by acts of decadence resolve to the martyrdom of people to secure their livelihood.

“All these are traceable to violence entailed in not organizing society in such a way to support their well-being. Unfortunately, lack of understanding of the victims does not permit to trace it to the structure. The young men and women are victims of violence but not violent. The violent is attached to the system.”
On each Independence Day we stereotypically light the “Perpetual Flame”. We often tell the youth that they are the future leaders. Now, this stereotype has misinformed and misled the youth: re-echoing in some of our minds sense entitlement without sense of effort. The contradictory clause, lighting the perpetual flame, conceals the possible application of the need for today tomorrow. We should be told that leadership emerges out of hard work for society. It is a not sweet intoxicating wine, neither is it a rich messenger in a ruling party.

Today, due to galamsey, our rivers are turning into gold, our forests are turning into gold, our waters are turning into gold, our plantains are turning into gold, but our bodies do not have the mechanisms to digest gold. Again, this can be attributed to the dearth of societal understanding.

Perhaps what moral right do the people of Diaso have to brutally take the life of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama? Was he a criminal? Or the mob was the criminal? Indeed, there was a complete violation of social law and there is no moral justification in this dastard situation. But how well do the laws of our society support morality?

When a group of thugs perceived as vigilante group, after being brought before the court of law for an attack at a Regional Coordinating Council resorted to further rampage in a court room to free their 13 colleagues on trial which is an affront on the court and on the judge, they were later on fine for relieve by the court, citing no evidence for prosecution. In this case, there is a perpetuation of violence in our society under a law which does not support morality.

In all, the law and society are the criminals. A law which does not relate to society is no law, and as such a violation of law. For this reason, a law must protect the values of society, defined by the rule of law.

The Chief of Army Staff, Major General William Azu Ayamdo, has said the military will not retaliate or carry out brutality on residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region after some community folks lynched and burnt a military officer.

According to him, the Army will collaborate with the Police and other security agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter, and bring the culprits to book in accordance with law.

The deceased, Captain Maxwell Mahama is said to have been on his daily jogging routine on Monday when some angry youth of the town attacked him, allegedly on suspicion of being an armed robber.

[contextly_sidebar id=”xnOclMY7hZnEvdKWrzAvqmOyCOFY5XP2″]Major Azu Ayamdo made the statement when he visited Denkyira-Obuasi with some top military officers to help in investigating the gruesome crime.

“I’ve lost one of my fine officers who was detailed to come here on official duty protecting lives and properties only to be lynched by the same community he is supposed to be protecting. So I’m very sad that this should happen to an officer of the Ghana Army and the Ghana Armed Forces at large,” he said.

He told journalists that “the community where the incident happened has completely been vacated, except the few who were arrested.”

Major Azu Ayamdo said a few of those arrested have been identified as being directly involved in the dastardly act. He urged the police to work speedily on prosecuting the suspects.

“Out of those we have been able to identify, two or three who may have been directly involved in the incident, we have handed them over to the police. My hope is that the police will work on this one very speedily so that we can get to the bottom of this matter.”

“A lot of people have the thought that we are coming to do some reprisal attacks…. We are not going to carry out reprisal attacks. People should feel free to go about their normal duties if they are not involved in any of these acts. But once we require getting to the bottom of this, we require them to give us information that will lead to the quick resolution of the matter. They should be rest assured that we are not going to carry out reprisal attack,” he added.

The Ghana Armed Forces is urging its troops to remain calm following the gruesome murder of an officer in the Central Region.

It said it was working to bring justice to the deceased and those affected by his murder.

[contextly_sidebar id=”lBIiq2Tq6ZuQFYOtkw3nh6CiiIyD4Vas”]Captain Maxwell Mahama of the 5th Infantry Battalion was lynched and burnt by some angry residents at Diaso, the capital of the Upper West Denkyira District on Monday.

The Armed Forces in a statement signed by the Director of Public Relations, Colonel Aggrey-Quarshie, said it has commenced investigations into the murder.

The statement also said a fact-finding team led by the Chief of Army Staff is proceeding to the area to gather more information about the development.

“A high-powered fact-finding team led by the Chief of the Army Staff is proceeding to the scene of the incident to ascertain the facts of the case… In the meantime, our troops have been urged to remain calm whilst action is being taken to bring the perpetrators of this dastardly act to book.”

It is feared that the murder would incense other soldiers to raid the town and retaliate.

Earlier reports received by Citi News indicates that, some youth began fleeing the town last night after news of the killing went viral.

Meanwhile, Colonel Aggrey-Quarshie who said in a Citi Breakfast Show that the deceased was deployed for an anti-galamsey and anti-lumbering operation in the area, has indicated that other personnel deployed for the operation will not be withdrawn.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his regret over the death of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama who was lynched and burnt in the Central Region by some angry youth on Monday morning.

John Mahama also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased, who are heartbroken over the unfortunate development.

[contextly_sidebar id=”llVMBJAkTxILsIYKckyHdl9Rn2Df6t03″]Capt. Maxwell Mahama, an officer of the 5 Infantry Battalion, was said to have been on his daily jogging routine on Monday when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Reports say he had his gun on him while jogging, and some residents who saw him with the gun raised alarm, attracting some of the youth in the community who attacked and killed him.

Citi News gathered that some armed robbers had attacked residents the day before, and the angry youth were on the lookout for the criminals, hence they mistook Captain Maxwell Mahama, who was dressed in civilian clothes as one of the perpetrators, having spotted a gun on him.

Subsequent reports suggest that the murder was linked to the soldier’s mission in the area to fight illegal small-scale mining.

But President John Mahama in a Twitter comment commiserated with the wife and children of the deceased.

He tweeted, “My heart goes out to my brother, Capt. Chubby Adam Mahama (Rtd.) on the murder of his son, Capt. Maxwell Mahama. #RestinPeaceMaxwell.”

“And my condolences to the wife of Capt. Maxwell Mahama, his young children & to his mother on the loss of her only son. #RestinPeaceMaxwell.”

Germany publicly told the top U.S. spy official there to leave on Thursday, a rare and forceful act illustrating deep anger over revelations of American espionage that are disrupting one of Washington’s chief alliances.

The action came amid investigations into foreign spying by government workers and open questions over U.S. surveillance in Germany, a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said.

In the two cases that came to light over the past week, an employee of the Federal Intelligence Service, known as the BND, and an official at the Defense Ministry are being investigated on suspicion of passing secrets to the U.S., people briefed on the matters say.

Officials and high-ranking members of parliament on Thursday described deep frustration in the German government that the U.S., despite months of discussion over the need to patch up relations, hasn’t seriously addressed the latest allegations.

“U.S. policy has simply been to stonewall, to answer no questions, and to leave Germany alone with this problem,” said Hans-Christian Ströbele, an opposition member of the special parliamentary committee that was briefed by senior German security and government officials on Thursday. “There is substantial anger in the government.”

In one example of the frustration, a top German intelligence official told the committee that a call from Central Intelligence Agency chief John Brennan earlier this week shed little light on the current investigations, according to people present at the briefing.

The official said Mr. Brennan offered little but platitudes about the value of the trans-Atlantic alliance and expressed frustration about the bad press, according to the account, earlier reported by German magazine Der Spiegel.

In Washington, officials declined to comment about Germany’s action or the allegations of U.S. spying, while repeating that they valued their alliance with Berlin.

“Any sort of comment on any reported intelligence acts would put at risk U.S. assets, U.S. personnel and the United States national security,” White House press secretary Josh Earnest said. “We do continue to be in touch with the Germans at a variety of levels, including through law enforcement, diplomatic and even intelligence channels.”

Relations between Germany and the U.S. are now at their lowest point since the run-up to the Iraq war, when then-German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder loudly opposed military intervention. The difference this time is that Ms. Merkel has been a strong proponent of working with the U.S. on issues as diverse as the Ukraine crisis and a new trans-Atlantic free-trade agreement, despite growing anti-American attitudes at home.

The question now is how deeply the row over U.S. spying—a particularly sensitive issue in Germany because of its experience with mass surveillance under Nazi and Communist regimes—will affect other issues in which the two countries cooperate.

Ms. Merkel’s spokesman, in announcing that the representative of U.S. intelligence agencies had been instructed to leave, said the government would seek to continue working with Washington.

“It remains essential for Germany to work closely and trustingly with Western partners, especially with the U.S., for the safety of its citizens and forces abroad,” the spokesman, Steffen Seibert, said. “But trust and openness is necessary for this from both sides.”

Ms. Merkel remained under pressure to take further steps to penalize the U.S. Opposition politicians intensified calls this week that she suspend negotiations for a trans-Atlantic free-trade agreement favored by businesses in the U.S. and Europe but viewed skeptically by most Germans. Gregor Gysi, parliamentary chief of the opposition Left Party, said kicking out the U.S. official was “one obvious first consequence, but really only one” of the espionage affair.

“It’s a symbolic act, albeit a significant one, that is mainly directed at the German people,” Norbert Röttgen, a top ally of Ms. Merkel in parliament, said of telling the U.S. official to leave. “Nobody in a position of authority here wants to do any more damage.”

Despite Thursday’s events, the seriousness of the alleged spying that emerged in the last week remained unclear.

The evidence against a midlevel Defense Ministry employee whose home and office were searched on Wednesday wasn’t strong enough for him to be arrested, people briefed on the investigation said. But investigators continued to examine whether he passed along classified information to a U.S. contact, the people said.

German authorities also continued investigating a low-level BND employee who was arrested last week on suspicions of seeking to spy for the Russians and who subsequently admitted that he had been selling secret documents to the U.S. Those documents were “less delicate” than what the Defense Ministry official had access to, according to a statement issued by the conservative bloc allied with Ms. Merkel in parliament.

Despite the ongoing investigations, top German officials have expressed shock that the U.S. didn’t rein in espionage activities here after last year’s outrage over revelations of National Security Agency programs, including the monitoring of Ms. Merkel’s cellphone.

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble, one of Germany’s longest-serving and most popular politicians, said in a televised appearance Wednesday evening that the country needed U.S. intelligence help to defend itself against terror threats. But he described the alleged American attempts to spy via German government employees as “idiotic.”

“So much stupidity makes one want to cry,” Mr. Schäuble said.
