But for the swift intervention of the Chief of Tsyiome -Sabadu near Vakpo and his elders, two officers of the Ghana Police Service would have been lynched.

Detective Corporal Vincent Adorvlo and a Community Police were investigating a reported threat on the lives of a local pastor and his congregants when the town folks rounded them up at the Chief’s Palace.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yIWDJggVXjYsDgzBwbpnPvi06d5lFFEX”]The town-folks, who according to eyewitnesses thought the police were arresting their chief, besieged the Palace with weapons and other sharp objects to ostensibly attack the officers.

Narrating the incident to Citi News, the eyewitness said the angry youth who manhandled the officers were chanting war songs and issuing death threats.

Gripped by fear, the Chief whisked the officers into his room while the community elders calmed the mob.

It took about three hours to restore calm and escort the investigators to their base.

Reports suggested that the town-folks have been up in arms against a church whose pastor they accused of certain misconducts.

The North Dayi District Commander of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Tawiah, who confirmed the incident to Citi News,  said the Detectives were at the Chief’s Palace to invite through the chief, the leader of the gang that was threatening the lives of the pastor and his church.

He said his outfit had commenced investigations into the matter to bring culprits to book.

The Member of Parliament for the Nabdam Constituency, Dr. Mark Nawaane, has called on the Upper East Regional Police Command to prosecute persons complicit in the lynching of a 67-year old woman, who was accused of being a witch at Yenboka Kenna, a town in Pelungu in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region.

The Bolgatanga Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances under which the widow was lynched, and has five suspects in its custody.

[contextly_sidebar id=”36PLVlFIHcrFAiWFlIoXOR40z9FHJTU0″]While police say investigations to unravel the mystery is ongoing,  five suspects are standing trial at the Bolgatanga Magistrate court for their alleged roles in the incident.

According to the Nabdam legislator, any undue influence on the Police will compromise justice for the deceased.

Speaking to Citi News after a visit to the family of late Yenboka Kenna , Dr. Nawaane intimated that, the Police should resist any form of external influence from the public in seeking justice for the deceased.

“My sincere condolences to the bereaved family and that this should be the last time this calamity should happen in Nabdam. I will categorically deny my involvement  in trying to influence the ongoing  investigations by the Police. This is a murder case and we wish the Police work independently without any external influence, like the MP and any other person or group of persons trying to influence the Police to carry out their investigations.”

Dr. Nawaane however appealed to the justice delivery institutions to expedite action quickly.

“We wish that the Police will expedite action to bring the perpetrators to book; but at the same time no innocent person should suffer and we should be very careful in trying to get her killers not to have other Nabdams’ who are innocent to suffer” he stated.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with the lynching of a 67-year-old woman accused of being a witch.

The deceased, Madam Yenboka Kenna, a widow, was killed at the Pelungu market on Monday, May 29, 2017.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6DQhlIALf4OUGtOxxrXXilYTXm9h9wwD”]The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Vincent Redeemer, told Citi News that the police cannot prove whether those arrested were directly involved in the lynching, but  they are currently assisting the police in investigation.

He said while conducting the investigations in the village where the incident happened, some young men came in to stop a witness from giving information to the police investigation, hence were picked up.

He said the police was hopeful they could help them identify those who carried out the murder.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tindongo, the community where the deceased hails from, Tindong-Raan Sapana, has said that his attempts to gather more information about the crime have proven futile.

He said although the Pelungu chief has denied knowledge of the incident, he has instructed his people not to take revenge over the murder of the woman.

Tindong-Raan Sapana, however said there is very little he could do to seek justice for the deceased, since the husband and family of the deceased have not formally informed him of the death, and what they want to be done in connection with the incident.

Family of lynched ‘witch’ blames Pelungu chief

The family of the woman who was lynched on Sunday, May 28, has partly blamed the Chief of Pelungu, where the woman was killed for the incident.

According to an elder of the family, Tibil Nyaabil, this murder would have been prevented if the chief of Pelungu, Naab Sierig Sore Sobil (IV) had accommodated her in his palace until the mob had dispersed.

The debate over what has become known as mob  justice, has been rekindled following the gruesome murder of a military officer, who was mistaken for an armed robber.

The security agencies have vowed to deal ruthlessly with perpetrators of such crimes to ensure that the canker is entirely eliminated.

The Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Emmanuel Agyarko, is of the view that the persons who lynched the late military officer, Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama, might have acted under the influence of alcohol or Indian hemp.

According to him, he cannot comprehend how a normal person would hit his fellow human being with a cement block with the intent of squeezing his life out of him.

Speaking on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, Mr. Agyarko further called for medical examination of the suspects arrested to ascertain whether substance abuse was at play.

[contextly_sidebar id=”XmLvvWOijfgUXkD5yVGel7LlThLqggf1″]“As a former Narcotics control officer…I will suggest that all these people who are picked up, maybe they should conduct some test on them. I’m beginning to think that there is so much substance abuse in this country. Alcohol is too cheap in this country. Wee is too common in this country. I think that we must begin to look into these things…I can’t see how me, a normal person who is not under the influence of anything will take a block and hit a man on his head,” the outspoken MP added.

Capt. Mahama was lynched and partly burnt by some residents of Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region after they mistook him for an armed robber.

The residents in a video which went viral on social media hit the officer with cement blocks, clubs and other wooden objects until he passed out.

The late military officer and his team from the 5th Infantry battalion, had been deployed to the area to fight illegal mining.

So far, about 22 people including a twelve year old have been arrested in connection with the murder.

The late officer’s burial has been set for June 9, 2017.

Joblessness partly to blame

Mr. Agyarko also believes that, a lot of the residents joined in the lynching of the Capt. Mahama because they are idle and have no jobs to do.

“This rallying of the mob couldn’t have happened so easily. You begin to wonder about what the people in the villages do. I begin to think that because of underemployment and nothing to do, people hang around and they become easily rallied. People are not occupied enough. This country has some major problem and crisis this government must tackle. Government must create a situation where people will be busy or be employed to make them too busy to engage in vigilantism,” he added.

The Member of Parliament for the Builsa South Constituency, Dr. Clement Apaak, has said the District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Upper Denkyira West District, Daniel Appianin, deserves to be sacked and not suspended.

Mr. Appianin was suspended by the President last Thursday and asked to hand over to the deputy Central Regional Minister, for making some comments considered derogatory following the lynching of the military officer in his district.

The DCE had accused the military officer and his colleagues who were deployed to fight illegal mining in the area, of protecting illegal miners.

The suspended DCE for Upper Denkyira West, Daniel Apiannin

[contextly_sidebar id=”BIj1f6hFAhu9ru0GmSJC5aXldrVyE3BG”]But speaking on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, Clement Apaak, who is a former Presidential staffer, charged the President to sack the DCE as a matter of urgency.

“The president himself has admitted that his comments were distasteful. Every Ghanaian who had heard him quite clearly had raised eyebrows and questions about his comments…I’m calling for the president to dismiss the DCE probably by the end of the day or within an hour; I think he will get a lot of accolades from the people of this country,” he added.

He argued that the DCE’s comments were reckless especially coming from someone who is supposed to be representing the president in the district.

“What really breaks my heart is the reckless comments made by the District Chief Executive. The DCE is actually the president of that district and he then seeks to make comments to the effect that the late Capt. Mahama was there protecting Chinese galamseyers. I just couldn’t believe this. I think that the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces has demonstrated weakness and indecisiveness in this case because there is no reason why this DCE should not have been fired.”

“If these are the types of people who are going to represent the president at the local level then God save this country. It’s simply unbelievable. Is he not aware of government policy; is he not aware of the fight against galamsey? Is he not the head of DISEC? Suddenly he had no clue or idea that the detachment were there to execute a national policy. So for me, I think that it is not too late, I think the DCE deserves the sack. There shouldn’t be any room for suspension because leadership has to be held accountable,” he added.

DCE vacates post
Meanwhile the embattled DCE, Daniel Appianin, has finally vacated his post and handed over to the Deputy Central Regional Minister.

The Deputy Local government Minister, O.B Amoah, confirmed this to Citi News on Friday.

A man accused of being a wizard escaped death on his farmland on Thursday at Duusi in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region.

The man, Kugre Moses aged 36, called on the police to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book.

He was allegedly accused by some parents of the area of being a wizard who tries to enchant their children in the area to produce money for him.

Mr. Kugre said he was on his farmland when about five parents of some children in the area confronted him and started beating him up. Mr. Kugre sustained head wounds and a fracture on his left leg.

It took the intervention of the Zuarungu Police to rescue him to the BolgatangaHospitall for medical care.

He revealed further to Citi News that this was not the first time he had been accused of wizardry.

“I was accused of this issue sometime back by this same people and was taken to the Duusi chief and the chief refereed us to a soothsayer but the soothsayer proved my  innocence.”

“I was at my farm when they came to take me back to the soothsayer again, but I told them I do not have money with me, they should take me home so that I will pick some money but they refused and started beating me.  The four parents  who attacked me are  Kapiou Batimtaba, Nagbila Boare, Gwane Batimtaba, Yin Boare, Dogpobil Batimtaba, so I want the police to arrest them and make them face  the law” Mr. Kugre narrated.

He is currently receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Chief inspector of the Zuarungu police station, Stephen Amewugah told Citi News that, one suspect, Noah Yelgaoh, aged about 35 years, and involved in the attempted lynching, has been arrested by police to assist investigations.

The Upper East Region is one of the areas known for the despicable act of what has become known as mob justice or instance justice.

Family of lynched ‘witch’ blames Pelungu chief

On Thursday, the family of a woman who was lynched over suspicions of witchcraft on Sunday, May 28, has partly blamed the Chief of Pelungu, where the woman was killed for the incident.

The deceased, Yenboka Kenna, aged 67, was killed at the Pelungu market in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region by an angry mob that accused her of bewitching people in the area.

Soldier ‘mistakenly’ lynched and burnt at Diaso

The news of this attempted lynching comes at a time when the subject of citizens taking the law into their own hands on suspected wrongdoers, has come up for discussion.

The debate has been rekindled by the gruesome murder of a soldier, Captain Maxwell Mahama, who was lynched by community members at Denkyira-Obuasi in the Central Region, on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

It later emerged that the soldier was wrongly accused because he was in the town with his colleagues on an anti-galamsey or illegal mining operation.

Former President Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings has called for calm and restraint as the security agencies investigate the unfortunate lynching of a serving military officer at Denkyira-Obuasi.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the former President expressed his sincere condolences to the wife, family and the unit of the late Captain Maxwell Mahama for their unfortunate loss.

[contextly_sidebar id=”yag0Qhm3PXxBEhyZV2kPiWzySLijFUQQ”]“Your loss is a loss to the whole country. Your husband, son and brother lost his life serving his country.”

Flt Lt Rawlings added that, “Taking the law into our hands in the manner the perpetrators of the act did was an act of cruelty. However, I implore the affected institution to remain calm as the security agencies investigate the matter.

The former President added his voice to calls by many concerned Ghanaians over the lack of speedy investigation and prosecution of persons who perpetrate serious crimes such as armed robbery and murder.

“When the law does not seem to be giving people justice, such acts of cruelty resulting in the unfortunate loss of innocent life, is the end result. I call on the security agencies and the law courts to inspire confidence in the populace by acting swiftly and effectively when crimes are committed in our communities.

“The recent acts of violence in Somanya and Kumasi cannot be taken in isolation. They go to expose a weakness in the general response to crime,” former President Rawlings said.
