The Presidential candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Convention People’s Party’s Ivor Greenstreet, and Jacob Osei Yeboah [JOY], an independent candidate, are the only persons who have been qualified by the Electoral Commission, to contest this year’s presidential elections.

The four were cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday [October 10], after their nomination forms were vetted out of the lot.

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei said the candidates had qualified after meeting “the requirements of the electoral laws”.

She made the declaration at a press conference at the EC’s Head Office in Accra, following the closing of payment of filing fees by the presidential and parliamentary candidates of the various parties.

This means that, twelve presidential aspirants, will not be contesting in the elections because according to the EC, all the parties failed to meet certain critical requirements in the filling of the forms.

Ayariga’s APC, PPP, PNC others disqualified from 2016 polls

The thirteen disqualified parties include Hassan Ayariga’s All Progressive Congress (APC), the People’s National Convention (PNC), and the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

All the parties were supposed to submit their filing fees by midday today [Monday], after an Accra High court dismissed an injunction suit filed by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in protest against the fees.

The other disqualified parties are the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), the Independent People’s Party (IPP) led by Kofi Akpalu, Democratic People’s Party (DPP), led by Ward Brew, Akua’s Donkor’s Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), and the Reformed Patriotic Democrats (RPD), led by Kwabena Adjei.

Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings’ National Democratic Party (NDP), has also been disqualified for the second time. An Independent Candidate, Alfred Asiedu Kwame Walker, has also been disqualified.

Her announcement means that, barring any new development, only four individuals will have their photos printed on the ballot papers on the election day.

They are Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party, and Jacob Osei Yeboah, an independent candidate.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Flagbearer, President John Mahama’s visit to Yeji in the Brong Ahafo region has seen him tout the strides his government has made in building a robust economy.

In an address to the chiefs and people of Yeji in the Pru-East constituency on his campaign tour, President Mahama said the NDC government has done all it needs to sustain the economy and because of this, “a lot of investors have reposed confidence in our economy. The Cedi has also been stabilised.”

He also noted the decreasing inflation rates and cited the recent Moody’s rating as proof of the strides made in the last four years.

“Apart from this, Moody’s rating some two weeks ago also showed that our economy is robust. They said we have moved from a negative rank to a stable one,” the President said.

Pru East being the constituency of a former Power Minister, Kwabena Donkor, who ended up resigning in December 2015 because of the power crisis, President Mahama also took time to speak about how he handled the power situation.

“I am not one that pushes the blame on others. That has been the tradition of previous governments, to apportion blame but I will not do this. I will rather take the responsibility to fix the problem.”

President Mahama however said the Country’s power situation had seen an upturn of fortunes saying that, “if you critique the situation properly, Ghana’s power issues have stabilised and we have more to use and we will still export the excess to our neighboring countries.”
