Ghanaian actress and film producer, Juliet Asante, has launched a project to build container libraries and stock them with books in various communities in Ghana.

The initiative, dubbed Yaa Asantewaa Library project, is mobilizing Ghc1 and $1 donations from the public to fund it.

She said the goal is to have at least one library in every district in the country to promote reading.

Juliet Asante said every child deserves the right to read a book, and she is determined to give Ghanaian children that opportunity to “travel the world through books.”

An online crowdfunding campaign has been initiated on Indiegogo to receive support from the public for the project.

“Every child deserves the right to enjoy the pleasure of reading regularly…It is that simple, and you can help make that happen now,” she said.

She said the project is presently working to stock a community library in the Upper East Nyokoko district and the new Juabeng area in the Ashanti Region.

The project is being coordinated online at Library Project GH and yaaasantewalibraryproject.org’. Donations can be made on Indiegogo by clicking here.

Juliet Asante, one of Ghana’s celebrated film makers, has said that the answer to the woes of the movie industry is not about collating signatures.

Her statement was in response to the recent campaign by Yvonne Nelson for stakeholders in the film industry to sign a petition to be presented to the government over the ills that are gradually eating the sector up.

In an interview with KMJ on Hitz FM’s ‘Daybreak Hitz’, Juliet Asante commended Yvonne for the good step but added that the collation of signatures is for mere showmanship.

“I don’t believe in signatures. It is for showmanship and I understand because this is show business but we must attack the real issues. Signing signatures is not the solution to our problems,” she said.

Juliet also intimated that money is not the only thing needed to make the film industry thrive. According to her, there must also be the right policies to help propel the vehicle of production in the Ghanaian film industry.

Juliet Asante is the Founding President of the Black Star Film Festival whose second edition was recently held in Accra, Ghana.

The Black Star International Film Festival has signed a deal with film agency and distribution company, Mobilefliks.

The deal is aimed at opening up opportunities for films entering the Film Festival, as a development to synchronise with BSIFF’s focus on the ‘Business of Film.’

The Executive Director of BSIFF, Juliet Asante, said that with the deal, filmmakers can now meet with distribution companies.

“When I attend a film festival as a filmmaker, I don’t just do it for fun, I am keen on getting distribution interest in my film – for me, that is a clear goal when I adopt the strategy of attending film festivals as part of my film marketing or distribution plan. This is one of the differentiation of the Black Star International Film Festival on the continent.”

“Filmmakers can look forward to either meeting distributors personally or getting their films viewed by distribution companies with the hope that your film may be picked up.”

Mobilefliks works with some key film distribution companies in the world, as well as some airlines and telecommunication companies to distribute content. It was also a sponsor of the BSIFF 2016.

About BSIFF

The Black Star International Film Festival is a film forum, advocacy platform and a bridge between the local and international film industry with a focus on the business of film.

It was launched in Accra in February 2016, with the festival taking place in August.
