US singer Beyonce is to take a lead role in the remake of Disney’s The Lion King.

She will voice the role of lioness Nala, next to lead character Simba, played by Donald Glover.

Beyonce used Facebook to confirm her long-rumoured involvement in the project.

Her other co-stars include Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar and Seth Rogan as Pumba the warthog. James Earl Jones will play Mufasa, as he did in the 1994 original.

British comedian John Oliver has also been cast as Zazu, the hornbill voiced by Rowan Atkinson in the first film.

The film is being conceived along the same lines as another recent remake, The Jungle Book, which also saw big names voicing photorealistic computer-generated animals.

It is scheduled for release in July 2019 and will be directed by Jon Favreau, who also led The Jungle Book reboot.

In a statement, he said: “It is a director’s dream to assemble a talented team like this to bring this classic story to life.”

The Canadian High Commission has refuted claims that it deliberately denied members of the supporter various union groups visas  for the upcoming Women’s U-20 world Cup in Canada.

Members of some Ghanaian supporters union groups have alleged that they were deliberately refused visas by the commission.

The groups subsequently threatened to stage a demonstration on the premises of the Canadian embassy if their needs were not adhered to.

However, in a rebuttal on Accra based TV station, Metro TV, the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Christopher Tony, insisted the allegations were unfortunate and that the commission did not, in any way, discriminate against the Ghanaian fans.

According to him, the supporters were refused visas because they did not meet the visa requirements.

He further added that, all visa applications are given fair assessment, hence the allegations that a particular group of persons was targeted are baseless.

Meanwhile, the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup kicks-off on Tuesday in Canada, with the Black Princess facing  host nation Canada in the opener at the Toronto International Stadium at exactly midnight GMT.
