Pro New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth group in Tamale, the Kandahar Boys, have dismissed media reports that they vandalized proprieties of the Saganarigu district assembly complex in the Northern Region.

Some irate NPP youth in protest against the District Chief Executive, Mariam Iddrisu, damaged properties of the assembly complex.

Media reports attributed the dastardly act to the  Kandahar Boys group because some of them were spotted at the assembly complex same day.

But the group’s Secretary, Iddrisu Abdul Hack, in a Citi News interview dismissed the claims and called for responsible journalism.

According to him, the group members went there to inquire about the mode of selection of caterers for the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) in the district.

He said majority of women in the area raised concerns about discrimination and cronyism associated with the selection of the caterers, hence the group’s visit for inquiry.

He served notice that the group will not tolerate personal decisions by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Executives in the region that will make the NPP government unpopular.

Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Yussif Tanko, said the police have begun investigations to apprehend the perpetrators.

He also rejected claims that the Kandahar Boys were responsible for that unruly conduct, asking that the appropriate authorities should be allowed to conclude their investigation into the matter.

The Northern Regional Minister, Salifu Saeed, has finally unlocked the office of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

Dr. Prosper Akambong’s office has for the past one week been under lock and key by a vigilante group affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kandahar Boys.

The Kandahar Boys’ action followed other pressure group’s call for Dr. Prosper Akambong’s removal from office.

This happened when Salifu Saeed was not inducted into office as regional Minister. The regional Minister on Tuesday February 28, 2017,  visited the Tamale Teaching Hospital and unlocked the CEO’s office.

He condemned the nationwide post election violence, and impressed upon members of pressure groups in the region to use the appropriate administrative structures to address their grievances.

He unequivocally served notice that the Nana Addo-Bawumia led NPP administration will not tolerate lawlessness. Salifu Saeed assured the hospital management of cordial relations to improve efficiency at the major health referral facility.

Dr. Prosper Akambong thanked the regional Minister for his intervention. He dispelled allegations of corruption, nepotism and selective justice leveled against him, and assured government of competent leadership.

Tamale Metropolitan YEA secretariat

The regional Minister also opened the Tamale Metropolitan Secretariat of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) at Choggu, Hilltop.

He reiterated the need for some aggrieved youth groups affiliated to the governing NPP to desist from locking state institutions. Salifu Saeed promised to administer the region in line with the government’s transformational agenda.

Background

It would be recalled that the Kandahar Boys’ Secretary, Iddris Abdul Hack, on Tuesday February 21, 2017, masterminded the closure of Dr. Akambong’s office.

He revealed that, the group’s action foiled other NPP youth group’s intention to picket at the hospital premises, Wednesday February 22. Iddris Abdul Hack reaffirmed his group’s commitment to zealously protect the hospital.

Northern Young Patriots demand

The Northern Young Patriots earlier at a news conference, also demanded the immediate dismissal of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Prosper Akambong.

The group’s Chairman, Bashiru Baba, insinuated that Dr. Akambong was superintending over corruption, nepotism and abuse of human rights of staff.

He further claimed Dr. Prosper Akambong reduced the major referral health facility to a death trap.

Bashiru Baba called for forensic audit of the hospital’s accounts and the establishment of a bipartisan committee to investigate the allegations leveled against the CEO and his surrogates.

The Northern Regional Police Command has called on clients and staff of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), who were allegedly assaulted by a pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) to come forward and identify their alleged attackers.

The Pro-NPP group, the Kandahar Boys, raided and locked up offices of the NHIA and the YEA in Tamale, and reports indicate that some persons were injured during the incident.

The police have since unlocked the offices but have made no arrests yet.

In an interview with Citi News, ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, condemned the actions of the group, and called on individuals to assist their investigations.

“Some of these actions are actions that are against the law, and some of the methods they are using are also crude. They are attacking and beating some of the workers there as they are alleging,” he said.

“I must say that we will look into the matter and if the persons who allege they have been attacked can identify those persons who came there and did what they did to them, they must agree to assist the police to investigate the matter.”

Kandahar boys deny assault claims

Meanwhile, the Kandahar Boys in an earlier interview with Citi News, insisted that they did not steal from the offices or assault any individual.

“We went to the office and asked the staff to come out for us to lock the gates. So we locked the gates, but we did not steal anything. Everything that was in the office before is still in it, and no one was beaten and nothing was taken from the office,” the Secretary of the group, Idris Abdul said.

He also justified the actions of his group saying they were only following the example of some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, who he said engaged in similar actions after the 2008 elections when their party assumed office.

“We were taught that by the NDC; that if your people are in power and people are not in your favour, you have to sack them because they are in opposition and they will try to do whatever they can do to sabotage your government.”

Police in the Northern Region have unlocked the offices of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), in Tamale, after they were locked up on Friday by pro-New Patriotic Party (NPP) group, the Kandahar Boys.

The group on Friday walked out staff and clients of the agencies, and locked up the gates of the offices. Reports say some of the staff were manhandled leaving them with injuries.

ASP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, confirmed the incident to Citi News, and denied some reports that some police officers may have been in collusion with the Kandahar Boys.

“The police did not accompany those people who went there to lock up the offices. What happened was that we detailed some officers there following what happened previously. But when the people came there, the numbers were more than the officers that were there. There were about only two officers who were stationed there.”

He indicated that, additional police had been called in when the situation got out of hand, but not before the group managed to lock up the gates of the offices.

“They called for reinforcement so the reinforcement went to the place; but when we got there, they had with their numbers managed to put some padlocks on the offices. We subsequently called some of the workers and had the padlocks removed.”

ASP Tetteh further called on affected persons to lodge official complaints to the police.

“If anybody suffered any form of attack, the best thing for the person to do is make an official complaint to the police,” he stated.
