Nii Nortey Dua, who also served as a former Deputy Minister of Sports during the Mills administration, reportedly died on Thursday after a protracted ailment.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency Chairman for Ledzokuku, Patrick Noagbedzi, confirmed the incident to Citi News.

“Nii Nortey Dua is dead…it happened at the 37 Military hospital. As the constituency executive committee this is a bad news we’ve heard.”

Mr. Noagbedzi said they will soon visit the late former MP’s family to commiserate with them.

The late Dua was Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku Constituency in the Greater Accra Region between 2008 and 2012.

Ahead of the 2012 general election, he was beaten in the party’s primaries by former Miss Ghana winner Benita Sena Okity-Duah.

He attempted a comeback prior to the 2016 general election, but lost again to Okity-Duah in the NDC’s parliamentary primaries.

According to him, such issues have been a source of worry for many in the constituency hence his decision to inject the cash into creating jobs in the area.

“With the unemployment issue, the one district one factory and one million dollar per constituency policy together with other initiatives will be used to curb the situation. We will use part of the one million dollar fund to solve the drainage system here,” he added.

Dr. Boye who unseated Benita Sena Okity-Duah in the 2012 general elections met with his constituents on Monday to listen to their problems.

Speaking to Citi News after the meeting Dr. Boye stated that he won’t disappoint them.

“The constituents must know that I am with them and that I didn’t fight for power for selfish gains. Fortunately they raised a lot of issues when I met them such as the problem of landing beaches, sanitation and unemployment. These are genuine concern I will take critical look at.” The MP added that he had put measures in place to address the issues raised.

“We have started finding solutions to some of the problems. For instance with the issue of sanitation, I joined the constituents to observe the national sanitation day which is the first Saturday in every month and this is to let them know I have not come to impose a solution rather to make them understand that we need to clean our environment ourselves and not expect an outsider to do it for us.”

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye who was also present at the meeting said government is putting in place measures to ensure that issues pertaining to the fishing industry are solved.

Okoe Boye said her inefficiency has given the people of the area no choice except to vote for him on the ticket of the NPP to promote development in the area.

“We have a member of parliament who is not visible, and the leadership she is providing is very poor so I think most of our people are poised for change, not just empty change, but positive change and that reflects in my candidature,” said.

“We have very huge problems in the constituency, we have issues with sanitation, we have issues with education and the literacy levels of our students are very poor, and we also have issues with jobs, and in all these you don’t see any coherent or well-spelt out leadership because people are interested to help but what we need is leadership to collate their energies and that is what I am going to provide,” he added.

He said Okity-Duah has failed to lobby for developmental projects from the central government for the constituents.

He lamented that with crime rates soaring and several complaints from fisherfolks in the area for a landing site, not much has been seen from the current MP.

Dr. Okoe Boye said the situation demands that constituents vote massively for him to address all their challenges since he has an impressive track record in leadership.

“I have shown the leadership, being a physician, I have shown the way when it comes to health, trying to give health access and help to those who cannot afford. I have done a lot of outreaches, when it comes to sanitation, I have helped to provide facilities that will help to take care of the waste for instance at the beach,” he noted.

‘The MP must ensure development’

The NPP candidate argued that, Members of Parliament must be held responsible for bringing development to their constituents and attempts to hold district officers solely responsible for developments is “a cheap way of running away from responsibility”.

The Ledzokuku parliamentary seat has since 2008, been held by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The party’s Nii Nortey Dua occupied the seat from 2008 to 2012.

Benita Sena Okity-Duah, the incumbent MP is seeking re-election to serve for another four years.
