The Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations, has hinted of plans to regulate the labour migration sector as a way of sanitizing the business for the mutual benefit of all stakeholders.

According to the Ministry, government will ensure that all recruitment agencies in the country are properly licensed and certified.

Speaking at an event to inaugurate the Private Employers Gild Ghana (PEGG), sector minister, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, said government will make sure that the Ministry works with embassies especially the Gulf countries, to orient all potential travelers on their contracts.

“The Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations will work with embassies especially the Gulf countries to orient all potential travelers on their contracts, culture issues, traveling procedures/protocols among others, before visas are issued out to them. A periodic review meeting will be held with operators in the industry to update and share information on changing trends in the labour migration front”.

He added that most Ghanaian youth often find themselves in dangerous situations when they travel to other countries in search of better jobs, hence the government’s decision to react swiftly on such cases.

“In recent times, Ghanaian youth and the working class have embarked on travels to various countries especially to the Gulf countries in search of jobs, and to advance their careers. These travels have however been bedeviled with some negatives mostly from Gulf countries which have called for concern among Ghanaians, and the government has subsequently reacted swiftly to such reported cases”.
