Former first lady, Lordina Mahama has suggested that taking advantage of the existing educational opportunities and the technological age can help achieve the global target of achieving a 50-50 ratio of men to women in the workforce by 2030.

In a statement to mark the day, she said, skills training must also be adopted to address the issue of gender parity.

“On the occasion of International Women’s Day, I salute all women of Ghana and congratulate you for your hard work, dedication, commitment and often unrecognized but hugely significant contribution towards the development of Ghana.  Today is our Day. It belongs to the sister who spun the cotton yarn, the woman who tilled the soil, the one who defied the scorching sun to earn a living for her family, and that woman who nursed the sick baby back to health,” she said.

The statement added that, “I applaud the achiever who has left that sterling mark of excellence and professionalism in our hospitals, our classrooms, at the pulpit, in the mosque, parliament, our courts, security services, and all other places of work.  I pay homage to that multi-tasker who aside from looking after our homes and our young ones, diligently work in our markets, on our farms and at the beaches in order to cater for the needs of the family.”

She commended women for their roles in ensuring socio-economic and political development in various societies adding that the world must recognize women as a competent partner with their male counterparts.

“The world owes it a duty to offer the woman all the support she needs to fully exploit her potential and creativity.”

“Despite our changing roles and increased number of women who enter the Ghanaian workforce each year, we are still able to multitask and care for the family. I am excited, that the Supreme Court of Ghana has legally recognized our unpaid work. This is an important victory.”

“In line with the theme of ‘women in a changing world of work’, I acknowledge efforts by women who work for a living in Ghana. Most of our working women are parents who work in the informal sector and many work under dire conditions, yet are striving and dedicated to make a world of difference in the lives of their families.”

She also expressed optimism in the prospects of the Ghanaian woman and the ability of society to eliminate regressive cultural practices.

“The future is bright; we will work hard together to eliminate cultural practices like child marriage, and gender based violence, so that we create the right environment and opportunities for women to do decent work in Ghana.”

Former first lady Lordina Mahama, has risen to the defence of her husband, the former President, John Dramani Mahama, hitting back at persons accusing him of unlawfully trying to keep state property after his term of office expired.

She says the plot to embarrass her husband will fall flat.

Lordina Mahama, who has in recent public statements, especially on social media made a strong case for the former President, defended him, and described him as a great leader who genuinely cares about the country.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LLQBkLB7BZMg4F0Xlwr0vfayYlS1xlgL”]In post via her Twitter account on Wednesday, the former first lady described John Mahama as a “man of integrity and principle.”

“This too shall pass.Their efforts shall fall flat because you are a man of integrity & principle. They shall be put to shame by #MahamaLegacy,” she tweeted.

The former President has come under intense criticism from a section of Ghanaians over his request to the new government to keep his current place of abode as his retirement home.

Mahama’s request is contrary to the approved recommendations set by the Prof. Dora Francisca Edu- Buandoh committee on Emoluments and Conditions of Service for Article 71 office holders, which only prescribes the payment of 40% of the retiring President’s salary to him to cater for his rent.

‘Mahama withdraws request for state bungalow’

John Mahama in a subsequent letter addressed to President Akufo-Addo and copied to the Asantehene on Wednesday [January 11], withdrew his requests to keep the bungalow as well as use of another property as his office.

In the letter, he explained that his decision to withdraw the request was to avoid hurting the cordial relationship that has existed between himself and the new government led by Nana Akufo-Addo over the transition period.

‘Mahama’s request unlawful’

Ahead of Mahama’s withdrawal, a Legal Practitioner, Yaw Oppong, in a Citi News interview, described the request by Mahama as unlawful.

Mr. Oppong said the former President’s request clearly contravened the Presidential Transition Act.

The first lady, Lordina Mahama says President John Dramani Mahama’s service to Ghana will be etched in the country’s history and the hearts of Ghanaians.

She has also congratulated president-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo on his victory in the recently held general elections.

Lordina Mahama, in a Facebook post hours after the official declaration of election results by the Electoral Commission in Accra expressed excitement at the opportunity to have served as Ghana’s first lady.

She further congratulated President Mahama for his service to the country through the four-year period and was hopeful President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo will serve Ghana “selflessly and whoke-heartedly.”

John Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) failed to secure a second four-year-term mandate after losing to the opposition New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo in a general election many have described as being credible and transparent.

Mahama won about 44.40% of total votes cast while Akufo-Addo won 53.85%.

‘I’ll ensure smooth transition’

In a public address ahead of the official declaration of the results, John Mahama said “I will like to assure the people of Ghana of my commitment to the sustenance of our country’s democracy and we will work to ensure a smooth transition of our incoming administration. I remain committed to the unity and stability of our great nation.”

“It has been without a doubt, one of the most tremendous privileges of my life to serve this great nation as President and to work on behalf of all Ghanaians. I will leave it to history to be the judge of my time and contributions while in that highest office,” he added.

‘I’ll be President for all’

Meanwhile, the President-elect, Nana Akufo-Addo has assured Ghanaians that he will be a President for all Ghanaians and will work for the common good of the country.

In his first public speech after being declared winner of the polls, he pledged to fulfil all promises he made while on the campaign trail.

Ghana’s first lady, Lordina Mahama has said President Mahama is already implementing promises made by President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump in Ghana.

Donald Trump had assured Americans of building infrastructure including roads, schools, hospitals, airports, highways, bridges, and creating jobs to make America great again.

[contextly_sidebar id=”JtTRunLDsQkpqdBxo59XJ3HIhgzJAHjp”]But in a congratulatory message to Donald Trump via her Facebook page on Wednesday, Lordina Mahama said the President is “already delivering what he [Donald Trump] is promising .”

“It seems he [Donald Trump] has been listening to, or watching His Excellency John Mahama of Ghana,” she added.

The American businessman, Donald Trump of the Republican Party beat his closest contender, Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, in what many described as a tough election with an unexpected result.

‘I am doing what Hillary Clinton is promising Americans’

Meanwhile, President John Mahama at a rally in Asamankese in the Eastern Region earlier this month said his government has already invested heavily in socioeconomic infrastructure , a promise he claimed the Democratic presidential candidate in the US, Hillary Clinton had made.

According to the President, the magnitude of infrastructure development Ghana has witnessed under his reign puts the country on a firm foundation for livelihood empowerment in his second term.

“If you look at Hilary Clinton’s economic plan, she’s promising to invest 250 billion dollars in economic and social infrastructure. She is now coming to invest this amount when elected. Ghana has already started investing in socioeconomic infrastructure already. This is because socioeconomic infrastructure is the foundation of every development.”

‘Mahama congratulates Donald Trump’

President Mahama earlier this morning [Wednesday, November 9] congratulated the president-elect Donald Trump in a tweet, hours after his victory was announced.
