The family of a 9-year old girl allegedly defiled by a 19-year old fisherman, Francis Eshun, at Komenda in the Central Region, is asking for financial assistance for the victim to have full medical treatment at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

The girl, whose intestines and uterus are believed to have been affected after the heinous act, is responding to treatment.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SisYoxBXIKeSBFrsVTvXwYfPD7XpiX9D”]However her family says they are struggling to continue the treatment due to financial constraints.

A philanthropist donated GHC 1,000 to the family earlier this month, through the Central Regional Police Headquarters, to cover her weekly medical reviews and check-ups at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

However, when Citi News visited the victim’s family at Komenda on Saturday, the forty-six year old grandmother of the girl disclosed that the amount received has already been spent on transportation from Komenda to the hospital and back, as well as on medical expenses because the girl is yet to be placed on the National Health Insurance Scheme.

“It costs us GHC 300 each day we go for a review at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. Now, we are financially dry. We have already spent the cash donation we received. We need money that will make it possible to send her to hospital every Monday and Tuesday”, the grandmother revealed.

In July this year, the suspect allegedly lured the 9-year old girl to a secluded place one evening, and defiled her.

The suspect is said to have carried the victim home when he noticed she was in severe pain, and was rushed to the Cape Coast Metro Hospital.

She was later referred to the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital where a team of doctors performed a surgery on her, and was on admission there for weeks before she was discharged to be brought for review weekly.

The suspect was arrested and arraigned before a Cape Coast Circuit Court, but is currently on bail.

The grandfather of the girl, a fifty-four year old mechanic, had been bearing the cost of medical treatments and the legal costs, but he told Citi News that he is now financially challenged and is unable to perform that role effectively.

In his appeal for support, he said, “This girl has been badly bruised, and we only pray it doesn’t affect her future. It’s a big blow to this family. We are appealing to all those who can to come to her aid because she could be an asset to Ghana in the future.”

He is appealing to Ghanaians and the government particularly, to fiercely fight defilement in the Central Region and the country as a whole, saying, “All those perpetuating such cruel acts should stop it, and must be dealt with; Ghanaians used not to be like this” he noted.

This incident is said to have happened long before the one at Assin Dadientem also in the Central Region, where a four-year old girl was allegedly defiled by a seventeen year old.

The Komenda Sugar Factory in the Central Region, which was shut down few weeks  after it was opened by government, has been re-opened to commence production, barely a week to the December 7 general elections.

Some residents in the area had accused government of attempting to hoodwink them into voting for the incumbent NDC.

Government had been criticized for investing several millions of dollars to revive the factory, only to suddenly shut it down for so-called maintenance, when in reality, it lacked the raw material, sugarcane, to operate fully.

But according to the Director of Communications and Strategy at the factory, Ransford Vanni-Amoah, the plant will from next week produce some one thousand bags of sugar daily.

“Yesterday [Tuesday], we started a boiler, and we are on course so production has started. We are hoping that by Friday, we will start the crushing of sugarcane so we are hoping that by next week Tuesday; we will start seeing sugar from our plant.”

He explained that, within the first week, about 500 tonnes of sugarcane will be crushed.

“For the first week, we are going to crush 500 tonnes of sugar a day; then the second week we move to 600 tonnes; then gradually we will be going up. For the 500 tonnes a day, it means we will get 50 tonnes of sugar. The 50 tonnes will give us about 1000 50KG of sugar. So this implies that within the first week, we are going to get 1000 bags of sugar.”

Vanni-Amoah also said the facility will have about 700 staff, and close to 2000 sugarcane growers.

“Within the factory, we are having close to 700 workers, aside that when you go to the field; we have 2000 people who help us do the harvesting.”

Galamsey not affecting sugarcane supply

Ransford Vani-Amoah had earlier rejected claims that activities of illegal miners is affecting the cultivation of raw materials for the factory.

According to him, the factory has enough supply of sugarcane from different sources; apart from the immediate environs of the factory which has been destroyed by illegal miners.

“We are having farmers calling us from even Eastern Region, Asamankese and the Akyiase areas, who are all willing to supply us with sugarcane, and we are dealing with them,” he said.

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) , Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom believes the Komenda Sugar Factory was deliberately set up by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to frustrate him.

Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, a former Member of Parliament for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) Constituency, where the factory is located, said the NDC is embarking on various projects in the area in a bid to win the hearts of the electorates.

[contextly_sidebar id=”WFkv0EbgfYjmCNA47TORCHCvEvCNCcC5″]“Because I am from KEAA, there are people who are determined that if they want to shut me down politically, that is where they have to shut me down so I do not get anything there. Why do you think Komenda Sugar Factory is sitting there even though there are no raw materials. Why do you think there is a fish processing plant that is sited there even though it doesn’t have the fish. Why do you think they are doing certain things throughout the streets in Elmina? They have come to tar the places that didn’t need any tarring except the part that leads to where my companies are. Those ones they have left. ”

“They have come to put a bridge, a monstrosity in front of the historic bridge house so now we cannot even get to the bridge house hotel, they have blocked it. They have put a design that no one in the world will tolerate and sometimes people think if we do it to Papa Kwesi Nduom, it is to him. No, they are doing it against the people of KEEA.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Nduom however stated that he is unfazed by all these projects, since residents in the area will vote for the PPP despite the NDC efforts to sabotage him.

“I am saying that December 7, 2016 the people of Komenda will prove people wrong and will let them know that that seat, in spite of all the monies that are being pushed there and all the things that people are doing just for votes purposes will fail because I believe the people will do the right thing.”

Free and fair election not possible

Dr Papa Kwesi Ndoum further stated that this year’s elections would not be free and fair, citing what he calls, a flawed voters register and abuse of incumbency.

According to him, these developments will undermine the credibility of the polls.
