Stakeholders of Konongo Odumase Senior High School are to meet on Saturday to determine the fate of students whose demonstration against the school’s authorities led to its closure.

The meeting, according to the chairman of Board of Governors of the school, Dr Yaw Amakye, would discuss among other things, the next line of action following threats by the students to burn down the school.

Among those expected to attend the meeting are staff and management of the school, parents, representatives of the Ghana Education Service and traditional authorities.

Members of the Board of Governors of the school last Monday held an emergency meeting to agree on the Saturday’s stakeholders’ convocation.

Background

On November 25 and November 26, 2016 respectively, irate students of KOSS embarked on two demonstrations to protest against the transfer of 10 teachers for their alleged involvement in the planning of an earlier demonstration.

The students allegedly threatened to burn down the school if the transfer of the 10 teachers were not reversed.

Subsequently, the board shut down the school for fear of destruction of property and possibly loss of lives.

Teaching and learning activities at the Konongo Odumase Senior High School in the Ashanti Region have come to a halt following a decision by the school’s board to send the students home for rioting.

Speaking to Citi News, David Asare, tutor at the school who also doubles as the Chairman of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) for the Asante Akyem Central Municipality said  the decision was taken after a board meeting.

The students went on rampage on Friday at the premises of the school over what they described as ‘unlawful’ transfer of some ten teachers by the headmistress, Comfort Odehe.

The students claimed the headmistress’ action was because the teachers were leading a “crusade” for the arrest of another teacher who had allegedly sodomised two of the students.

During the protest, the students threatened to burn down the school.

“Students have been asked to go home as a result of the demonstration that they had, the board chairman was around and asked the children to go home. He said they would be communicated to as and when they want them to come back. It was as a result of the board meeting that the decision was arrived at since we did not want to take chances,” David Asare noted.

Mr. Asare said the board is expected to hold further consultations with “some major stakeholders and deliberate on the issues raised by the students.”

“For the union, it is an administrative issue that has come up and the teachers involved are both NAGRAT and GNAT members so the union is also seeing how best it can mediate and possibly bring an end to this situation that the teachers are going through. Per the letters that were issued to them [transferred teachers], they were to report to their new stations on December 1. This implies that from the 1st of December they are no longer part of this institution,” he explained.

Students of Konongo Odumase Senior High School in the Ashanti Region are demanding the immediate dismissal of their headmistress, Comfort Odehe who they accuse of illegally transferring some ten teachers of the school.

The students say, the headmistress’ action was a deliberate attempt to prevent the teachers from fighting a sodomy case in the school.

Kwame Amponsah, a reporter with Kumasi-based Angel FM told Citi News, scores of students in the school went on rampage on Friday night, chanting battle songs.

The situation forced security officers to quickly move to the school and fire warning shots to disperse the angry students.

Some of the agitated students who spoke to the reporter called on the headmistress to immediately make public her reasons for the arbitrary transfer.

They lamented that the development will negatively affect their academic performance.

“We don’t know why the teachers have been transferred. The headmistress should come out and tell us. These teachers are all very helpful to us. If that is the case, she should rather leave so they can return because, the science students will be ones disadvantaged. These teachers actually help us compete in the National Science and Maths quiz.”

“We want the headmistress to come out and tell us exactly why she has transferred our teachers. All she did at assembly was to inform us that they were leaving, without any reason. We don’t want her here anymore. If we don’t hear from any of the authorities, we will all boycott class on Monday,” one of the angry students said.

According to Kwame Amponsah, calm had returned to the school on Saturday morning [November 26], but the students insist, they will stage another protest to challenge the headmistress’ decision.

Meanwhile, a teacher of the school who spoke to Citi News on condition of anonymity said moves have been initiated to assist the affected teachers pursue the matter in court.
