Jack Butland’s howler cost Stoke City all three points against Leicester City.

The Potters looked set to climb out of the bottom three ahead of the Saturday afternoon Premier League fixtures after Xherdan Shaqiri’s lovely first-half finish put them ahead.

However, Butland gifted Leicester an equaliser with an own goal midway through the second half when he misjudged a Marc Albrighton cross and converted the ball into his own net.

Leicester had late opportunities to take all three points and hit posts twice but the early kick-off at the King Power Stadium finished all square.

The Foxes made a high-tempo start and put Stoke under some early pressure with a series of corners.

The last presented Matty James with a shooting opportunity but he was unable to keep his effort down.

Stoke were also full of energy early on as they pressed high up the pitch and when Badou Ndiaye won possession on the edge of the Leicester penalty area after 12 minutes, his curling effort brought a decent save from Kasper Schmeichel.

The game became a little scrappy as the first half wore on, as both teams struggled to keep the ball, and such an instance allowed Stoke to strike two minutes before half-time.

Wilfred Ndidi tried too hard to keep the ball in play on the touchline midway inside his own half and Joe Allen nipped in and got a pass away infield to Shaqiri, who was in lots of space.

The Stoke forward advanced towards the penalty area before beating Schmeichel with a low curling effort from 22 yards out.

It was a blow for Leicester so close to the break but the hosts responded well at the beginning of the second half, putting Stoke under pressure once more.

But, just like at the start of the match, the visitors dealt with the danger.

Stoke looked comfortable and Shaqiri almost embarrassed Schmeichel with a second goal just before the hour mark.

Schmeichel took a free-kick from a wide position but his distribution was uncharacteristically poor and the ball went straight to Allen, who passed it to Shaqiri.

With the goalkeeper well out of position, Shaqiri shot from 40 yards out but his effort curled agonisingly wide as Schmeichel scrambled back.

The Dane survived his error but at the other end Butland was not so fortunate in the 70th minute.

When Albrighton drilled in a cross from the right-hand side of the penalty area, it looked like a routine take into the midriff for Butland. However, the ball struck his body and went into the net.

He went some way to making amends shortly afterwards with a superb save to deny Riyad Mahrez. When play developed from the rebound, Harry Maguire struck a post with a fierce shot.

A last-ditch tackle from Charlie Adam thwarted Mahrez once more and from the resulting corner James’ header hit the same post Maguire had struck shortly before.

In the end Stoke were holding on but Lambert may feel his team did enough to earn a vital win.

Leicester City have asked about Stoke City target Daniel Opare.

The Ghana international full-back is available for around £3million as he is out of contract with his club Augsburg in the summer.

Stoke City were considered frontrunners for the 27-year-old but the situation surrounding Mark Hughes’s future as manager will influence his decision.

Leicester have been pursuing Andre Almeida at Benfica though he is valued at £9million and Opare can play in both full-back positions.

Leicester beat Huddersfield 3-0 on Monday and are eighth in the league table.

West Ham, Swansea and Wolves have also asked about Opare who has 16 caps for his country.

Manchester United will spend Christmas an eye-watering 13 points behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City after Harry Maguire secured Leicester a draw with a last-gasp goal.

Already reeling from their shock midweek Carabao Cup exit at Bristol City, the need for Jose Mourinho’s men to get back to winning ways was heightened by Pep Guardiola’s team racking up a 17th successive league win earlier in the day.

Juan Mata’s brace looked to have done just that as United responded to Jamie Vardy’s 50th Premier League goal, only for Maguire to strike at the death as ten-man Leicester secured a 2-2 draw.

It was a remarkable end to an entertaining encounter that United started brightly, only for the Foxes to catch them cold on the break as Vardy became the club’s first player to reach a half-century of Premier League goals.

Mata coolly drew United level and put them ahead with a second-half free-kick that the visitors threatened to add to, with Jesse Lingard hitting the post and Marcus Rashford seeing a penalty claim ignored as substitute Daniel Amartey saw red for two bookings in quick succession.

But United would receive a gut punch at the start of a run of four matches in ten days as Maguire ghosted in to snatch a point.

Chris Smalling was limping as the Foxes levelled proceedings at the end of a night that started with the United defender powering a header just over.

Kasper Schmeichel did well to tip over a deflected Lingard attempt and then denied stand-in captain Paul Pogba, with Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial also attempting to find the opener.

Leicester were creating little early on and pinning their hopes on catching United on the break.

It was a simple plan that bore fruit in the 27th minute as Wilfred Ndidi turned defence into attack by aiming a superb – if hopeful – volleyed effort up the field to send Riyad Mahrez scampering.

The Algerian had theb Foxes’ first attempt on target shortly before and this time refrained from shooting, holding up the ball smartly to shake off Smalling’s attention and playing in the overlapping Vardy to fire home.

Phil Jones was out of position for the England striker’s milestone goal, which was swiftly followed by the King Power Stadium faithful chanting, “Just like Leicester, your city is blue”.

United were struggling to break down City, but slick interplay and an intelligent finish saw them level five minutes before half-time as Mata went for placement rather than power to beat Schmeichel via a slight deflection.

More sloppy defending almost undid that as Maguire met a clipped free-kick unmarked, only for a heavy touch to save United’s blushes.

Victor Lindelof threw himself in front of a Christian Fuchs attempt and Martial wasted a fine chance at the other end, before Mata bent home a free-kick that Schmeichel could have done better with.

Lingard rubbed his face in frustration after failing to wrap things up after rounding the Leicester goalkeeper and hitting the post.

The Foxes’ night would get worse before it got better. Amartey’s clumsy challenge on Rashford shortly after his first yellow card earned him a second booking – just over 16 minutes after coming on.

Rashford was soon at the heart of things again after going down in the box as Schmeichel raced out, but referee Jonathan Moss was having none of it. He also ignored Maguire’s appeals as the clock wound down.

The home support were furious with the officials, but anger turned to elation at the death.

With Smalling limping back into position, Maguire slipped behind him and Ashley Young to strike the leveller.

Crystal Palace climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone as they outplayed Claude Puel’s resurgent Leicester to seal a rare away win.

Christian Benteke cost Palace victory when he missed an injury-time penalty he was not supposed to take last weekend, but the striker redeemed himself with a first-half header from Andros Townsend’s cross – his first goal of the campaign.

Palace had failed to score in their past 10 league away games, but Roy Hodgson’s organised and adventurous team added a second before the break when Benteke’s strong run and pass set up Wilfried Zaha for a brilliant individual finish.

Leicester only tested goalkeeper Julian Speroni when they rallied in the second half – the Argentine reacting superbly to reach Riyad Mahrez’s angled low drive with a strong palm.

And any potential comeback was hamstrung when Wilfred Ndidi was sent off on his birthday less than a minute after Vicente Iborra’s header was correctly disallowed for a foul.

Ndidi – who turns 21 today – was shown a second yellow card for simulation in the penalty box with just under half an hour to play.

Palace had a much more legitimate penalty shout when Benteke was crumpled in the area by Marc Albrighton’s sliding tackle from behind, but the referee waved away appeals for a chance to add extra gloss on an impressive away performance.

Bakary Sako eventually provided it – tucking away Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s pass across goal to round off a 94th-minute counter-attack.

The Foxes, who so impressively dismantled Puel’s former club Southampton in midweek, remain eighth in the table, while Palace rise four places to 14th – though the teams below them are yet to play this weekend.

Manager David Moyes felt West Ham’s crowd played a big part as the Hammers came from behind to earn a point against Leicester in his first home game in charge.

Marc Albrighton fired the Foxes ahead after Angelo Ogbonna failed to deal with Jamie Vardy’s low cross.

Vardy went close to doubling the lead with a curling attempt before Kouyate got on the end of Manuel Lanzini’s corner.

West Ham, roared on by the home fans, were the better side after the interval but could not force a second goal.

They remain in the relegation zone but are now level on points with 17th-placed West Brom, while Leicester move above Newcastle United into 11th.

‘A tough place to come with a tough crowd’

Moyes described the point as “a start” and said of the Hammers fans: “They got right behind the players and the players gave them something back.”

He added: “The fans were fantastic, after all the negatives we heard, it was the opposite.

“When you come to play West Ham over the years, it has been a tough place to come with a tough crowd and they did that tonight.”

Leicester have taken five points in Claude Puel’s first four league games in charge yet the Foxes boss believes it should be more.

“The only disappointment is that we didn’t win,” said the Frenchman.

“We play well with the ball on the floor, press our opponents well and create chances to score. Now we must start to be more clinical.

“It’s disappointing because we had a lot of opportunities in the first half and we should have killed the game.”

Hammers respond well to going behind

This was a spirited performance from the Hammers which will give Moyes hope of steering the struggling club out of the bottom three.

In the 2-0 defeat at Watford in his first game in charge, West Ham’s heads dropped after conceding in the 11th minute.

Yet there was a determination about the hosts after the Premier League’s worst defence conceded for the 26th time in the league this season.

Winston Reid’s failure to close Jamie Vardy down allowed the England striker to cross. Angelo Ogbonna should have cleared yet lost his footing to allow Albrighton to slide home.

Kouyate headed the first Hammers goal of the Moyes reign from Lanzini’s corner, which lifted the atmosphere inside London Stadium.

West Ham fans spent the second half urging their team forward, substitute Andre Ayew going closest to a second with an overhead kick in stoppage time.

Ayew’s eventful cameo

Although he went close to scoring the winner in the dying moments, Ayew was involved in two controversial incidents after replacing the impressive Marko Arnautovic.

The former Swansea winger appeared to dive to try and win his side a penalty when challenged by Harry Maguire on the edge of the Leicester penalty area.

Referee Martin Atkinson waved play on, although Ayew was booked moments later after a late challenge on Demarai Gray, who was also cautioned for reacting and shoving his opponent.

Leicester City have appointed ex-Southampton boss Claude Puel as their new manager on a three-year deal.

Puel becomes the Foxes’ third manager this year, replacing Craig Shakespeare who succeeded Premier League title winner Claudio Ranieri in February.

Puel, 56, led the Saints to eighth in his first season in charge, as well as reaching the EFL Cup final, but the Frenchman was sacked in June.

Michael Appleton will remain as Leicester’s assistant manager.

Appleton had taken caretaker charge after Shakespeare was sacked just four months after he signed a three-year deal to take the job on a permanent basis.

Leicester City vice-chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha said Puel was “a perfect fit”.

“Upon meeting Claude, his attention to detail, knowledge of our squad, understanding of our potential and his vision to help us realise it were extremely impressive,” he added.

“He quickly emerged as the outstanding candidate and I am delighted we will have the opportunity to reinforce our long-term vision, aided significantly by his expertise.”

Puel takes over a Foxes side 14th in the Premier League table with two wins from nine games.

The former Monaco boss, who has also had spells at Lille and Lyon, spent four years as manager of Nice before replacing Ronald Koeman at Southampton.

He said it was “a great privilege” to take over at Leicester, adding that the club’s “values and ambitions are closely aligned to my own”.

“The opportunity to help the club build on its remarkable recent achievements is a truly exciting one and I’m looking forward to working with the owners, players, staff and supporters to deliver further lasting success.”

Despite losing 16 games last season, Puel led Southampton to an eighth-placed finish in the Premier League. Their 3-2 defeat by Manchester United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley was their first major final since 2003.

But he was dismissed after managing just one win from the final eight league matches of the season, with his side scoring just once in their last six games.

Fifa has rejected Leicester City’s application to register midfielder Adrien Silva after the club missed the deadline by 14 seconds.

The Foxes agreed to sign the midfielder from Sporting Lisbon for £22m near the close of the summer transfer window on 31 August.

Silva’s registration was not completed in time with football’s governing body meaning the deal was not finalised.

Leicester are in the process of trying to appeal against the decision.

The Football Association has been in touch with Fifa and will look to help Leicester with its case.

A Leicester spokesman said: “We are working with Adrien and Sporting Clube de Portugal to overcome some issues relating to the player’s registration and exploring all options to find a resolution.”

Leicester still hope to complete the deal but Sporting President Bruno de Carvalho added: “The transfer of Adrien is already completed. Hopefully Leicester find a solution for him.”

France-born Silva, 28, is a product of Sporting’s academy and has had loan spells at Maccabi Haifa and Academica.

He has earned 20 international caps and played during Portugal’s run to winning Euro 2016.

Leicester also sold midfielder Danny Drinkwater to Chelsea for £35m in the final moments of the transfer window.

‘A deadline is a deadline’

Registering a player is not just about sending a single file, it’s a group of forms which need emailing/faxing/posting over to Fifa by the 23:00 BST transfer deadline.

In this case, Leicester had successfully sent through most of the paperwork on time, bar one form, and because that form arrived late the whole process was rejected. It reminds me of doing my GCSEs and being told that however good my paper was, it would score a zero if I forgot to put my name on.

You have to send a passport, a copy of the contract and several other items before the deal is done. Fourteen seconds might seem like a ludicrous amount of time to squabble over but a deadline is a deadline and if Fifa row back on this now then imagine other clubs saying ‘hold on three years ago we missed it by 25 seconds’, it would never end.

The only way Fifa could still allow this to happen while standing by their deadline is to ratify Adrien Silva’s registration and say that because the documents were on their way (in the post, in the cloud, whatever) that it meets their criteria.

Fifa’s statement sounds pretty resolute though, they have listened to the Football Association’s case on Leicester’s behalf and simply palmed them off by referring them to the regulations.

After Arsenal suffered a 3-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, there were five 3pm kick offs in the Premier League, and here’s how they concluded…

Crystal Palace 1-0 Watford

With this a contest that neither side could afford to lose, it was a predictably dull opening 45 minutes at Selhurst Park. Watford’s almost complete lack of threat in the final third lifted the confidence of the Eagles, who slowly grew into the game.

After the break Palace were in the ascendancy and, 68 minutes in, Sam Alladryce’s relegation-threatened side had the lead, through an own goal by Troy Deeney.

Watford failed to hit back, increasing the pressure on manager Walter Mazzarri, while Palace distanced themselves further from the bottom three.

Everton 4-0 Hull City

Everton marched to the dressing room with a deserved 1-0 win at the break, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin completing a sublime attacking move in the ninth minute. The Toffees dominated proceedings for the opening period and Ronald Koeman will have been demanding more goals from his team in the second period.

Having failed to take advantage of their control, though, Hull grew in confidence and began to threaten the Everton goal. But just as the visitors were on top, Tom Huddlestone was shown a straight red for a challenge on Idrissa Gueye.

It was only a matter of time before Everton made the most of the midfielder’s dismissal, then, and just five minutes later substitute Enner Valencia doubled the host’s lead. Romelu Lukaku, who didn’t feel the wrath of the Goodison Park faithful despite his comments about the direction of the club earlier in the week, finished the contest in added time with two goals to seal a 4-0 win.

Stoke City 1-2 Chelsea

Willian’s free-kick in the 13th minute looked to have set Chelsea on their way to another straightforward victory, before Jonathan Walters equalised from the penalty spot having been adjudged to have been illegally brought down by Gary Cahill, making it 1-1 at the break.

The Blues were missing the influence of Eden Hazard in the final third and struggling to break down a stubborn Potters defence. Marcos Alonso almost restored his team’s lead, though, hitting the crossbar with a delicious free-kick mid-way through the second half.

This looked to be Chelsea’s best chance of the second period, before Cahill stunned the home support with an 87th-minute winner from close range.

Sunderland 0-0 Burnley

Burnley dominated the first half at the Stadium of Light, but Sean Dyche will have been left frustrated at watching his side waste their possession. Ashley Barnes missed an excellent opportunity to draw first blood and the Black Cats, despite seeming lacking in belief, were still therefore very much in the game at half-time.

It was a contest without quality in the final third, as both sides battled for an opening goal but failed to test respective goalkeepers, Jordan Pickford and Tom Heaton. A point was to be no more than either deserved.

West Ham 2-3 Leicester City

A pulsating start at the London Stadium saw Riyad Mahrez and Robert Huth give the Foxes a two-goal lead in the opening seven minutes. Manuel Lanzini cut the deficit with a sublime free-kick 20 minutes in, before a close-range finish from Jamie Vardy gave Leicester a 3-1 lead at the break.

The game seemed far from over and soon after the hour mark, Andy Carroll nodded the ball into danger from a corner and André Ayew reacted first to head past Kasper Schmeichel to really suggest a comeback was on.

This wasn’t to be the case, however. Schmeichel denied an equalising strike for West Ham in added time with a spectacular save to see that Leicester’s winning run under Craig Shakespeare continued.
