The issue of music royalties has been a big topic for Ghanaian musicians as regards how effective systems and structures governing their intellectual property have been.

Recently, rapper M.anifest told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in an interview that he had not received a penny from the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) as royalties since he started music.

“Shout outs to GHAMRO. I know you people are working but please work hard so I can get my royalties. I haven’t received a single penny from you guys,” he said.

However, the Chairman of GHAMRO, Rex Omar, told Citi Showbiz that M.anifest had not assigned his works to GHAMRO – which means he was not a member and could not take his royalties from them.

M.anifest responded to Rex Omar’s position on the matter after Starr FM had tweeted a similar statement Rex Omar made on their station.

According to the ‘godMC’ rapper, even though he has not registered with the South African Music Right Organisation (SAMRO) and UK’s Performing Rights Society (PRS), he gets royalties from them.

“I am not a member of samro or prs but s.a. and u.k. royalties have been flowing. Thanks for understanding. You’re a legend BTW. Much respect,” he wrote.

In the meantime, Rex Omar has stated that GHAMRO is bent on employing the best strategies to collect royalties due its members.

Ghanaians Against Child Abuse (GACA), a campaign to ensure that all forms of abuses against children are highlighted and tackled has been launched at Katiejeli in the Kpandai district of the northern region.

The campaign is intended to created awareness on the effects of child abuse especially among children of school going age.

This leg of the campaign received support from music stars, M.anifest and Mzvee, and sports journalist, Gary Al Smith, among others.

Speaking to Citi News, the District Chief Executive for Kpandai, Atta Emmanuel Kofi Tatablata bemoaned the situation in the district where children of school going age are usually seen loitering during school hours.

“They are also sometimes engaged in farming and other income-generating activities when they should be in school and most parents do not care about the well-being of the children,” he added.

The DCE, therefore, urged parents to ensure that children get the best of education, healthcare, shelter, feeding, clothing and affection to enable them to develop their full potential.

“As parent or guardians, I urge you all to ensure that basic necessities are provided for the children to enable them to grow to be responsible leaders. I call on you to desist from the practice of taking out the female children from school and giving them out into early marriage as it denies them of access to education.”

On his part, the Regional Director of the Department of Community Development in the Northern Region appealed to all stakeholders to get on board to realign their activities towards addressing issues of child abuse, neglect, violence and exploitation that will prepare the children to be responsible leaders in the future.

The chief of Katiejeli, Nana Adjabaso also pledged the support of the community to help advocate for the prevention of all forms of abuse in the area.

This Child Protection Social Drive seeks to reduce the acceptance of social practices that have negative consequences on the protection of children by creating a critical mass of people capable to promote the adoption of behaviours favourable to the protection of children and adolescents.

This drive is targeting a reduction in cases of violence against children and adolescents.

One of the songs on Ghanaian rapper M.anifest’s ‘Nowhere Cool’ album has been featured on the soundtrack of a documentary called ‘Hoops Africa – Ubuntu Matters.’

The rapper announced this via his twitter handle expressing his joy at hearing his song ‘B.E.A.R in the documentary which aired on NBA TV 24th and 26th December, 2017.

“Airing on NBA TV! Dope to have my song B.E.A.R featured on the soundtrack of this Hoops Africa documentary,” he tweeted.

Hoops Africa: Ubuntu Matters is a documentary spotlighting basketball’s impact on society and the development of the sport on the African continent.

The film begins in Harare, Zimbabwe, focusing on the journey of 16-year-old basketball player, Watida, who was raised participating in Hoops 4 Hope, a nonprofit organisation that uses basketball to teach life skills to children growing up in the city’s high-density neighbourhoods.

After being named a Basketball Without Borders participant, Watida then travels to Johannesburg, South Africa, to Basketball Without Borders, a clinic for the most talented basketball players in Africa.

The film then covers the action surrounding the NBA’s Africa Game, which is the first time the NBA played a game on African soil. This storyline also examines how basketball has the power to transcend continents through the story of the Boston Celtics, who rallied around the African philosophy of Ubuntu to overcome adversity on their way to winning the 2008 NBA championship.

Hoops Africa explores the dreams of young Zimbabwean youth and how basketball can be an incredible force for good. Through interviews with young Zimbabweans, prominent NBA players and legendary coaches, Hoops Africa demonstrates that the game of basketball can literally change lives across the world.

Featuring Hakeem Olajuwon, Dikembe Mutombo, Adam Silver, Luol Deng, Luc Mbah a Moute, Chris Paul, Doc Rivers, Paul Pierce, and many more NBA greats, this documentary shows us all why #UbuntuMatters.

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper, M.anifest, has urged Ghanaians to use music to tell the country’s history and not for propaganda.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, M.anifest said music should be used to tell only the truth and not lies.

“…not to use it as a propaganda piece, but as in artist being the heartbeat of culture and being able to express truth about today, and also things about today that will be useful in the future…so that 50 years from now, when you listen to the music of today, it will give you clues as to what was happening with leadership, economy, social interactions between men and women.”

M.anifest made the remark when his views were sought on the Citi Breakfast Show in relation to that subject.

Host of the show, Bernard Koku Avle, posited that instead of politicians dominating sources of Ghana’s history, music could be adopted as a tool of telling the country’s story.

But M.anifest said because some musicians are paid to skew facts, music cannot always be “honest and truthful.”

“We can use Germany as an example and even some African countries in which sometimes people are commissioned essentially to tell a lie and it’s very powerful using music,” he added.

Debate of founder or founders of Ghana

The comment by M.anifest comes on the back of an unending debate of who the true founding fathers of Ghana are. Whereas some believe that Nkrumah founded Ghana and must be celebrated as such, members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) think otherwise.

According to them, others including J.B. Danquah helped in that vein hence must all be acknowledged.

In view of this, President Akufo-Addo has triggered the necessary Executive Instruments to designate August 4 as Founders Day and September 21 in every year as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

If you want to amass wealth, music is a wrong profession to go into.

This assertion is by award-winning Ghanaian rapper, M.anifest who gave the advice on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday.

“…I always tell people that you don’t come into something like music wanting to make money, so if you do, just forget it. It goes beyond that and the fact of the reality [in there is] that a lot of people do not succeed,” he added.

M.anifest who is a first class economics graduate said he does not regret going into music saying it has opened new opportunities to him.

“When you take the road less traveled you become an artiste and you do all these things that require a certain level of risk and unpredictability, you have to really have a strong sense of conviction that this is your calling and for me I have that. And also the fact that the longer I do this the more I can assume different roles not just be simply a musician but be doing many other different things, sometimes playing other roles using the music as a vehicle. I’ve had the opportunity to write articles for the Guardian.  I think every musician here is forced to be an entrepreneur,” he added.

M.anifest made the remarks during a discussion on using music as a tool to tell the history of Ghana.

He noted it should instead be used cautiously and not for propaganda purposes.

“not to use it as a propaganda piece but as in artist being the heartbeat of culture and being able to express truth about today and also things about today that in the future…so that 50 years from now, when you listen to the music of today, it will give you clues as to what was happening with leadership, economy, social interactions between men and women. But the danger is that music and art has been used for propaganda purposes it’s not always honest and truthful. We can use Germany as an example and even some African countries in which sometimes people are commissioned essentially to tell a lie and its very powerful using music,” he added.

Allianz Ghana, an established stakeholder in the Ghanaian insurance market, in collaboration with OAfrica, presents the “Allianz Awards 2017,” a special ceremony to recognise individuals who have gone above and beyond all kinds of difficulties to achieve their dreams.

This event will take place at the National Theatre, on Saturday, June 17th 2017.

According to, Mr. Patrick Prado, the Managing Director, the Allianz Awards 2017 is about “celebrating Ghanaian men and women who have defied all odds to prove that the world belongs to those who dare.”

Allianz Awards 2017 promises to be a magical night with special guest appearances as well as music performances by Efya, an icon of girl power, and M.anifest, one of the top emcees in Ghana, and others. The Ghana amputee football team, “The Black Challenge” will also be present as event ambassadors.

About the Award

The awards to be presented on the night will take the form of the Adinkra symbol Kwatekye Atiko, which represents bravery, valor, fearlessness and leadership.

This ancient symbol has four bars – said to symbolize arms and legs – pointing out in opposite directions and two spirals curling in towards the center. The bars remind us to reach out and grasp what can help us or protect ourselves by warding off what cannot.

The spirals encourage us to look within ourselves – mind and spirit – for the strength to endure, the wisdom to make the right choices and the patience to await things all in their proper time.

In this way Kwatekye Atiko reminds us not only to hope but also gather all the facts, learn all we can about what we are up against and then focus on what can be done.

About the Partners

OAfrica is a charity organisation that promotes family-based care for orphans and other vulnerable kids. OAfrica’s programs support separated children by building strong families to eliminate child abandonment and create safe, stable and loving families and communities.

All attendants to the Allianz Awards 2017 should know that tickets cost GH₵20 for regular and GH₵100 for VIP. All proceeds will be given to OAfrica in support of its future projects.
