The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has rubbished some documents making rounds in the media, purported to be the outcome of investigations  into the causes of the NDC’s defeat by the Kwesi Botchwey committee.

Some media houses have in the past few days published varied stories about the NDC, based on the supposed Kwesi Botchwey committee report.

[contextly_sidebar id=”LQYjuhaiD7BdFZDzHUCBzReyceDhGLit”]But speaking in an interview with Citi News’ Umaru Sanda Amadu, Asiedu Nketia said the documents are fake, because the party has not published the committee’s report.

“We’ve taken a position that Kwesi Botchwey’s report is meant for internal consumption so it has not been published anywhere. So any commentary that is being run or any alleged capturing of Botchwey’s report and serialization cannot represent any genuine document coming from NDC.”

The NDC General Secretary further accused the NPP of using the supposed documents to divert attention from major issues in the country.

“I have also observed that, it looks like the NPP government wants to use some fake Kwesi Botchwey report to divert the attention of Ghanaians from the hardships that they are going through. So it’s like they are always using something purporting to be coming from the Botchwey’s report to divert attention of any major issue that seems to be indicting the government,” he added.

Mahama laughs off supposed Kwesi Botchwey report

Former President John Mahama, who was amused by the recent publications, also took to social media platform Twitter, to make a mockery of it.

“It appears ‘KB report has been adopted by some media as the new handbook for any challenge facing Gh…. In the event of crisis, open any page and quote. Lol,” he tweeted.

NDC quiet on Kwesi Botchwey

The leadership of the NDC has been tight-lipped over findings of the report which was submitted in June 2017, after months of touring and holding consultative meetings with interest groups and individuals across the country.

However, some media outlets including the Daily Guide newspaper and Accra-based Joy FM in series of news stories, have made public what they claim to be some findings of the committee.

The publications, among others, have pointed to Stan Dogbe and Elvis Afyiie Ankrah as John Mahama’s undoing.

It also indicated that, the report had cited some officials at the Flagstaff House during Mahama’s tenure of shortchanging journalists by cutting down budgeted stipends for the presidential press corps and pocketing the rest.

The 13-member Kwesi Botchway committee set up by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to probe the party’s election 2016 defeat, cited rifts between Parliamentary candidates and constituency executives as a major failing, according to the NDC MP for Odododiodioo, Nii Lante Vanderpuye.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, Mr. Vanderpuye, who was part of the committee, noted that “Parliamentary candidates were not working with the constituency well.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”1T5xiJkBU7oLOySmgajseoIkzZ5UHHEP”]He explained that on the committee’s work around the country, “what came out clearly was the fact that there was a disconnect between the party grassroots, constituency executives, regional executives and national executives.”

“For example, in certain places we went, the people said that for four years now, we have not seen a regional organizer, we have not seen regional chairman, we have not seen this person, we have not seen the regional chairman, we’ve not seen the MP; so it was all these factors put together.”

 Complacency played its part

Mr. Vanderpuye also attributed the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 elections to complacency on the part of “a lot of” party members, including President Mahama.

“Going around the country and listening to some of the people, you could say complacency was one of the factors that affected us… From the local level to the top – everybody. Even the President himself was too complacent. President Mahama himself was too sure of winning so we took certain things for granted.”

Mr. Vanderpuye said “the work we did in 2012, we didn’t do that much work in 2016. I must be frank.”

He further admitted that the NDC’s reliance on infrastructural development may have sent wrong signals internally.

According to him, “we thought that as a government, we had done a lot of work. We had caused a lot of infrastructure social change and there was no reason for us to lose.”

“If you study factors that led to victories in the past, there was no way we should have lost the elections if the same factors had been at play. But I think in 2016, the perception and ideals of the Ghanaian voter changed from those factors we are used to, to other issues.”

The Kwesi Botchway Committee presented its findings to the National Executive Council (NEC) on Monday, June 19.

As part of its recommendations, the committee asked the party to take a holistic look at its biometric electoral register, and take urgent steps to restore the integrity of the register.

A seven-year-old Brazilian boy has been named after so many French football stars that he struggles to pronounce his own name.

He is called Zinedine Yazid Zidane Thierry Henry Barthez Eric Felipe Silva Santos.

The little Zidane, as he is simply known, can pronounce his first three names without a problem but stumbles after that.

“I don’t know them yet. I never learned them,” Zidane told the G1 news website.

Even though France defeated Brazil in the 2006 World Cup, the boy’s father said he decided to pay tribute to three of the team’s stars: Barthez, Zidane and Henry.

The name Eric is a tribute to French forward and Manchester United legend Eric Cantona while Felipe pays homage to Brazil’s manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Silva Santos is the last name of the family, which lives in a suburb of Maceio, the capital of the northeastern state of Alagoas, where his father flies the flags of Brazil and France together.

His father, Petrucio Santos, said he became passionate about France when he visited two daughters who live in the European country a few years ago.

“I was won over by the friendliness of French people and I decided to learn the language to be able to speak it without sounding ridiculous if I visit again,” the shopkeeper said.

But when Zidane was asked whether he liked his name, he said: “No. I would have loved to be named Luiz Gustavo,” the Brazilian midfielder.
