The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to 19 wards of martyrs of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The programme, in its third year, is one of the initiatives that the Lebanese community is running to help promote education in Ghana.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Lebanese ambassador to Ghana, Ali H. Halabi, acknowledged the contribution of Ghanaian soldiers in peacekeeping efforts across the world.

“…for the Lebanese community, the contributions of Ghana’s Armed Forces to domestic and world security is an emotional affair. We fondly recall the efforts of Ghana’s peacekeeping mission to Lebanon and the sacrifices made there. They are the symbols of the decades of strong and enduring bonds between the peoples of Ghana and Lebanon. Today, we acknowledge that, it is the selfless contributions of these men and women of the Armed Forces that have established a solid security architecture under which different people in this great nation could live together peacefully…,” he stated.

“…By this action, we hope to contribute to the future of these children who are spread across all the levels of Ghana’s education system.”

This is the third year that the Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to the dependents of matyrs.

Since the 2012/2013 academic year, the Lebanese community has been giving scholarships to these wards, along with some brilliant undergraduate students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, law students from the University of Ghana and the Kwame University of Science and Technology, as well as some students of the Ghana School of Law (Makola) and Masters students of the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to eight entrants of the Ghana School of Law.

This is a part of a scholarship programme that is being run by the community to promote Ghana’s development agenda through investments in the nation’s human resource base.

At a ceremony to present the scholarships, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Ali Halabi, stressed the vital role of the Ghana School of Law in ensuring the realization of the rule of law, stating that, “the provision of quality legal education and the attainment of this favourable rule of law in society, are not mutually exclusive. It is therefore important to train visionary lawyers who would be key actors in achieving this societal growth.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”Sim7pJBCEEQBuBh8USutyzhcldSghsC7″]A representative of the beneficiaries, Afia Poku, thanked the Lebanese community for their benevolence, noting that, through this award, they have “showcased their adherence to upholding the rule of law in Ghana as they have recognized that, the law is the fiber that holds our society together and heals societal rifts.”

Professor Kofi Quashigah, Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, commended the Lebanese community in Ghana for investing in Ghana’s rule of law through the scheme.

He reflected on the Lebanese community’s assistance to the faculty for the past five years, which included a scholarship to undergraduate students pursuing LLB.

The Scholarship

For five years, the Lebanese community in Ghana has had in place a scholarship scheme for undergraduate law students from the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and Communications students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism.

Postgraduate students from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and the Ghana School of Law have also benefited from this scheme.

The Lebanese Community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to thirteen law students at the University of Ghana.

The scholarship scheme forms part of the community’s efforts to contribute to the strengthening of the rule of law in the country, and has been going on since the 2013/2014 academic year.

In his address at the ceremony to award the scholarships, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Ali H. Halabi, pointed out the commitment of the people of Lebanon in supporting Ghana in its pursuit to achieve sustainable socio-economic development.

“What we are witnessing at this moment is a reflection of the community’s continuous commitment to the production of a strong human resource base of this nation through education,” he said.

“The Lebanese community in Ghana recognizes the role of a strong educated human resource base, as a driver of national development.”

On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, called for a stronger and more sustainable public-private partnership, especially in the education sector.

“Instead of depending on government for everything that we need, we must develop a sustainable system that can free us of our financial burdens. The fact that the Lebanese community has seen this shows that they are throwing the challenge to us as a nation, and we ought to accept it.”

“We would continue to do our best and strive to achieve academic excellence. We know that the Ambassador’s objective is to see us at the top and by the grace of God, we will get there,” one of the beneficiaries, Kenneth Appiah, said in his acceptance speech.

This is in addition to a scheme that supports some students who are pursuing their degree programmes at the Ghana Institute of Journalism and the Law Schools at the University of Ghana and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Speaking at the ceremony to present the scholarship award to the 15 Ghana School of Law students, the Lebanese ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Ali Halabi, said that the community made this move because of how important rule of law is to the Ghanaian society.

“The need for the continuity of a favourable state of law in Ghana is at the heart of the Lebanese Community. I have realised that legal education and the attainment of this favourable rule of law system are not mutually exclusive,” he said.

“This is going to be a new scholarship scheme that will include providing support to selected students undergoing the professional training at the Ghana School of Law and those undertaking the Masters’ Programme at the Ghana Institute of Journalism.”

The Dean for the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology also noted, “Every nation needs lawyers to craft laws to ensure stability and fight against the threat of terrorism. A solid legal environment will attract investors. Scholarship will help students acquire quality education to contribute to the legal and facilitate development.”

The Lebanese Community in Ghana started the scholarship scheme in 2013 when it awarded scholarships to 7 communication students in the Ghana Institute of Journalism and 15 law students from KNUST and the University of Ghana.

A prisoner gouged out his eyes in protest at the sweltering conditions inside his cell, it was revealed today.

The unnamed man inflicted the horrifying injuries on himself at HMP Nottingham on Monday evening as temperatures reached about 25C.

An ambulance then took the man, believed to be just days from his release date, to the Queen’s Medical Centre hospital in Nottingham.

On Wednesday morning, the hospital would not confirm the inmate’s condition.

Prison bosses say they have now launched an investigation.

A number of inmates were thought to be protesting at conditions across the jail when the shocking incident took place.

A source inside the jail said: ‘Somebody cut their eyes out of their face. He was protesting. The heat is just so high. Prisoners simply can’t deal with it.

‘They need to let some air in the room. It’s only going to get worse.’

East Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed it was called to the scene at 6.43pm to treat a male patient and that a prison nurse was already helping the man.

Police also confirmed they were called to the jail at 8pm the same evening to a report of an injured man and, following inquiries, ‘it was established that no crime had taken place’.

A statement from the Ministry of Justice said: ‘A prisoner at HMP Nottingham was taken to hospital following an act of self-harm.

‘Staff reacted quickly and paramedics attended. No other prisoners were involved.

‘The prison is investigating the incident and police were informed as a matter of course.’

Frances Crook, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, was critical of conditions in prisons today.

She said: ‘Prison windows allow virtually no ventilation so temperatures in tiny cells holding two or three men soar to unbearable levels and the stench from the open toilet is overwhelming.

‘Men are caged in these cells for up to 23 hours a day.

‘We have reverted to prison conditions of the eighteenth century.’

The incident comes after a critical report of the Category B prison was released by the Independent Monitoring Board.

The organisation’s annual review said a 25 per cent cut in budget had led to the loss of 140 officers despite the capacity of the prison being upped in the same period.

The IMB said the changes in operations were ‘unsustainable’ and would lead to ‘more prisoner disruption and a further reduction in already low staff morale’ in the future.

It said prisoners were being stopped from having showers, work and education programmes were being cancelled, prisoners with serious mental health problems were being kept in cells formerly used for solitary confinement and Muslim inmates’ food had been contaminated with pork products.

Speaking earlier this week, a Prison Service spokesman said: ‘Staffing levels at HMP Nottingham are at an appropriate level to ensure the prison runs safely.

‘Our approach to staffing levels has been agreed with the unions and puts prison officers back in frontline roles where they are most needed.’

But a woman visiting the prison said the conditions were ‘dreadful.’

She added: ‘It is disgusting. They hardly leave their cells, being in there at least 23 hours a day if not 24.

‘They can have as little as one shower a week and exercise twice a week, which they are meant to have every day. That place is just horrible.’
