Police in South Africa have foiled an attempt to smuggle a stolen luxury car into Zimbabwe using donkeys to pull it across the Limpopo river.

The suspects fled into the bushes towards Zimbabwe after their efforts to free the car from the sand failed, local police say.

Last December a vehicle stolen in Durban was recovered on the same river, attached to a group of donkeys.

Local police are investigating whether a syndicate is behind the new practice.

Police Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says a Mercedez Benz C220 was recovered on the river bed close to Musina.

The thieves had put metal sheets under the wheels to make it easier for the donkeys to pull.

“The suspects were using donkeys to pull the car across the river‚ but our members were just in time to pounce on them after the donkeys were apparently no longer able to pull it through the sand,” Mr Mojapelo is quoted in local media as saying.

The donkeys were unharmed.

It is not clear why the thieves do not simply driver the car into Zimbabwe but the BBC’s Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg notes that one reason might be that most modern cars are fitted with a tracking device which uses satellite tracking to locate a vehicle, if stolen. The tracker is only active when the car is running.

The Limpopo River forms the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe and is a well known transit point for illegal immigrants moving between both countries but the news of it becoming a smuggling point for cars is a surprise development, our correspondent says.

At least two people have been killed and 17 injured in a crush at South Africa’s biggest stadium, football officials say.

It took place during the Soweto derby between football clubs Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in Johannesburg.

Orlando Pirates said the crush happened when people attempted to push their way through the gates into the 87,000-capacity FNB stadium.

Authorities allowed the pre-season cup game to continue.

Public safety official Michael Sun said on Twitter that all gates at the stadium had been opened to ensure crowd control and that the situation was later brought under control.

Of the 17 injured, one is in a critical condition, the stadium managers said.

Reuters said live television coverage of the match, which Kaizer Chiefs won 1-0, showed no obvious disturbance.

The stadium served as the venue for Nelson Mandela’s first speech after his release from prison in 1990, and is where the memorial for Mr Mandela was held in 2013.

It was rebuilt for the 2010 football World Cup, where it was known as Soccer City and hosted the final between Spain and the Netherlands.

In April 2001, 43 supporters died in a crush during another match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg.

And 10 years before that, 42 people died in a crush between the same two teams at the Oppenheimer Stadium in the city of Orkney.

Ghana’s refreshing lifestyle dial and tourism inclined radio station, Citi FM, will in the next eleven days hang out with some of its discerning listeners in Mauritius and Johannesburg on a tour of the two countries.

Dubbed #BigJulyGetAway, the trip is a leisure travel experience to Port Louis and Johannesburg in Mauritius, and South Africa respectively, and will take place from 23rd to 30th July 2017.

The one-week leisure trip seeks to broaden the knowledge base of Ghanaian tourists with regards to the historical experiences of the two countries.

Citi FM organizes such trips locally and internationally.

In 2016, the station organized the Robben Island Experience to South Africa.

A Client Service Executive at Citi FM, Ranstina Yankey, explained the unique tourism experiences that patrons will be exposed to in South Africa and Mauritius.

“Last year (2016), our first International trip was dubbed Robben Island Experience where we took participants to Cape Town in South Africa. This year (2017) in January, we took business people and interested participants to Kigali to learn the success story of the country, Rwanda. This July we have what we call #BigJulyGetAway. It’s two destinations for the price of one—taking participants to Mauritius and South Africa. We have close to 40 people joining us to Mauritius and South Africa and the excitement is a lot.”

“We are looking forward to an exciting trip this year, something big, something special from your number one station, Citi FM,” she added.
