The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Telecommunications Chamber, Ken Ashigbey, has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), to reconsider its stance against the use of mobile phones in Senior High Schools.

Speaking at the 87th Speech and prize-giving Day celebration of the St Augustine’s College in Cape Coast on Saturday, Mr. Ashigbey said mobile phone usage could be properly regulated in schools to advance academic work of students.

The anniversary celebration which was on the theme: “The role of technology in preparing students for the future global economy” brought together people from all walks of life including; old boys, staff, parents and other distinguished personalities from across the country.

Mr. Ashigbey said allowing SHS students to use mobile phones must not be a problem because students could be guided on the effective use of the internet and its profitability.

He was of the view that students should be taught to create content that would promote development rather than just being taught the basics of a computer and internet.

“Help students develop digital strategies by teaching them how to code and making coding part of their syllabus”, he said.

Mr. Ashigbey encouraged teachers to embrace the current technological trend as it was a necessary requirement in the fast changing technological world.

This he said would help them direct student’s interest in technology, and make them better prepared in the key skills of critical thinking, communication and creativity to better succeed in the global economy.

Former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Reverend Professor Emmanuel Martey, believes that some officials of the 10-month old New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, are already showing signs of corruption.

The man, who blatantly criticized officials of the erstwhile Mahama administration for being corrupt and having mismanaged the country, appears to be turning the heat on the Akufo-Addo administration.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Tf76nUjzUzyPgSA3EvJ8ynKfcLPtGPzk”]He has thus called for a constitutional direction to streamline the size of Government in the country, since in his view, a large size government contributes to corruption.

The NPP government has been severely accused following Nana Addo’s appointment of 110 ministers of state, the largest in the country’s history.

The outspoken bishop warned that those NPP appointees who have begun showing signs of corruption, will soon be exposed.

Professor Martey was speaking at a Public Lecture on the Corruption menace in Ghana, organized by the Christian Service University College(CSUC) in Kumasi.

He said Government must prioritize issues of corruption and ensure a vigorous fight against the menace if positive results are to be seen.

“A large Government means large corruption. So we should have a constitutional direction. NPP and corruption, I said clearly that what has been proven, the NPP appointees have begun showing signs of corruption”.

He cited the recent happenings at the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), and urged the President to ensure issues about corruption under his administration are dealt with.

The NPP government has so far found itself in two cases of alleged corruption, with the recent one being the allegations of corruption against two deputy chiefs of staff, by musician and NPP sympathizer Kwame A-Plus, as well as the perceived corruption in the sale of contaminated fuel involving BOST.

There has also been perceived corruption in government’s handling of the Ameri Power Deal, in which the same firm that was being questioned over a supposed bloated contract, sponsored a committee from Ghana to Dubai to hold discussions with them.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, was also accused of cronyism by the minority in one of government’s bond issue. Another major scandal, which many were unhappy with, was the allegations of corruption leveled against Boakye Agyarko, now Energy Minister during his vetting.

He was accused by some minority MPs of seeking to bribe them to enable him sail through his vetting with ease. The matter was later investigated by parliament, but the accusers were supposedly unable to prove their claims.

The lecture, on the theme: “Institutional Corruption in Ghana: Causes and Effects” brought other dignitaries including; the outgoing Managing Director of the Graphic Communications Group, Ken Ashigbey, and the General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Dr. Opuni Frimpong.

Mr. Ashigbey, who spoke on ‘The Efficacy of Anti-corruption measures in Ghana: What is missing and the way Forward’, said corruption is purely “thievery” and must not be glorified.

He wants political parties to publish their sources of funding used for electioneering campaigns.

He also called for the quick passage of the Right to Information (RTI) Bill and a reformation of the Asset Declaration Act.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, and the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), say they are close to finding the persons who forged the signature of Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister of Energy and Petroleum, to acquire an oil block.

Prosper Agblor, Director–General in charge of the CID, who confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, said  that one Charles Andoh, a former employee of Miura Petroleum Limited (MPL), has admitted to the Police that he forged the signatures of both the Minister and the Managing Director of MPL.

Commissioner of Police (COP) Agblor said Andoh is on Police Enquiry Bail, but has not been reporting himself to the Police since he was granted bail on April 17.

As a result, Andoh’s sureties have been ordered to produce him on the date fixed for his appearance in court, that is, Wednesday, May 28, or face the consequences.

Narrating the circumstances leading to the forgery, the CID Boss said, in December last year, MPL, a company which is into oil exploration and development in the country, applied to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum for exploration and development site, in respect of Offshore Cape Three Points Oil Block.

The company was denied, but was asked to re-apply for another block. While awaiting the re-application, there emerged online publications in Offshore Energy, Today, and Petroleum Africa Magazines, that the Ministry had exclusively united a Canadian Oil Company, Gondwana Oil Company, to take up the Offshore Cape Three Points Oil Block.

The CID Director–General said the publication was found to be false, and investigation revealed it was actuated by letters allegedly forged on the letterheads of both the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, and the MPL, and forwarded to Gondwana Oil Company.

The suspected forged letters had signature purported to be those of the Energy Minister and the MD of MPL and according to COP Agblor, both personalities have denied any knowledge of the letters.

In a prèss release dated April 10, the Ministry denied having invited MPL for any negotiation over any block in Ghana’s Sedimentary Basins.

The statement recounted that on December 23 last year, MPL submitted an application for an exploration and production license over the Offshore Cape Three Points South Block.

It said, unfortunately for MPL, at the time of submitting the application, evaluation of earlier applications for the block, had been completed, and a decision taken, and so MPL’s application was not processed for formal evaluation.

The statement said, the Ministry in a letter dated January 19 this year, informed MPL of the unavailability of its area of interest, and therefore requested the company to re-direct the application to any available open block for consideration.

With respect to Gondwana, the statement pointed out that the Ministry has never had any engagements with it, and therefore has no record of it.

Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of MPL has been arrested and granted  bail by EOCO, after intensive interrogation, because EOCO believes that he has questions to answer.

The Accra Central Magistrate Court presided over by Her Worship, Mavis Kwanioo has adjourned hearing of the case involving Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Bull Haus entertainment, Lawrence Nana Esiama Hanson also known as Bulldog and the state to June 2, 2014.

The court however, remanded Bulldog in police custody.

State Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Senkyi told the court on Monday that Mr. Asiama Hanson on November 26, 2012, had a confrontation with Fennec [the deceased] during a programme at the Accra International Conference Centre dubbed “Night with the Stars”.

According to the Inspector, investigations showed Bulldog subsequently had a confrontation with the deceased, Fennec Okyere on  an entertainment discussion programme on Peace FM.

“After the programme, Bulldog called Fennec and threatened to send his boys after him to teach him a lesson and to get rid of him,” the Chief Inspector told the court.

He went on to narrate that there were also a series of threatening voice calls and text messages from unknown persons believed to be agents of the suspect [ Bulldog].

According to Chief Inspector, police investigations also established that on March 12, 2014, Fennec received a call from an unknown caller.

The prosecution based on his narration  prayed the court to remand the suspect to allow the police continue with their investigations.

But the lawyer for the defendant, Gary Nimako said the case against his client is not enough reason to keep him in police custody.

In March, 2014, Fennec Okyere was stabbed to death by some unknown assailants in  his residence.

He was the manager of hi life musician, Kwaw Kesse.

Private legal practitioner, Kwame Akuffo says the basis for the arrest of Lawrence Nana Asiama Hanson (Bulldog) as the prime suspect in the murder of Fennec Okyere is untenable.

The Police Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) on Thursday arrested the manager of dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale and CEO of Bull Haus Entertainment, Bulldog as ”prime suspect” in investigations of the murder of Fennec.

But lawyer Akuffo on Eyewitness News said it is wrong for the police to tag Mr. Hanson as a suspect.

”I dont think that the gentleman [ Bulldog] should be a suspect at this stage. I think that the gentleman is only a person of interest at this stage,” he said.

The Police say they arrested Bulldog on the basis of threatening text messages he purportedly sent to  the deceased.

“Text messages on its own do not amount to anything, whiles it may be the basis to begin to investigate that person [ Bulldog]. It does not necessary transcend the person into a suspect,” lawyer Akuffo explained.

He noted that unless the police can connect Bulldog to the scene of the crime by a forensic test or by conspiracy [in the sense that some third party is arrested and they mention the name of Bulldog], ”you have nothing”.

Aside the threatening text messages, Bulldog is alleged to have also threatened the deceased openly on live radio but Lawyer Akuffo said: ”Because the gentleman made this statement does not make him a suspect. Those statements cannot convict Bulldog, it cannot even sustain a criminal trial” adding that such statements are ”bragging” statements.

He advised the Police to rather see Bulldog as a person of interest, ”and begin to find out whether they can connect him to the trial instead.”

He accused the Police of adopting a lazy attitude towards the investigations adding that, the logic the Police is operating with means, ”when a man is murdered, all his enemies or perceived enemies must be arrested”.

”A mere text statement does not connect the person to murder; its lazy work from the Police to make such assumption,” he reiterated.

Fennec Okyere was killed at his Manet Gardens residence on the Spintex Road, Accra on Thursday, March 13 by unknown assailants.

He died at age 31 and left behind a wife and a son.
