A Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), of the Police Service today [Tuesday], for investigations into the allegations of treason brought against him.

A member of his legal team, Victor Adawudu, assured that Mr. Anyidoho will present himself as directed by the police.

“We would abide by the terms of the [bail] conditions and go and see the police. That is all we need to do. They will decide what exactly the way forward is,” the Lawyer told Citi News.

In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM where he was commenting on the controversial Ghana-US defence cooperation agreement, Mr. Anyidoho warned that President Nana Akufo-Addo could be overthrown, stating that the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

Mr. Anyidoho was subsequently picked up last Tuesday by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

His Oyarifa residence in Accra was also searched before he was moved from the police headquarters and sent to an unknown location.

He was subsequently detained by the CID and spent two nights in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations after which he was granted bail on Friday.

Police have also been permitted by a High Court to seize all electronic devices belonging to Mr. Anyidoho.

The electronic gadgets including laptops, iPhone and iPads, believed to store information related to treason in the premises of Mr. Anyidoho are to aid investigations.

Mr. Anyidoho is yet to be charged with any offence despite earlier reports that he had been charged with treason.

Mr. Dennis Amfo-Sefah, Constituency Chairman of the Tema West branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on Mr. Koku Anyidoho, Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress [NDC], to apologize to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

“First and foremost, President Akufo-Addo richly deserves the apology because he as President earned his legitimacy through the ballot box and not the gun. Secondly, the President is the current custodian of the people’s power.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”3DutvkHRcksEU5FFlH27hgYP7EZd766P”]Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the supposed treasonable comments by Mr. Anyidoho, Mr. Amfo-Sefah said Koku ought to show maturity through remorse.

He added that an apology from Mr. Anyidoho would deodorize the political atmosphere which he badly polluted with his comments.

Mr. Anyidoho is currently on bail after he had been released from Police custody following investigations into his comments.

Speaking on an Accra-based radio station last Tuesday, Mr. Anyidoho allegedly made certain security threatening comments that compelled the Bureau of National Investigations to pick him up for questioning.

To give his statement gravitas, he had referenced the 1972 overthrow of the Second Republic by former Military General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong, that government had been led by Prime Minister K.A. Busia with President Akufo-Addo’s father, Edward Akufo-Addo, as ceremonial President.

According to Mr Anyidoho, that coup was a historical event that could repeat itself.

“The reference to that Acheampong coup was especially distasteful because in doing so, Mr. Anyidoho was citing a motivational example in the incitement of mayhem. And the fact that President Akufo-Addo’s father was a direct victim of that coup made it so distasteful,” he said.

The Tema West NPP Chairman brushed aside justifications that in the past there had been similar unfortunate declarations by people from both divides of Ghana’s politics, saying Koku Anyidoho’s throwback to a physical coup made his more dangerous.

He urged the NDC Deputy General Secretary to mitigate the mess he had already caused by apologizing to the President.

A member of pressure group, Occupy Ghana, Sydney Casely-Hayford says he wouldn’t have arrested Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Koku Anyidoho if he was in charge of security in the country.

According to him, Anyidoho made the alleged treasonable comments because he was only seeking attention and could not have carried through his threat.

“For me everything that Koku said and did a few days ago, I found totally in character. I think this is what Koku is all about. If I were in charge of BNI or internal security, I would have let it go because frankly, this is who he is.  I think he needs the attention…but he has to be very careful,” Casely-Hayford said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”X5VA2Fg0odrGmnzZrOiLC6mALsJX6Axs”] Mr Anyidoho was picked up last Tuesday by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly making some claims on public radio deemed treasonable.

He had allegedly indicated that President Akufo-Addo would be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US saying it could spark a “social revolution” in Ghana.

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhoea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he is fed up on the seat,’’ he added.

He subsequently detained by the CID where he spent two nights in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations after which he was granted bail on Friday.

Speaking on Citi FM’s current affairs and news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday, Casely-Hayford further said Anyidoho’s remarks were utterly needless.

“I didn’t like Koku, right from the beginning. I didn’t like his style, aggressiveness, his boisterousness and his approach. I found all of that…ungentlemanly and unsavoury…The remarks that he made, in my opinion, are completely and unfounded. There was no need for it. He could have been a little bit responsible with what he said,” Casely-Hayford who is also a social commentator added.

I’ve not been charged – Anyidoho

Koku Anyidoho, has discounted claims that the Criminal Investigations Department has officially charged him with treason.

According to him, the CID is still investigating his alleged crime and has not proffered any charges against him.

“I was only in custody and let the records state that I have not been charged. I won’t go into the legality of it but I have not been charged with any offence. The police are still investigating the matter,” he said in an interview on The Big Issue on Saturday.

The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho says his respect for the country’s security agencies have shot up after spending two nights in their custody.

According to him, during his confinement at the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), he was not manhandled or tortured despite allegedly threatening coup but was instead treated professionally.

“The state said I had to be detained and I was detained. Yes, it is not the best to be in solitary confinement but then I now had the opportunity to understand the workings of our state institutions and it allowed me as a politician to begin to accept and respect the police, [and] BNI bigger than ever before.  Not that I ever disrespected them but now they have my greater respect. What we have to do as politicians are to support them to operate properly and more efficiently,” he added.

Anyidoho was detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly threatening coup and civil revolt on public radio.

He had allegedly indicated that President Akufo-Addo will be overthrown because of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US saying it could spark a “social revolution” in Ghana.

“There will be a civilian coup d’état. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer diarrhoea. He said he wanted to be president, but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat,’’ he added.

He was subsequently detained by the CID where he spent two nights in the custody of the BNI after which he was granted bail last Friday.

Recounting his experience on Citi FM’s news analysis programme, The Big Issue, on Saturday, Koku Anyidoho said he was also given proper health care while in custody at the BNI.

He, however, called on Ghanaians to give the security agencies their full support to enable them to discharge their duties as expected of them.

“I respect the way they operated, I was not handcuffed, I was not maltreated. Never did the CID or BNI maltreat me. It’s an experience. When you are in solitary confinement it is an experience. I am not the first and I will not be the last. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years, Osagyefo went through, [former] President Rawlings went through it. Many people have gone through it so I have no pain, I have no hurt. I don’t hate anybody and I refuse to hate anybody in this matter.”

“I will forever respect the police, CID, BNI to the extent that even medical care in the BNI, they will grant you the best of medicare. In my case I was not tortured, they gave me a doctor, they allowed me to have medicare,” he recounted on the Big Issue.

I’ve not been charged

Koku Anyidoho, also discounted claims that the CID has officially charged him with treason.

According to him, the CID is still investigating his alleged crime and has not proffered any charges against him.

“I was only in custody and let the records state that I have not been charged. I won’t go into the legality of it but I have not been charged with any offence. The police are still investigating the matter,” he added.

The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic (NDC), Koku Anyidoho says he still remains an unrepentant social democrat despite his detention by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly threatening a civil revolt and a coup in Ghana.

Although he described his detention as an “experience” Anyidoho said Ghanaians should allow the laws and security agencies to work without hindrances.

“I remain an unrepentant social democrat, I remain an unrepentant member of the NDC and I remain an unrepentant supporter of the progressives thinking and the progressive forces. Issues to do with what I was reported to have said that the police dutifully started investigating is within the law, let the law take its course,” he said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”7UV7cRCvTCt1qZBs6cvOvH4Sehrvz116″]Anyidoho made the comment on Citi FM’s current affairs and news analysis programme, The Big Issue on Saturday when the host asked whether he has repented after his experience during his detention.

He also indicated that the security agencies did not manhandle him as being speculated.

I’ve not been charged

The NDC Deputy General Secretary also rejected claims that he has been charged by the CID for treason.

According to him, the CID is still investigation his alleged crime and has not proffered any charges against him.

Anyidoho has since been widely condemned for the comments.

He subsequently spent two nights at the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations after which the CID granted him bail on Friday.

Speaking on the Big Issue, Koku Anyidoho blamed the media for misreporting the alleged charges proffered against him by the CID.

“[Whether] mainstream media, social media, let us be all measured in the things that we report. As I came out of detention yesterday, from Graphic, [there were headlines such as] Koku Anyidoho charged. Who charged Koku Anyidoho? It’s sad. Who charged who? Where is the charge?” he fumed.

My detention was an experience

Recounting his confinement at the BNI, he said he was not manhandled, and was not also put in handcuffs as being speculated.

Mr. Anyidoho also described it as an experience saying his respect for the security agencies had gone up because of the professional manner in which they dealt with the case.

“The state said I had to be detained and I was detained; and it allowed me as a politician to begin to accept and respect the police, BNI bigger than ever before.  Not that I ever disrespected them but now they have my greater respect.”

Embattled Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is expected to reappear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for interrogation on Tuesday, April 3.

Mr. Anyidoho was invited by the CID on Tuesday after he suggested that President Nana Akufo-Addo could be overthrown over the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

[contextly_sidebar id=”rDYgnAb0b49FVo6PsPWvdbFXJt1dtLTV”]Mr. Anyidoho, after spending two nights in the custody of the BNI over his comments, was granted bail on Friday.

He was released by the CID in the presence of his father, Major General Henry Kwami Anyidoho and his lawyers.

Lawyer for Anyidoho, Victor Adawudu, however indicated on Eyewitness News that his client will report to the CID again on Tuesday.

Explaining circumstances leading to Anyidoho being granted bail, Mr. Adawudu said two eminent citizens of the country stood as surety for his release.

“The bail is a contract between the party that is the state and the suspect, so we had to negotiate the terms and in negotiating the terms, the two parties were able to come to a point where two eminent citizens of this country stood surety for him..We are to report back to the CID on Tuesday .”

Koku Anyidoho

He further pointed out that though his bail currently grants his client some level of freedom, he is expected to abide by the terms of his temporary release.

“After the bail he has his freedom, he has his respite. He can do everything. He can travel, but the sureties will make sure that at the time he should report, he reports.”

Koku not charged

The lawyer also clarified that Anyidoho had not been charged for treason or any other offence as reported earlier.

He indicated that Anyidoho can only be charged after investigations have been completed.

“He has not been charged for any offence. The Police only cautioned and investigated him for an offence of treason. He can only be charged after they finish investigations and they get evidence which will support any charge.”

The National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams has indicated the resolve of his party to continue its critique of the Akufo-Addo government following the arrest of its Deputy General Secretary of Koku Anyidoho.

Mr Anyidoho was arrested on Tuesday for comments he made in his criticism of the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US, which were deemed treasonable.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MIibAEMs7bflq8Qd3ODaXH6d1VoTAlMd”]His Oyarifa residence in Accra was also searched before he was moved from the police headquarters and sent to an unknown location after he was refused bail.

In an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, he warned of the overthrow of President Nana Akufo-Addo due to the ratification of the deal, stating that the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

Speaking after Mr. Anyidoho finalised processes for his bail, Mr. Adams said the NDC had only grown bolder by the treatment of its Deputy General Secretary.

“We in the NDC will not stop speaking about the wrongs that this government and President Nana Akufo-Addo and his VicePresident Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia are visiting on this country and continue to visit on the country.”

“Indeed were even more emboldened to continue to raise the wrongs and we are going to continue doing this. We will fight and speak against this occupation of foreign forces in our land. We will make sure the sovereignty of Ghana is protected,” Mr. Adams said.

The day after Mr. Anyidoho’s arrest, NDC bigwigs joined the Ghana First Patriotic Front, a coalition of opposition political parties, to demonstrate against the government for approving the controversial defence cooperation.

Support from Mahama

Former President, John Mahama was unhappy with the way Mr. Anyidoho was taken into custody by the police after the comments he made.

On Wednesday, Mr Mahama criticised the Police for what he described as their ‘high-handed’ responses to “innocent” Ghanaians who massed up at the Police Headquarters on Tuesday night in solidarity with the arrested NDC national executive.

In a Facebook post, the former President chided Akufo-Addo government for the manner in which Mr Anyidoho was arrested.

He, however, did not make mention of the comments made by Mr Anyidoho which have been widely condemned.

Mr. Mahama later visited Mr Anyidoho at the BNI headquarters.

The Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah has told citinewsroom.com that the Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) William Akwasi Appiah has been reassigned and not sacked as is being speculated.

According to him, Mr Appiah has been reassigned to the National Security Ministry.

Earlier reports suggested that Mr Appiah was sacked after a meeting held on Thursday.

But according to Mr. Kan-Dapaah, the move was part of a number of changes at the BNI and the National Security Ministry.

“We haven’t sacked the man. There is nothing like sacking, we didn’t talk about the sacking. Yes, he has been changed. There have been some changes at the Research department and also at the BNI and the National Security Ministry. We’ve moved people around.”

“He’s been moved from BNI to the Ministry of National Security,” Kan-Dapaah said in an interview with citinewsroom.com.

A statement signed by Information Minister, Mustapha Hamid said Mr Appiah will be replaced by the Director-General of Research at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Rasheed Seidu Inusah.

The statement added that Peter Nyarko Opata, who served as deputy to Mr. Seidu Inusah has now taken over as the substantive head of the department at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

This comes a day after former President John Mahama and a number of officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) were allowed access to Koku Anyidoho, who was in the custody of the BNI.

The group took pictures with Anyidoho which went viral on social media.

Mr Anyidoho was picked up by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday for making some comments deemed treasonable and was in the BNI custody.

He was subsequently charged with treason and spent two nights in BNI custody.

Mr Anyidoho was granted bail earlier on Thursday.

The embattled Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has been granted bail after spending two nights in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

Mr Anyidoho was released by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the agency handling the case, in the presence of his father, Major General Henry Kwami Anyidoho and his lawyers.

CitiNewsroom’s Fred Djabanor reported that the conditions under which he was released are immediately not known.

Mr Anyidoho was picked up at the International Press centre on Tuesday for making comments deemed treasonable.

[contextly_sidebar id=”M9HDwW5wNrxXCbQxrDlM50s6kcncjVKC”]He was subsequently charged with treason.

Police have since been given permission to seize all electronic devices belonging to Mr Anyidoho by a High Court.

The court gave permission for all electronic gadgets including laptops, iPhone and iPads, believed to hold information related to the charge to be seized to aid the police investigations.

Mr Anyidoho landed in hot waters when, in an interview on Accra-based Happy FM, he called for the overthrow of President Nana Akufo-Addo over the ratification of the controversial defence cooperation agreement between Ghana and the US.

He said the overthrow will be in the form of a “civilian coup d’etat”.

The host of the show on which the comments were made, Kwame Affrifa, had also been invited by the police to aid in their investigations.
