Residents and pedestrians in and around Korle Gonno in Accra are now able to breathe fresh air without the regular smell of faeces.

This is according to the managers of the new Lavender Hill Faecal Treatment Plant which is now fully operational.

The troubling situation had existed for decades because of the poor disposal of faecal waste into the sea.

The $80 million dollar plant treats over two hundred trucks of waste daily and 80 percent of the entire faecal waste generated in the Greater Accra region.

In an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Business Development and Communication Manager for the Sewage Systems Ghana Limited, Lola Asiseh Ashitey said the facility has enjoyed high patronage since it began full operations in January.

“We have three plants here in Accra. We have one at Kotoku near Nsawam serving the northern part of Accra that has the capacity to receive 100 trucks per day. We also have one feacal treatment plant in Accra at James Town very close to where we have the Lavinder Hill. That also has the capacity and its receiving averagely 228 trucks each day. We also have the Mudor waste water treatment plant.”

“Before Sewage system Ghana limited it was dumped directly into the sea or into a river body or bare lands. So we have got the solution and we solving 80 percent of Accra’s feacal flush problem and we are looking forward to doing business with the other MMDAs,” she added.

About Lavinder Hill

Lavender Hill was the name given to the area because of the pungent smell that emanates from there.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the years attempted to stop the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) from dumping such waste into the Korle Lagoon at Lavender Hill but was unsuccessful.

EPA later took legal action against the AMA but that also proved futile.

Former President John Dramani Mahama in November 2016 officially shut down the Lavender Hill and opened the new septic treatment plant to improve the waste situation in the capital city.

It is being operated by Sewage Systems Ghana Limited.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has inaugurated the 17th United States Agency for International Development (USAID) supported school at Korle Gonno, in Accra.

The school is the testament to the USAID and AMA shared commitment to working together to make sure every single Ghanaian child has access to quality basic education.

The USAID is assisting in the construction of 18-unit three-storey buildings for public primary schools with Science and Computer laboratories and library facilities.

Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, addressing teachers, school children and parents said: “By investing in essential educational infrastructure to increase access to basic education and to help eradicate the shift system is a way of encouraging life-long learning.

“It is also to help the nation to improve economic growth, create new jobs and ensure the prosperity of each and every Ghanaian child.”

Dr Vanderpuije said the Government attached great importance to quality basic education of children for the betterment of their future.

He said schools that had benefitted from the USAID-supported projects had improved their academic excellence, adding that; “When you move into a Millennium City School you must excel.”

“Our children deserve the best and we must do just that to give the Ghanaian child the tools they need for their personal and professional success,” he said.

He said: “An educated nation needs enthusiastic, well trained teachers as well as committed parents who make sure their children learn hard.

“To you teachers I am convinced that this building is going to open an opportunity for you to perform better to add your name to the prominent schools in Accra and also to glorify USAID for this wonderful gesture.”

Mr Fritz Baffour, the Member of Parliament for the area, expressed gratitude to the USAID and the AMA for bringing the project to the Ablekuma South Constituency.

He said the Constituency had received a lot of projects under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, which included the GHȼ300,000.00 equipment to the Dansoman Polyclinic, 40 computers to the St Mary’ School and outboard motors to the fishermen.

“It is a milestone for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to continue with its good works,” he said.
