Sergio Aguero has reiterated his desire to return to Independiente when his contract at Manchester City expires.

The 29-year-old joined City in 2011, signing from La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

During his six years in Manchester, Aguero has been prolific and has become a legendary figure.

He has just over two years left on his contract at the Etihad and says he wants to head back to his first club when his time is up in Manchester.

Speaking to Fox Sports Argentina, he said: “I always said that I would like to return to Independiente when my contract ends with City, which is in 2020. I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on finishing the season well and reaching the World Cup.”

Aguero is currently on international duty with Argentina as they prepare to play Spain at Atletico’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium on Tuesday

Manchester City will face Liverpool in an all-Premier League Champions League quarter-final.

Runaway leaders City suffered their only defeat in the league this season at Liverpool on 14 January, while Pep Guardiola’s side beat the Reds 5-0 at Etihad Stadium last September.

The first leg will take place at Anfield on 3-4 April, with the return the following week on 10-11 April.

Holders Real Madrid will face Italian champions Juventus.

That is a repeat of the 2017 final which Real won 4-1 in Cardiff.

La Liga leaders Barcelona, who are looking to win the Champions League for the first time since 2015, face Roma, while Sevilla, who beat Manchester United 2-1 on aggregate in the previous round, take on five-time European champions Bayern Munich.

Clash of the Premier League free-scorers

The tie between Liverpool and Manchester City will be the first meeting between Premier league sides in the Champions League quarter-finals since 2010-11 when Chelsea faced Manchester United.

On that occasion, United advanced 3-1 on aggregate on their way to the final which they lost 3-1 to Barcelona at Wembley.

Friday’s draw means one Premier League club is guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.

City are 21 points clear of fourth-placed Liverpool in the table.

They are the top two scorers in the Premier League, with City finding the net 85 times in 30 games. Liverpool have scored 68 goals from the same number of matches.

Champions League quarter-final draw

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been charged by the Football Association for “wearing a political message, specifically a yellow ribbon”.

He breached the FA’s kit and advertising regulations, the governing body said.

Guardiola said in November he wears the ribbon to support imprisoned politicians in his native Catalonia.

The ex-Barcelona and Spain midfielder has until 18:00 GMT on Monday, 5 March to respond to the charge.

The FA had spoken to Guardiola about the issue in mid-December and two formal warnings have been given which were ignored.

The charge was then triggered when he again wore it pitchside – he is free to wear it elsewhere – during City’s shock FA Cup loss against Wigan on Monday.

Two key members of the Catalan independence movement were held without bail after an independence vote in October, which the Madrid government deemed illegal.

Guardiola had said in November: “If one day in prison was already too much, look how many days they’ve been there now.

“Like everybody knows, hopefully sooner or later I can stop wearing it.

“All the politicians that are in prison, I hope they can leave and go back home soon with their families and continue living the lives they deserve.”

Manchester United beat Huddersfield to narrow the gap on rivals Manchester City to 13 points after the Premier League leaders were held to a draw by Burnley.

Romelu Lukaku put the hosts in front before Alexis Sanchez scored his first goal for the Red Devils, converting the rebound after his initial penalty was saved, and the visitors fell into the drop zone with a fourth straight defeat.

Earlier, Johann Berg Gudmundsson scored a late equaliser for Burnley as City failed to win for just the fourth time this season.

Danilo scored a superb, curling opener for Pep Guardiola’s side but the visitors failed to take their chances, with Raheem Sterling missing an open goal inside the six-yard box.

In the late match at the Emirates Stadium, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a debut goal and Aaron Ramsey netted his first hat-trick to give Arsenal a thrilling 5-1 victory over Everton.

Fellow January signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan also picked up a hat-trick of assists.

At the other end of the table, Southampton moved out of the relegation zone after holding on to beat bottom side West Brom 3-2 at The Hawthorns.

Ahmed Hegazi put the hosts ahead, only for Saints to score twice in three minutes before the break through Mario Lemina’s superb strike and Jack Stephens’ flick at the back post.

James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick made it 3-1 to the visitors and, although Salomon Rondon pulled a goal back, Alan Pardew’s side failed to level.

Swansea are just above the bottom three after a 1-1 draw with Leicester, with Federico Fernandez’s header cancelling out Jamie Vardy’s opener.

Elsewhere, Brighton moved up to 13th and level on points with opponents West Ham after a comfortable 3-1 victory. Javier Hernandez levelled after Glenn Murray’s opener but Jose Izquierdo scored a sublime second and Pascal Gross drilled in a third from 20 yards.

And Bournemouth came from a goal down to beat Stoke – Joshua King and Lys Mousset scoring for the Cherries after Xherdan Shaqiri put the visitors in front on five minutes.

In the Championship, Cardiff maintained their promotion push with a comprehensive 4-1 win at Leeds.

The Bluebirds remain fourth, two points behind Aston Villa, who secured their sixth successive win with a 3-2 victory over bottom side Burton.

Manchester City reached their first final under Pep Guardiola as the Premier League leaders beat battling Bristol City in the Carabao Cup.

Already leading 2-1 from the first leg, goals from Leroy Sane, Sergio Aguero and Kevin de Bruyne at Ashton Gate ensured Manchester City’s place at Wembley on Sunday, 25 February.

They dominated the first half and Sane deservedly put the visitors in front shortly before the break, with his deflected shot bouncing in after Bernardo Silva had dispossessed Hordur Magnusson.

Manchester City looked to have all but killed the tie early in the second half when Aguero’s strike across goal rounded off a lethal counter attack.

The Championship team produced a rousing final 20 minutes to give Guardiola’s side a brief late scare, with Marlon Pack’s smart header and Aden Flint’s stoppage-time goal threatening for a moment to take the tie into extra time.

But De Bruyne’s calm finish with the final kick of the game denied Bristol City a creditable draw on the night and confirmed Manchester City’s place in the final where they will face either Arsenal or Chelsea, who play the second leg of their semi-final on Wednesday.

The Robins, meanwhile, will turn their attention to converting their current fifth place in the second tier into promotion – with their four previous victories over Premier League opposition in the Carabao Cup giving them a taste of what they hope is to come.

Guardiola has previously used this competition to rest and rotate a number of his star players, but he picked a near full-strength side for the second leg, making just two changes to the team that beat Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday.

His selection was tribute to the way Bristol City had performed at the Etihad a fortnight ago, impressing many with their adventure and attacking intent.

There would be no such repeat at Ashton Gate, however, with the away side taking complete control almost from the very first whistle.

Aguero’s cross clipped the bar and David Silva’s low shot had to be palmed away even before Sane’s opener – and once Manchester City were able to add a ruthless streak to their overall dominance it was always going to be a big ask for the home team.

Despite the impressive late rally, culminating in makeshift striker Flint stabbing in for 2-2, the visitors were still more than good value for their victory across both legs.

They had 68% possession and finished Tuesday’s game with 28 shots on goal, scoring from three of the six they got on target.

Can Man City do the quadruple?
Guardiola is now just one game from winning his first silverware with Manchester City, having endured only the second barren season of his managerial career in 2016-17.

The 47-year-old Spaniard, who won 14 trophies in four years as Barcelona boss and a further seven in three years at Bayern Munich, is hoping to lead City to an unprecedented quadruple.

He has repeatedly played down his team’s chances of achieving that feat, yet they continue to fight strongly on all fronts – already 12 points clear in the Premier League, they have also reached the last 16 of the Champions League and the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Domestically, only Liverpool have found a way to beat them so far this season, meaning the one apparent remaining question mark is over whether they can translate their league and cup form into European competition.

If they are able to progress beyond FC Basel and into the quarter-finals of the Champions League, even at this early stage they may seldom have a better opportunity of sealing a clean sweep of league and cups.

A step too far for brave Bristol City
Lee Johnson and his players earned plenty of plaudits after their first-leg defeat, with Guardiola describing Bristol City as a “fantastic team” and lauding their style of play and attacking intent as “good for the show”.

Despite trailing on aggregate throughout the second leg, the fact they became only the second team since October to score twice in a domestic match against Manchester City spoke volumes of both their quality and spirit.

The Robins had already seen off top-flight sides Watford, Crystal Palace, Stoke City and famously Manchester United on their way to the last four – though two legs against the runaway Premier League leaders was always going to be a tall order.

Following a tentative opening period, during which they were pinned back for long spells, they looked much more of a threat with the half-time arrival of £5.3m summer signing Famara Diedhiou.

Head coach Johnson will now hope the return of Diedhiou, who has missed the past three months with a knee injury, can also inspire his side towards achieving the ultimate goal of securing top-flight football for the first time since 1980.

“I’m very proud, not just of the team, but of the club,” said Johnson.

“It was a fantastic run. The fact is, it has taken them two injury-time goals in both legs to beat us.

“We came close to a draw today. They are a top, top side, probably the best side I’ve seen live.”

What they said:
Bristol City boss Lee Johnson: “We came close to a draw. They are a top, top side, probably the best side I’ve seen live.

“They have so many players that are intricate and have class on the ball and sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say ‘they are a better side than us’.

“But the spirit we showed, we never gave in and we continued to try and attack and scored two goals and not many teams can score two goals against a side like that.”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Sky Sports: “We are so happy to be there, to reach this final. We played an amazing game until 2-0 and then we lost control, these type of games never end until the end.

“At 2-0 we knew it would be easier because they needed three or four goals but with one minute left it was 2-2 and anything could happen.

“It’s not for me, it’s for Manchester City, a club who are trying to reach another level. We try to keep going, the important thing for me is to be there.”

What next?
Bristol City resume their bid for promotion to the Premier League as they host QPR on Saturday, 27 January (15:00 GMT).

The Premier League’s congested schedule is a “disaster” for players, says Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

City, who have a 12-point lead in the table with a game in hand, face Watford on Tuesday, their fourth match in 11 days over the holiday period.

Guardiola saw key players Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne suffer injuries at Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Spaniard said: “If you tell me that technically, physically it’s good for the players: no, it’s a disaster.”

City confirmed on Monday that Jesus had suffered a medial collateral ligament injury and would “undergo further examinations to establish the extent of his lay-off”.

Jesus later wrote on social media: “Thank God it is not very bad and I won’t have to go through any surgery. Promise to be back as soon as possible!”

City’s run of 18 successive wins came to an end with the goalless draw at Selhurst Park, the first time they have failed to score in the league this term.

Their 246 hours between the four matches over Christmas and New Year is one of the longer gaps in the Premier League, with Leicester having only 213 hours between the start and finish of their four fixtures.

Having managed in Spain and Germany, where winter breaks are employed each season, Guardiola said of the British domestic structure: “It’s a tradition. I have to adapt.

“Sometimes you have three days’ recovery, sometimes four, sometimes two, everybody is the same.

“Last season we had less recovery than this season, maybe next season we will have a little more.

“It is what it is. This kind of thing I can give my opinion, but do you believe I am going to [get the authorities to] change something? No way.”

Guardiola, who urged referees to “protect” players from overly physical challenges, will be without Jesus “for a little more than a month” and is still waiting to learn the extent of De Bruyne’s injury.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has reiterated that his side won’t go through the Premier League season unbeaten after their 18-game top-flight winning run was ended by a goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

City conceded an injury-time penalty at Selhurst Park but goalkeeper Ederson saved the spot-kick from Luka Milivojevic, prompting Match of the Day host Gary Lineker to claim Guardiola’s side have an “air of invincibility about them”.

The draw preserves their unbeaten league status this season and takes them 14 points clear at the top of the table – the biggest gap between the leaders and the chasing pack at this stage of the season in top-flight history.

“I am not thinking to be unbeaten,” said Guardiola afterwards. “That is not going to happen.”

Despite the result, it could still prove a costly afternoon for City with Gabriel Jesus leaving the field injured and in tears in the first half, and the league’s top assist-maker Kevin de Bruyne stretchered off after a heavy tackle from Jason Puncheon in the final minute.

It leaves City with only one fit senior striker in Sergio Aguero, who replaced Jesus at Selhurst Park.

While Chelsea and Manchester United trail City by some distance, they may see a small light at the end of the tunnel in a title race that appeared to be all but over before the turn of the year.

The last team to go unbeaten throughout a Premier League season were Arsenal in 2003-04 but Guardiola still feels it is unlikely City will match them.

“Maybe Arsene [Wenger] is worried about that but I tell him many times that 2004 run is for him,” he said. “Today is completely different to 2004.

“Here are now more strong teams, a lot of competitions, a lot of games. That is not going to happen. I try to win the game, and especially focus on Watford.”

Palace were rewarded after their defensive grit and off-the-ball energy shone through in an enthralling contest.

The question, after they pressed so ferociously in the first half, was whether they were fit enough in the midst of the congested Christmas fixture-list to keep it up.

But the hosts did just that, with midfielder Luka Milivojevic covering more ground than anyone on the pitch (12.69 km), even if his late spot-kick was struck too close to City goalkeeper Ederson after Raheem Sterling fouled Wilfried Zaha in the box in the 92nd minute.

The point means the Eagles start the new year outside of the bottom three, a point above West Ham in 18th – symbolic for a club that suffered seven straight defeats without scoring during their miserable start to the season.

They also secured only their second home clean sheet in the league all season against a team which have scored 102 goals in 2017.

The downside to playing their energetic part in such an eventful contest was the first-half injury to centre-back Scott Dann, with Hodgson already light on defenders in Mamadou Sakho’s injury absence because of a calf problem.

But they can take heart from creating other opportunities to win aside from the penalty; with full-back Patrick van Aanholt testing Ederson in the first half and Andros Townsend wasting a gilt-edged chance to convert on 78 minutes.

With Yohan Cabaye, who drew applause for closing down City defender Nicolas Otamendi in the first half, playing further forward than he did in their previous defeat by Arsenal, Palace had a courage with the ball to match their resilience off it.

“I’m very proud of the team’s performance,” said Hodgson. “I know how difficult it is to play a team of Manchester City’s quality.

“Before the game we would have been jumping through hoops at having claimed a point, then you get a penalty late in the game, so there is an element of sadness at a chance missed.

“But I’ve said to the players: ‘continue that level of performance week after week and we’ve got a good chance of staying in the league’.”

No crisis for City but wear and tear mounts

Not winning their 19th consecutive game is hardly evidence of the wheels coming off City’s remarkable title bid, but there were signs that could be problematic in south London.

Their ninth game in December saw more onus on the considerable creativity of Kevin de Bruyne in playmaker David Silva’s continued absence.

But the previously sensational Belgian’s set-pieces were off colour – only one of six deliveries was dangerous, and his passing accuracy (80%) was less than any other starting City player.

Now Guardiola may have to cope without him after that late withdrawal, although he appeared able to walk alongside club physios after being carried off.

Leroy Sane could step up to fill the gap in the coming weeks but he struggled too. The 21-year-old won only half of his 14 individual duels, and was often second best to Palace defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

He was meekly dispossessed by the on-loan Manchester United man in the first half, and berated by De Bruyne over the timing of another run. Then he was booked for kicking the ball away in frustration.

It remains to be seen if Guardiola moves to bolster his attack by prising Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in January, however the City boss said in his post-match news conference that he expects the forward to stay with the Gunners.

“He is a player for Arsenal and I think he is going to stay there,” he said. “In two days we have another game after that we have meetings. My feeling now is Alexis is an Arsenal player.”

Man of the match – Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

Kyle Walker (right) challenges Wilfried Zaha
Kyle Walker rarely let Palace’s in-form Wilfried Zaha get the better of him, and made more interceptions (three), gained more possessions (13) and sprinted faster (34.69 km/h) than any other City player.

Rare away blank for City – the stats

  • This was City’s first away goalless draw in the Premier League since March 2016 against Norwich City, ending a run of 34 matches in which at least one goal was scored.
  • Manchester City failed to win a Premier League game for the first time since August, bringing an end to their 18-game winning run.
  • Only two teams have won more Premier League points in a calendar year than Man City in 2017 (98) – Man Utd in 1993 (102) and Chelsea in 2005 (101).
  • Crystal Palace have only lost one of their last 10 Premier League games (W3 D6), having lost 13 of their 16 before this run.
  • Roy Hodgson has now failed to see his side score in his past five Premier League matches against Man City (D2 L3), a goalless run that stands at 465 minutes.
  • This was Palace’s fourth clean sheet in their past eight Premier League games, as many as they’d managed in their 25 matches prior to this.
  • Manchester City goalkeepers have saved 10 of the past 17 penalties they’ve faced in all competitions, with four different goalkeepers saving those 10 (Joe Hart, Claudio Bravo, Willy Caballero and Ederson).
  • Wayne Hennessey was the first Crystal Palace goalkeeper since Nigel Martyn in May 1993 to keep a Premier League clean sheet against Man City.
  • Crystal Palace have missed five penalties since the start of last season, two more than any other Premier League side.
  • Raheem Sterling is the only Premier League player to have both won and conceded a penalty this season.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Chelsea

Crystal Palace secured an unlikely victory over champions Chelsea to register their first points and goals of the season.

Roy Hodgson’s men came into the clash with renewed hope, following the return of star man Wilfried Zaha, and his inclusion proved pivotal.

Cesar Azpilicueta’s own-goal gave the Eagles the lead before Tiemoue Bakayoko equalised for the visitors with a measured header.

But Zaha’s goal just before the half time interval ensured Hodgson’s men got their season up and running at long last.

Manchester City 7-2 Stoke City

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City showed their attacking prowess as they thrashed Stoke at the Etihad Stadium.

Two goals from Gabriel Jesus, as well as strikes from Raheem Sterling, David Silva, Fernandinho, Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva, blew the Potters away.

The victory leaves the Citizens two points clear at the top of the table, following Manchester United’s goalless draw against Liverpool.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 AFC Bournemouth

Tottenham collected their first Premier League victory at Wembley Stadium after edging past Bournemouth.

Christian Eriksen’s early second half goal proved to be the difference between the two sides as Mauricio Pochettino’s side shook off their unwanted record at the national stadium.

The win keeps Spurs within five points of leaders Manchester City.
