The Kukuom Traditional Council in the Brong Ahafo Region has given government a 72-hour ultimatum to deploy military men to the town or it will advise residents to arm themselves.

There were clashes in the area last week between members of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who accused each other of manipulating the voter transfer exercise in the constituency for their gain.

The incident led to the destruction of properties including the offices of the Electoral Commission(EC) in the area.

At a press conference in Kukuom today, the Spokesperson for the Kukuom Traditional Council, Nana Twenewaa Ampem said they have lost confidence in the Police in the area.

“The reason why we are calling on government to intervene in our peace is because we do not have trust the Police so we are calling on government to intervene to send military men to take the property and the people in the Asunafo South district.

“They destroyed a lot of properties, equipment, properties, computers. Who are they and where are they from? They have not arrested anybody and that is why we are calling  for military intervention. We cannot say the people should go out but they will advise themselves if nothing happens. Everbody will arm himself or herself. They can’t sit down for people from somewhere to come and attack the citizens of Kukuom.

EC suspends votes transfer

Clashes between the two parties compelled the EC to suspend the voter transfer exercise in the constituency.

The EC is however uncertain as to whether it will extend the exercise.

The Electoral Commission is yet to take a definitive action on whether or not to extend the voter transfer exercise at Kukuom in the Asunafo South Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The exercise was disrupted following clashes in the area.

Confusion broke out last week between supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who accused each other of manipulating the exercise for their gain.

The ensuing clashes led to destruction of some electoral equipment at the offices of the EC necessitating a suspension of the exercise.

But Director of Communications at the EC, Eric Dzakpasu, told Citi News they are awaiting a police report on the incident which will then inform the commission’s next move.

He noted that, the issue has come to their attention and “the commission is making all the necessary arrangements and also with the security to ensure the safety of people.”

“I’m sure that as soon as the arrangements are ready, it would be made known. Apart from getting the equipment ready too, there are security arrangements and implications and we are yet to get the Police investigative report on the whole issue. So immediately, I cannot tell how soon it’s going to be but I hope it wouldn’t take too long,” Dzakpasu added.

The EC’s Director of Communication also added that, they would come out with the necessary modalities after they have been adequately briefed on the matter.

“When all the necessary arrangements are made and all the necessary security precautions are taken then the commission would be able to come out definitely on the modalities for the completion of that exercise in the area,” he added.

We’ll ensure culprits in Kukuom clashes are arrested

The NPP had earlier said it will ensure that supposed party members who were involved in the clashes are arrested.

NPP parliamentary nominee for the Asunafo South constituency, George Boateng told Citi News they will ensure that persons found culpable are punished.

“If it comes out that they[ NPP supporters] vandalised the offices they will have to go through the law. In the same way those who vandalised the NPP office will also be made to face the law.”

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said it will ensure that supposed party members who were involved in clashes at Kukuom in the Brong Ahafo region are arrested.

Some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and NPP were involved in violent clashes on Thursday.

The office of the NPP in the area was invaded by men believed to be supporters of the governing NDC, leading to some sustaining cutlass wounds .

This followed allegations that the NPP was busing foreigners to transfer their votes to some polling centres in the ongoing voter transfer exercise by the Electoral Commission.

Hours after the incident, the Kukuom Divisional Police Commander, DSP Simon Akabati, told Citi News supporters of the NPP, this dawn, also ransacked offices of the NDC, in what appears to be a reprisal attack.

Speaking on Eyewitness News, the NPP parliamentary nominee for the Asunafo South constituency, George Boateng, said those found culpable will face the full rigors of the law.

“If it comes out that they[ NPP supporters] vandalised the offices they will have to go through the law. In the same way those who vandalised the NPP office will also be made to face the law.”

He further appealed to NPP supporters in the region to keep calm as the party takes measures to avoid a recurrence of such an incident.

Meanwhile the Kukuom Divisional Police Command in the Brong Ahafo region is holding an emergency District Security Committee (DISEC) meeting over the disturbances in the area.
