Manchester United have triggered a one-year extension clause in Ashley Young’s contract which will keep him at the club until summer 2019.

The 32-year-old joined the club from Aston Villa in 2011 as a winger but now plays more as a full-back.

Young has won the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and Europa League in his time at Old Trafford.

He has played in 29 matches this season, scoring two goals, and won a spot back in the England squad.

Young has made 31 international appearances and was named in manager Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this month’s friendly matches against the Netherlands and Italy.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says it is “likely” forward Alexis Sanchez will join Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Sanchez, 29, is out of contract in June and is thought to have agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford club.

“I worked on transfers for 30 years so it is likely to happen, but at any moment it can break down,” said Wenger.

Wenger also said it was a “possibility” United midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be a part of the deal.

“I like the player,” added Wenger. “We played many times against him when he was at Dortmund. He appreciated the quality of our games. The wages would not be a problem.”

Armenia international Mkhitaryan, 28, has not agreed terms on a move but was left out of the league win over Stoke on Monday, with manager Jose Mourinho confirming the decision was not tactical.

Aubameyang? Malcom? Or will Sanchez remain?

At a news conference on Thursday, Wenger said Chile international Sanchez will feature against Crystal Palace on Saturday if he does not complete a transfer.

“As long as it’s not over the line you have to accept it may not happen,” added the Frenchman. “These kind of things are not guaranteed.

“I have no problem with Sanchez’s attitude. He was in training yesterday fully committed. He is 29 years old and the next contract will of course be very important to him.”

Arsenal sold forward Theo Walcott to Everton on Wednesday and Wenger has been linked with moves for Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bordeaux forward Malcom to bolster his squad.

He said the club were not close to completing a deal for 20-year-old Brazilian Malcolm but added that Aubameyang, 28, would “fit in”.

Asked about any deal for the Gabon international, Wenger said: “This kind of thing is better when it’s secret and when you don’t comment before announcing it when it’s over the line.

“Would he fit in? Yes, because character can be a very positive note and negative – but overall you look at the achievement of a player over his career.

“When it’s been positive the character has been used in a positive way.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says Burnley are among the contenders for European qualification.

Burnley are three points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool on 32 points after 19 Premier League games, despite securing only 40 points in total last season.

Sean Dyche’s side have already taken points off some of the top six, including an impressive 3-2 away win against Chelsea on the opening day of the season, and they will be looking to do the same at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Mourinho admits he has been impressed by Burnley’s performances this term and believes they are likely to be among the clubs challenging for the top six at the end of the season.

“It’s great [Burnley’s form]. If survival was the objective, I think the objective is in the pocket, it’s totally under control,” said Mourinho in an exclusive Christmas Day interview with Sky Sports News.

“If the objective is to finish top ten, they will do it. If the objective is to fight for European positions, they are there so they have the right to fight, so it’ll be a difficult opponent.

“If you compare what they are doing with the initial objectives, it’s a very good season.”

Burnley have the fourth-best defence in the league, behind Manchester City, United and Chelsea, conceding only 15 goals and Mourinho expects his side to face a tough task if they are to break down the Clarets defence.

“I think the record of goals conceded speaks for itself,” he added.

“They conceded three in the last one but before that they were really amazing so they defend very very well.

“Everybody knows the way they play, if you expect them to play creative beautiful football, they don’t do that.

“But if you talk about direct objective, pragmatic and play with their strength, I think they are very very good.

“They’ve worked with the same manager for a few years now, I think the identification between the players, the style of play, the manager, the manager’s ideas is very good, so what they do they do well.”

Alvaro Morata scored his first goal since September as Chelsea deservedly beat Manchester United to move a point behind the Red Devils in the Premier League.

Morata powerfully headed in his eighth goal for the club 10 minutes after the break as the Blues recorded a third consecutive league win.

David de Gea kept out further efforts from Morata and Eden Hazard as Chelsea looked to add to their lead.

United forward Marcus Rashford flashed an effort wide in the closing stages before substitute Marouane Fellaini’s close-range strike was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea remain fourth while second-placed United trail leaders Manchester City, who beat Arsenal 3-1 earlier, by eight points.

There were five games to follow Chelsea’s thrilling win over Watford earlier in the afternoon and talkSPORT.com has the latest results from the Premier League.

Huddersfield Town 2-1 Manchester United

Huddersfield ended Manchester United’s unbeaten start to the season with a famous win at the John Smith’s Stadium, courtesy of goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre.

Marcus Rashford suggested the comeback could be on by grabbing a goal back in the 78th minute, but the Terriers deservedly hung on to record their first league win against United since 1952.

Manchester City 3-0 Burnley

Sergio Aguero, as many expected, equalled Eric Brook’s tally of 177 goals to go level at the top of Man City’s all-time goalscoring record in a victory that sent Pep Guardiola’s side five points clear at the summit of the Premier League table.

The Citizens weren’t at their fluid best in attack, with a number of players, including Gabriel Jesus, rested, but goals from Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane in the final twenty minutes of the game sealed an ultimately comfortable win.

Newcastle United 1-0 Crystal Palace

Newcastle left it late, with substitute Mikel Merino scoring the winner in the 86th minute, as Crystal Palace failed to pick up from where they left off against Chelsea last weekend.

The Eagles have clearly improved under Roy Hodgson and did look the more likely team to win the three points at St James’ Park, but Merino was on hand to leave the Magpies sixth in the league.

Stoke City 1-2 Bournemouth

Bournemouth have been hugely disappointing in front of goal this season, but rediscovered their touch at the bet365 Stadium, with the damage done by Andrew Surman and Junior Stanislas within 20 minutes of the contest.

Stoke responded in the 68th minute, through Mame Biram Diouf, but their struggles continue as they sit only one point above the Cherries in the relegation zone.

Swansea City 1-2 Leicester City

Leicester shook off the disappointment of Craig Shakespeare’s sacking by making a winning start to life under caretaker manager Michael Appleton.

A dominant display saw the Foxes record only their second of the season, as a Federico Fernandez own goal and a counter-attack finished off by Shinji Okazaki sealed the points. Alfie Mawson’s strike was little more than consolation for the Swans.

Citi Sports editor Nathan Quao rolls out his column on another Monday and this week, he talks about Aduana’s capture of the Ghana Premier League, the talk surrounding Man United’s goalless draw at Anfield and Roger Federer’s superior handling of Rafa Nadal in Shanghai.

All hail Aduana, new kings of Ghanaian football

When Aduana Stars started assembling very good pieces from last season, the talk was that they were getting ready to win the Ghana Premier League.

Noah Martey was purchased from Bechem United while Zakaria Mumuni joined from WAFA. The likes of Derrick Sasraku and Godfred Saka were maintained together with Daniel Darkwah and that meant that you had a solid base and a good mix of new players; the right mix for a Premier League challenge and they duly delivered.

They went unbeaten until Week 8 and maybe that was why their coach Yusif Abubakar said that he knew they would win the title.

The performance, in my opinion, which underlined their seriousness was the 3-3 draw with Hearts of Oak in Accra. The refereeing on the day from Prince Amoah was very dodgy but Aduana took the lead three times in that game and they played without any fear.

A closer look at the statistics reveals just how well they set themselves up for the title.

They lost none of their home matches and they have lost only four of their 14 away matches played so far (the 15th is at AshGold on final day). Their away record produced only 18 out of 45 points but those points were a very healthy buffer for the 12 home games they won.

Clearly, they knew their way round the league and they worked for their title.

WAFA could have made it tougher but a lack of ambition, at least in my mind, shown by their head coach Klavs Rasmussen took the league away from them.

With Bolga All Stars already relegated, the fight for survival has become more important for the 8 teams lying between 8th and 15th place.

They are separated by just 3 points and any failures on final day could sink any two of them. Things just got hotter!!!

Jose Smart or Jose Scared at Anfield?

skysports-manchester-united-manager-jose-mourinho-anfield-liverpool_4127922

By 1:30 pm on Saturday October 14, the debate surrounding the match between Liverpool and Manchester United had been broken into two very distinct camps.

One camp said that Joe Mourinho should have gone for the victory against the old enemy. The Liverpool defence had been poor and they did not have Sadio Mane and thus, staying compact was not ambitious enough.

The other camp believed that the point was good for a season of 38 matches. They stated that the battle was long and arduous and so, a point gained at a team that knows how to play the big games and will slaughter your team if you attempt exchanging blows with it is important.

Both camps hold very valid stances but I go with the second group. Liverpool love this match and they were primed to deliver the death blow had Man United tried to go gung-ho at them.

Of course, Man United could have attempted to build more as the game wore on and they could have been rewarded but Liverpool did not also let themselves go completely. They always had their midfield in place because for once, they recognised their shortcomings and they did not also want to risk getting sucker-punched.

Is that also not self-preservation? Man United have rarely dominated Liverpool at Anfield. They have played on the counter and they have saved themselves from defeat so many times.

Only 15 goals were scored in Sir Alex Ferguson’s last 16 trips to Liverpool. Jose Mourinho is not the first Man United to think about not losing. A point gained will be handy later.

The Federer Express delivered in Shanghai

skysports-roger-federer-tennis-shanghai-masters_4125772

It has been a great year for both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Like phoenixes, the two men have risen from injury to go past every one and their latest meeting in the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Sunday stressed the great form they were both in.

But the match and the year’s subscription of gloating belonged to Roger Federer.

I saw him win the Australian Open early this year and I wondered if he could keep going. He has done so and Sunday’s showing was even more dominant. He won 6-4, 6-3 and recorded ten aces while doing so.

Federer, in his older years, has played with a lot of calmness and focus. He does not overfuss in his decision-making and the shot selection is even more exquisite.

No one knows if he will win a lot of major titles in coming years because Novak Djokovic will return and Nadal seems to have the aggression and determination to want to keep going.

But Federer, on Sunday, reminded all of us that with proper planning and great choices in terms of tournament, he could win a few more before calling it a day.

Notable mention to Mauro Icardi.

Mauro Icardi celebrates the first of his three goals on Sunday. (Image credit: Getty Images)

I am not a huge fan of Inter Milan’s Argentine captain but overlooking his performance in the Milan Derby on Sunday will be very wrong.

He gave a very good shift and like all great strikers, he got his goal. Infact, he got three; my favourite being his improvised sliced volley from Ivan Perisic (who I think Man United should have signed) to make the score 2-1.

Great workout ahead of Inter’s clash with Napoli next weekend. I am not missing that one.

That’s it for this week, folks.

Burnley 0-0 Huddersfield Town

It was a game of few chances at Turf Moor as Burnley and Huddersfield played out a goalless draw.

Neither side registered a shot on target in the first half, but Huddersfield’s Tom Ince and Laurent Depoitre came relatively close in the second.

Burnley’s strike force failed to turn up in the game and the result leaves both teams level on nine points in the Premier League table.

Everton 2-1 AFC Bournemouth

One-time Everton outcast Oumar Niasse earned his way into Ronald Koeman’s good books as he bagged a late brace against Bournemouth to seal all three points.

The visiting Cherries had originally taken a first half lead courtesy of Josh King’s low strike into the bottom corner.

Everton, who had been struggling for form of late, were then handed a vital lifeline as Niasse – who wasn’t even given a squad number at the start of the season – turned in an equaliser in the 76th minute.

The forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Hull City, then bundled in the winner with just nine minutes remaining of normal time.

Manchester City 5-0 Crystal Palace

Manchester City cruised once more to a high-scoring victory as basement club Crystal Palace failed to contain the plethora of attacking talent at Pep Guardiola’s disposal.

On-loan Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek gave City a scare as he struck the post in the first half but it was soon business as usual.

Leroy Sane opened the scoring just before the break with a delightful finish before Raheem Sterling grabbed a double within the space of eight minutes after the interval.

Goal machine Sergio Aguero added a customary strike – as he closes in on City’s all-time scoring record – in the 79th minute.

But the pick of the goals came from forgotten man Fabian Delph who curled in the fifth goal late on to consign Roy Hodgson’s Palace to another desolate defeat.

Southampton 0-0 Manchester United

Romelu Lukaku’s sixth goal of the season was enough for Manchester United to continue their winning run against Southampton.

The Belgian forward pounced in the 20th minute to turn home from close range after Saints keeper Fraser Forster saved his initial effort.

Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands late in injury time but, while the result was not as routine as normal, United remain second in the league table and are still unbeaten.

Stoke City 0-4 Chelsea

Alvaro Morata banished memories of Diego Costa as the Spanish striker bagged a hat-trick in Chelsea’s demolition job of Stoke City.

The summer arrival opened the scoring just two minutes in as Stoke’s back three – boasting just a single recognised central defender – failed to deal with Cesar Azpilicueta’s long ball forward.

A terrible mistake from Darren Fletcher allowed Pedro in to double the Chelsea advantage on the half hour mark.

Mark Hughes may come to regret his decision to substitute Bruno Martins Indi in the 76th minute as Morata soon doubled his tally the following minute.

The Spaniard then sealed his first hat-trick in English football in the 82nd minute with Antonio Conte’s Blues looking comfortable throughout.

Swansea City 1-2 Watford

Richarlison was the hero for Watford as the Brazilian struck a dramatic 90th minute winner to give the Hornets all three points against Swansea.

Andre Gray had opened the scoring in the first half – his first goal since moving from Burnley in the summer – with an expert finish into the top corner past Lukasz Fabianski.

Swansea striker Tammy Abraham levelled for the Swans in the 56th minute but Richarlison’s dramatic winner silenced the home crowd at the Liberty Stadium.

Watford now sit fifth in the table while Swansea lie in 14th place.

Romelu Lukaku announced his arrival at Old Trafford by scoring twice on his Premier League debut for Manchester United as they embarrassed West Ham.

Jose Mourinho’s team were a constant threat against a poor Hammers side, offering excitement and encouragement to their supporters on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season.

Lukaku, a £75m summer signing from Everton, put the Red Devils ahead with a rising drive off the post after racing onto Marcus Rashford’s pass.

The Belgium international doubled the lead after half-time, glancing in a header from Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s inswinging free-kick.

United teenager Rashford curled against the inside of Joe Hart’s left-hand post before substitute Anthony Martial ended the match as a contest with a slick finish.

There was still time for a fourth, however, as Paul Pogba curled in from distance.

The Hammers offered little going forward in a passive performance, although new signing Marko Arnautovic did flick a header onto the top of the home crossbar at 2-0.

The Red Devils have now lost only one of their 14 opening-day Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford, while West Ham’s season began with a record 11th defeat.

Stylish United set out their stall

Manchester United might have won the Europa League and League Cup in Mourinho’s debut season at Old Trafford, but Red Devils supporters will be expecting, if not demanding, a serious title challenge after a less-than-adequate sixth-placed finish last term.

Mourinho spent almost £150m on Everton striker Lukaku, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof this summer in a bid to achieve it.

Although Mourinho’s new-look side were outclassed by Real Madrid in Tuesday’s Super Cup defeat, solace could be taken that the European champions contained a level of quality unlikely to be seen in the Premier League this season – and certainly not from their opening opponents.

In contrast to a workmanlike performance against Madrid, the home side played with verve and purpose as the Hammers sat back in a bid to contain and frustrate them.

It was a tactic that opponents used to successfully stifle Mourinho’s side on several occasions at Old Trafford last season, but once Lukaku broke the deadlock the Hammers never looked like clawing their way back into the game.

Style is equally as important as substance for many United fans and their attacking approach – which saw them rack up 22 shots – will provide encouragement to supporters hoping for a first Premier League title since 2013.
United’s striking future outshines its past

The opening weekend provided a tale of two strikers at Old Trafford: one a familiar face looking to haunt some old friends, the other a new arrival seeking to make an instant impression.

New Hammers signing Javier Hernandez received a warm welcome on his first return to the club where he made his name, but saw his appearance overshadowed by the latest man charged with firing the Red Devils to success.

Lukaku, who opened his account in Tuesday’s defeat by Madrid, impressed throughout with his strong running, physical presence and link-up play.

But his two goals were what really caught the eye.

In truth, it seemed almost inevitable that the Belgian would find the net against the Hammers, having scored in nine of his 10 games against them while at Everton.

The 24-year-old eased any growing twitchiness – as United dominated the opening half an hour without testing Joe Hart – by smashing in the opener, then gave them valuable breathing space with a predatory header.

He had a chance to complete his hat-trick too, only to see Pablo Zabalata block his goalbound shot with a sliding tackle and then blaze a rising effort over.

“When you play for Manchester United, you have a job to do and mine is to score goals. It is promising,” said the former Everton and Chelsea striker.

Limp display dampens Hammers’ pre-season optimism

Optimism has been high at West Ham after a productive summer for manager Slaven Bilic – but some of that may have disappeared after they were easily brushed aside at Old Trafford.

Bilic said afterwards it was hard to find any positives, but one poor performance on the opening weekend does not mean the Hammers should necessarily panic, especially as several key players – including Manuel Lanzini, Andy Carroll and Michail Antonio – were missing through injury.

The Hammers’ transfer policy over the summer has been clear: experienced internationals who have proven Premier League quality.

That arrived in the shape of Manchester City title-winning duo Joe Hart and Pablo Zabaleta, Stoke attacking midfielder Marko Arnautovic and former Manchester United striker Hernandez.

Right-back Zabaleta probably came out with the most credit after a typically industrious display.

But questions may be asked over the ease with which England keeper Hart allowed Pogba’s strike to creep in, while Hernandez barely had a sniff of a chance against his former club.

The Hammers only had one serious chance in a limp first-half performance – Edimilson Fernandes’s fierce shot parried by David De Gea in the final kick before half-time – before Arnautovic’s half-chance after the break.

Manchester United have announced the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Everton.

Lukaku has signed a five-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, after completing a medical in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Sky sources say the fee could eventually rise to £90m, and United held off late competition from Chelsea for the Belgium striker’s signature.

Lukaku will join up with his new team-mates in Los Angeles ahead of their pre-season schedule in the United States.

Jose Mourinho, who managed the 24-year-old at Chelsea, told the United website: “Romelu is a natural fit for Manchester United. He is a big personality and a big player. It is only natural that he wants to develop his career at the biggest club.

“He will be a great addition to the group and I know they will make him very welcome. I am really looking forward to working with him again.”

Lukaku said: “I would like to start by thanking Everton and the fans for the last four wonderful seasons, I have made some special friends and we have shared some amazing moments.

“However, when Manchester United and Jose Mourinho come knocking at the door it is an opportunity of a lifetime and one that I could not turn down.

“You could see the fight, determination and the spirit in this team during the Europa League final and I want to become a part of that.

“I cannot wait to run out at Old Trafford in front of 75,000 fans but before that pre-season is where the hard work starts and I am looking forward to that first training session.”

Confirmation of Lukaku’s transfer came hours after Wayne Rooney faced the press for the first time since moving in the other direction.

Ronald Koeman sat alongside Rooney at the press conference and said Lukaku had made “the right decision”, adding: “Lets’ hope everything goes well for him because I like him. I like the player.”

Rooney said: “It is some time since I said that the only Premier League club I would play for other than Manchester United was Everton, so I am delighted that the move has happened.

“Thirteen years ago I went to United with the intention of winning trophies and I have been fortunate to be a part of one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

“I have come back to Everton because I believe Ronald Koeman is building a team that can win something and I look forward to playing my part in making that a reality for the club I have supported since a boy.”

Everton manager Ronald Koeman said: “Wayne has shown me that ambition that we need and that winning mentality – he knows how to win titles and I’m really happy he’s decided to come home.

“He loves Everton and he was desperate to come back. He is still only 31 and I don’t have any doubts about his qualities. It’s fantastic he’s here.”

Rooney switches back to Merseyside as part of a deal that will see United sign striker Romelu Lukaku for up to £90m.

After an illustrious time under Sir Alex Ferguson in which he won five Premier League titles and the Champions League, he struggled to nail down a place in Jose Mourinho’s first-team last season after a difficult previous campaign under Louis van Gaal.

He picked up a Europa League winners medal last season and also won the FA Cup under Van Gaal, and leaves Old Trafford having scored 251 goals in over 500 games.
