The theatre block under construction for the Kumasi Maternal and Child Health Hospital (MCHH), to raise the quality of care, is expected to be ready by the close of this month.

Dr. Kofi Buah Bosque-Hamilton, the Medical Superintendent, said the contractors had given firm assurance that the deadline would not be missed.

The block, which comes with a recovery ward was funded under the Urban Development Grant of the World Bank.

[contextly_sidebar id=”rqORDOJUeWYvUQyreA76jqAbVChJsHWD”]The Medical Superintendent made this known during a visit to the facility by the Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama.

Accompanied by the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi and some officials of her ministry, she was there to assess the progress of work on the project, awarded in March, this year.

Dr. Bosque-Hamilton said the theatre would be used for emergency and complicated cases.

The hospital, constructed in 1910, is the third oldest heath facility in the country, and the completion of project could significantly help to take some of the pressure off the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) – the nations’ second largest referral facility.

Ghana’s current maternal mortality rate is estimated at about 360 per 100, 000 live births, with almost 65 percent of the cases attributable to postpartum hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, abortion and sepsis.

Dr. Bosque-Hamilton indicated that the number of deaths could be more than halved given good medical facilities and reproductive health services.

He added that it was on the basis of this that the project must be seen as a right step and a wise decision.

Hajia Mahama underlined the determination to substantially reduce maternal and child deaths.

She made reference to the recently launched Maternal Health Survey, to gauge the level of maternal mortality and what had been causing these deaths.

The survey, she noted, had been planned within the scope of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) acceleration framework.

The Minister who was on a two-day visit had earlier inspected the Sofo-Line lorry terminal, Asawase and Old Tafo markets and the Kejetia/Central Market Redevelopment Project.

First Lady Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has cut the sod for the construction of a new GHC 10 million Maternity Unit for the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), following fund-raising events recently held in Accra and Kumasi to provide the funds to kick-start the project.

The unit, which is planned to be completed in four month’s time, is part of efforts to address the problem of inadequate maternity-related facilities at KATH, currently resulting in avoidable suffering and deaths of mothers and children who visit the hospital for medical care.

At the ceremony, the First Lady expressed her gratitude to all donors for their quick response to the fundraising request that has made it possible for construction of the project to commence.

She indicated that, she was particularly happy because she “ feels confident that when completed, the project will save many lives.”

She noted that the provision of quality healthcare should always be prioritized because “a country’s best resource is its human resource, and health is by far one of the most important investments we can make in them.”

According to her, regardless of recent achievements in healthcare, “a lot more needs to be done to achieve the goals and indicators as espoused in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.”

Present at the ceremony was the Second Lady Hajia Samira Bawumia, the Regional Minister Simon Osei Mensah, Deputy Minister of Health and the Mayor of Kumasi  Hon. Osei Assibey.

The Upper East Region has made remarkable improvement in the implementation of the Mother-Baby Friendly Health Facility Initiative (MBFHFI) in the Upper East, according to UNICEF’s programme coordinator  Dr. Priscilla Wobil.

The Mother-Baby Friendly Health Facility Initiative (MBHFI) is the ninth of 14 strategies being implemented by the Ghana Health Service under its National Newborn strategy and action plan, with support from UNICEF through the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

The project, which aims at ending all preventable maternal and newborn deaths towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030,  was piloted in four selected districts of the region namely Bolgatanga municipal, Bawku municipal, Bongo and Kassena-Nankana West districts.

According to Dr Priscilla Wobil, the program has brought significant improvement in the quality of health care and rendered mothers and their babies with a reduction in stillbirths and neonatal mortality.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, at the first quarter review meeting held in Bolgatanga, Dr.Wobil  attributed the commitment of health personnel and their leaders at the districts and regional for the success chalked.

“From October to December, they [health personnel] worked on improving counseling, to ensure that every mother who comes to the facility to deliver will be counseled on breast feeding,  family planning, new born and maternal danger signs so that if there is any problem, they can come to the facility immediately for redress”.

She impressed on health personnel in the region to work hard at ensuring the region attains the objectives of the programme.

The National Director of family health department of the Ghana health service, Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye said even though Ghana received an award as the best maternal mortality improved country in Africa, there was the need to still improve the quality of health care at facilities.

He added that, the establishment of nutrition clinics, increase in data collection and distribution of iron foliage to menstruating women (aged 10 to 19) were among others strategies of addressing maternal and neonatal dangers.
