Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said he was “angry” that his side were unable to make a substitution before Willian equalised to earn Chelsea a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Klopp was trying to bring on Adam Lallana when Willian, who scored twice in a 4-0 win at Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday, struck in the 85th minute as what appeared to be a cross looped over Simon Mignolet and into the far corner.

“I was angry because we wanted to change the system but the referee didn’t give us the opportunity,” the German told BT Sport.

“I don’t know what he thought in this moment, he told me something about taking too long, I don’t understand it.

“How can we take too long? We didn’t want to time waste, we wanted to change the system and that’s why I was angry.”

The goal denied Mohamed Salah a dream outcome against his former club after the Liverpool winger had opened the scoring just after the hour with a close-range finish.

That was Salah’s 10th goal in just 13 Premier League games this season in what has been a superb start to the Egyptian’s Liverpool career.

Salah could even have won it for Liverpool in the final minute but his powerful drive was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

Chelsea are unbeaten in their past seven visits to Anfield, a run stretching back to 2013.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he has no problem with the mentality of his players after Sevilla fought back from 3-0 down at half-time to take a point from a dramatic Champions League game.

The Reds looked to be coasting into the knockout stage for the first time since 2009 as two goals from Roberto Firmino and one from Sadio Mane put them in total control.

Yet after Alberto Moreno needlessly conceded a free-kick against his former club, Wissam Ben Yedder’s header made it 3-1.

Moreno then conceded a penalty by clipping Ben Yedder, and the French striker scored after being ordered to retake a successful spot-kick because of encroachment.

Guido Pizarro poked home in the third minute of added time as the hosts snatched a draw.

“I don’t doubt the mentality of the boys, not a bit,” said Klopp, whose side must avoid defeat when they host Spartak Moscow on 6 December to ensure they advance from Group E.

“We showed already a fantastic mentality. We showed it in a lot of other games. It’s not like this.

“Yes, it was not perfect, that’s true, but it’s not a general problem.

“Could we have done better? 100%. Do I think it’s a mentality problem? 100% not. It’s a misjudgement.”

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says the Anfield club would not be allowed to play like Manchester United after their goalless draw at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool dominated for long spells but could not break United down, and Klopp said: “I’m sure if we played like this, you could not do this at Liverpool. Obviously for United it is OK.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho said he lacked attacking options.

“I needed my bench, and I didn’t have a bench,” said the Portuguese.

Liverpool managed a first clean sheet in eight games yet were left frustrated by United at Anfield for the second successive season.

They peppered United, who had 38% possession, with 20 shots but have won just once in eight matches in all competitions and have drawn the last three.

Klopp said his side was unlucky not to beat their fierce rivals in what was another much hyped but low-key game between two of the most successful clubs in English football.

“It’s quite difficult when a top-class team like United has that defensive approach,” said the German.

“I think United came here for the point and they got it. We wanted three points and didn’t get it.

“We were dominant, it is a home game for us so we should be dominant. I am okay with the performance – it is not my job to judge the United performance.

“For me today, one team who can become champion this year was in our stadium and is not a world apart from us.

“It’s not that we are playing different planets and they are really good and we do not find the entrance to the stadium.”

‘Game of Chess’

Mourinho described the second half as a game of chess, adding: “But my opponent didn’t open the door for me to win the game.”

The United boss, who did not start Marcus Rashford as a result of a knock, defended his team’s tactics and said United came to win the match.

“I was waiting for Jurgen to change, I was waiting for him to go more attacking but he kept the three strong midfielders all the time where he was having control because I only had Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.

“When I brought on Jesse Lingard and Rashford I was waiting for him to bring on Daniel Sturridge or Dominic Solanke.

“But he decided to change player by player and kept the strong midfield.

“That midfield today was stronger than my midfielder.”

Anyone who follows the news is aware of Kwesi Appiah’s recent “knowledge-sharing” trip to England.

Apparently, it was to sharpen his acumen ahead of the World Cup.

The Ghana coach and four assistants visited Anfield in March as part of a 10-day visit to Britain. The trip also included some time with the League Managers Association and the Football Association’s training centre at St George’s Park.

But he’s never spoken openly about the nuances of his knowledge-gathering trip.

Until now.

“It’s remarkable some of the advances they have made. My interest was not in how they train or stuff like that, no. My interest was in how team psychology and match analysis has grown and how we can use it here,” the coach told Citi Sports.

The 53-year old was speaking to a select group of journalists at a debriefing session earlier this week.

The four journalists, chosen by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (headline sponsor of the Black Stars) as well as  Standard Chartered (sponsors of Liverpool FC) were from Citi FM, Joy FM, Asempa FM and the Daily Graphic.

The thirty minute session was designed to allow the coach to explain the philosophies at play in the modern game, linking it to the relevance of modern techniques in this World Cup year and beyond.

“I learned a lot from Anfield, especially. Brendan Rodgers was willing to answer any questions I had and we spoke about tactics and match analysis and many things,”  Appiah said at the debriefing.

“I wish I could have stayed there for longer.”

The coach, known for his frugal nature when it comes to sharing information, was keen to go into how modern analytics and match scouting advances can make or break teams in real-time situations.

“Things are so advanced that with the latest technology it is possible to do real-time editing of matches as it goes on. This helps analysts make split-second decisions that can be the difference between a win and a loss.”

Citi Sports editor Gary Al-Smith copped an exclusive session with the World Cup-bound coach which was aired on the station’s Friday football show, FC Africa.

Kwesi Appiah: “Back home In Ghana, there just isn’t the opportunities for coaches to come together and share ideas on how to coach better young players, and that’s what is really impressive to see – that this collaboration is taking place at St. George’s Park.

“It’s really difficult because our pitches and facilities mean we can’t really do that.

“It’s something which we discuss regularly to encourage, and it’s one thing we’ll take away from our trip that happens here that I think is really beneficial to coaching.”
