Over 1,500 so-called affordable housing units that were started under former President John Kufuor, are wasting away at Kpone in the Kpone Katamanso District of the Greater Accra Region.

The housing project, which comprises 1,524 housing units commenced in 2006, but remains uncompleted.

Sod-cutting for the commencement of the abandoned project, was done by then Works and Housing Minister, Hackman Owusu Agyemang.

When Citi News’ visited the project site, it was that that most of the buildings have been taken over by weeds with no activity, as reptiles moved freely in the apartments intended to house to Ghanaians in need of a comfortable place of abode.

The iron rods in the beams and pillars were exposed and fast deteriorating, whilst wooden panels and frames were rotten.

Some of the housing units that looked almost completed, had some cracks in them with their mosquito nets looking worn out.

The project site have been covered by bushes thick enough to serve as a safe haven for criminals.

Termites had begun feasting on hundreds of door and window frames packed in some of the rooms.

The buildings are three-storey flats including one and two bedrooms, abandoned at lintel level, awaiting roofing, plastering, and other finishing touches.

Affordable Housing projects

As part of efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit which was about 500,000 in 2006, former President Kufuor initiated the Kpone affordable housing project as well as others in the Kumasi and Borteman in the Greater Accra Region, at a cost of over $300 million funded by the Government of Ghana.

The project consultant then, Ernest Biney, promised that the project will be completed in 2007.

The current state of the structures, will demand extensive works to make it usable.

A group in the Greater Accra Region, known as the Indigenous Youth of Kpone have threatened to embark on a demonstration if  authorities fail to end the haphazard sale of the Kpone Cemetery land.

[contextly_sidebar id=”CuviajGjQtHoSDxlWoNf44lvTrEZlDif”]They have also warned those involved in the act to put an immediate stop to it or face their wrath.

A member of the group who spoke on condition of anonymity said : “this is our cemetery land but it has been encroached by a factory and some new developers who do not have any permit but no one is ready to pull the structure down.”

He stated that they are planning a demonstration and are in the process of writing a letter to the Assembly and the Police informing them of their plans to demolish the structure.

Another said: “this is the only thing we have and I am sure they are planning to sell this one as well and we will resist it with our blood, we will not allow it to happen.”

“This is our last resting place and we will make sure we protect it,” he added.

Residents in Sekondi-Takoradi furious over closure of Cemetery

The development follows similar reports about the closure of the Sekondi-Takoradi Cemetery in the Western Region which suggested that the space allocated for burial had been exhausted.

Residents who were notified of the closure on August 7th, 2017, were furious about the decision to close down the cemetery.

Some residents however blamed the closure on encroachment on the cemetery land.

Chase Logistics, as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, has cut sod for the construction of a magistrate court facility; and a modern library for the Kpone area in the Greater Accra Region.

The project, which is estimated to cost an hundred thousand Ghana cedis, is scheduled to last for six months from the commencement date.

Addressing the chief and people of the Kpone traditional area, the Executive Director of Chase Logistics, Daniel Amoah, noted that the construction of the facility is a gesture by the company as parts of its support to the area.

He said “the company places premium on education as one of the surest and sustainable means to achieve holistic development of a community and a nation.”

Mr. Amoah added that “a conducive atmosphere for reading and research that a library provides is crucial to the learning process of every people or student, including adults. It is precisely for this reason that Chase Logistics gladly agreed with the Kpone Traditional Council to put up a library attached to the court for the community” he added.

The Paramount Chief for the Kpone Traditional Area, Nii Tetteh Out, was full of appreciation to the company.

He admonished his subjects to ensure they protect the facility and ensure good maintenance culture so that the project benefits future generations.

The District Chief Executive for Kpone Katamanso, Solomon Tetteh, also thanked Chase Logistics for the gesture, and called on other corporate bodies in the area to emulate the gesture, and extend a hand of support to the Assembly.
