KTN News, Citizen TV and NTV are currently off air on free to air and paid for platforms.

KTN News through Standard Group Editorial Director Joseph Odindo confirmed that the channel was off air in both free to air and paid for platforms.

He said they are investigating why the Government resorted to such actions, adding that if it is because of NASA ‘oathing’ coverage the State was overreacting.

Citizen has sent an alert saying the Communication Authority of Kenya has switched off Citizen TV and Radio over coverage of NASA ‘swearing-in’ plan.

In a statement Waruru Wachira the Managing Director- Royal Media Services Limited confirmed that Tuesday morning the Communication Authority disconnected Citizen and Inooro TV transmission.

He added that there was no official communication as to why this action was taken but was actively engaging relevant Government authorities to establish the reason the switch off.

On Friday, the Government threatened to switch off media stations that will cover the National Super Alliance ‘swearing-in’ ceremony at Uhuru Park.

In a statement on Monday, the Kenya Editors Guild said that some journalists were last Friday summoned at State House for unknown reasons.

“We have just learned today that on Friday last week, a section of media managers and select editors from the main media houses were quietly summoned to a meeting at the State House, Nairobi, the objectives which were unknown.

But the proceedings should be clear cause for alarm to the media and the public,” read part of the statement.

According to sources, the State had vowed to revoke licenses of media houses that will broadcast live the planned NASA swearing-in event on Tuesday.

Robbers in Kenya took a rather unconventional mode of entering a bank and making away with cash to the tune of 50 million Kenyan shillings (equivalent to $482,000).

The police confirmed the incident which happened on Monday at the Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) in Thika – an industrial town in Kiambu County, located north east of the capital, Nairobi.

The bank manager told the police that he found that cash had been stolen from two of the bank’s vault early Monday morning. “They broke into two safes…it is believed they used oxy-acytelene flames to drill holes into them,” police said.

Local media reports that the robbers had dug the tunnel which breaks off at a sewer line. Photos shared on social media show part of the tunnel leading into the bank. Some reports say they dug the tunnel over a period of six months. No arrests have so far been made.

Even though customers thronged the bank premises which had been cordoned off by police officers and investigators, the bank assured that depositors money was safe.

“There is no cause for alarm. Customers seeking to transact can do so at any other KCB branch or access services through our mobile and Internet banking platforms,” the bank said in a statement.

An IT expert has been charged with hacking into Kenya’s Revenue Authority and stealing $39m (£31m).

Alex Mutunga Mutuku, 28, is accused of electronic fraud but he denies any wrongdoing.

The prosecution says he is part of a wider network that is stealing money from several high-profile institutions.

Mr Mutuku was arrested after police conducted an operation following a tip-off that institutions were losing money.

A lawyer for Mr Mutuku, Tacey Makori, has asked for him to be released, arguing that police had failed to show enough evidence to warrant an extended detention.

He is being held while anti-cybercrime officers dig deeper into what they believe is an elaborate fraud scheme with international connections.

It allegedly involves hackers with access to high-tech equipment and software which enabled them to steal from corporations, Kenya’s Standard newspaper reports.

“It is a case of remote control hacking where the suspects operate smoothly with their machines and the next minute you realise you have no money in your account,” state prosecutor Edwin Okello is quoted by the newspaper as saying.

“The information we have is just a tip of the iceberg. The racket is big and involves people outside the country.”

Earlier this week, Kenyan police said a Chinese company was behind a spate of criminal activities, including the hacking of Kenya Revenue Authority.

Social media users in Kenya have been poking fun at President Uhuru Kenyatta over his perceived enthusiasm for launching projects, with great fanfare from his communications staff.

Critics say some of the projects “launched” by the president were already under way or had already been commissioned. Some others have been viewed as not meriting the weight of presidential publicity.Tweet mocking President Kenyatta

Last week, Mr Kenyatta, who faces elections in August, was in the city of Mombasa where he launched a footbridge, proudly described as a “non-motorized transport project”.

Some Twitter users have taken this as a cue to mock the president.

Using the hashtag #UhuruChallenge, they posted their own examples of things they were “launching” or “commissioning”.

Some parts of Kenya, including the capital, Nairobi, coastal and northern regions have been suffering power outages since the weekend because of a technical problem at a power station.

Perhaps inevitably, this provided another opportunity for satirical digs at Mr Kenyatta.

And one user thought Kenyans were unlikely to have heard the last of unimpressive presidential launches.
