Some Members of Parliament have expressed anger over recent publications attributed to former Attorney General, Martin Amidu who alleges massive corruption in the 5th and 6th parliaments of the fourth republic.

The legislators said steps must be taken to clear the name of the House which they say has been tainted by Mr. Amidu’s claims.

Martin Amidu in his recent statement, alleged that some ministerial appointees paid bribes to Members of Parliament to approve of their nomination at vetting in 2011.

“…the response I received when I reported the two occasions of extortion to the then President was to be consoled by the fact that Parliament had made attempts to extort money from him when he nominated persons for appointment; he added that two of my colleagues even paid to be approved for their ministerial positions. I was shocked because such extortions never took place in the First and Second Parliaments that ended on 7th January 2001 when I was Deputy Attorney General,” Amidu said in the statement.

The Member of Parliament for Mpohor constituency in the Western Region, Alex Kofi Agyekum, who raised the issue on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, said he is determined together with other MPs to pursue the matter to defend the name of the parliament.

He said the Martin Amidu must be made to present evidence of his claims against parliament.

“If for some reason you have any evidence that there is a canker that has eaten into the fabric of parliament to the extent that you have been bold enough to say bribery and corruption has been institutionalized, then it is a serious thing.”

Mr. Alex Agyekum said he was hopeful the leadership of the house will take the matter into serious consideration and take the necessary action.

‘Parliament goes on break’

Meanwhile, the sitting of parliament has been adjourned till the 24th of January, to allow for the constitution of various standing and select committees of the house.
