“It only serves as a signal to work hard. Now I know I have to fight opponents from within and outside,” he noted in an interview with Citi News.

A former parliamentary aspirant, Stephen Stanley Quaye who was defeated by Oko Boye in the party’s primaries in June pledged his unflinching support for the candidate but shocked party officials when he filed his nominations at the Electoral Commission (EC) as an independent candidate for this year’s parliamentary elections.

Stephen Stanley Quaye was subsequently expelled by the party for his action, casting doubt on the chances of the NPP in the Ledzokuku constituency in the upcoming polls.

But, the Parliamentary candidate said he is certain of victory without Stanley Quaye’s involvement.

“Am not threatened at all. I will do everything humanly possible for us to win the seat and I think the good people of my constituency, they also appreciate the fact that for a candidate list Stephen Quaye who gives his word that he is going to support Dr Oko Boye only to turn around in the few months and say he is on his own gives him some credibility issues.

“If they will look at his credibility and the fact that he was on our ship and jumped out, I think they will realize that he is not a serious candidate going into the elections.”

‘Attempts to get him back proved futile’

The Constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), revealed that all efforts to reach out to the independent candidate proved futile.

He told Citi News, “As a party, we reached out to him many times, we called him into meetings with the executives, council of elders with senior members of the party. We’ve reached out to him using the highest level of the party but he is recalcitrant and determined to go on his own. At that point, there was nothing we could do but to expel him.”

He also expressed doubt his absence will affect the party’s chances in the constituency.

“I don’t think his departure will affect us significantly, this election is not going to be won on personality but the party. The hunger for change is so strong that we will not let Stephen Quaye stand in our way,” he said.
