The trial of an immigration officer, who allegedly defrauded a Sunyani-based teacher of  GHC 31,000.00 commenced on Tuesday at the Sunyani  Magistrate Court ‘A’ presided over by  Mr Jojo Hagan.

The accused, Justice Amissah-Baiden, 39, stationed at Aflao in the Volta Region made his fourth appearance before the court on a charge of defrauding by false pretense.

The case was however adjourned to Tuesday, July 27, 2017.

Amissah-Baiden pleaded not guilty to the charge in his first appearance on January 11, 2017 but was granted bail by the court in the sum of GHC 50,000.00.

Chief Inspector John A. Kwachie, the Prosecutor had earlier told the court that the accused took the amount through his account with the number 70110101156807 at the Ghana Commercial Bank, Sunyani main branch from the complainant, one Stephen Elolo with the pretext of giving him three saloon cars, two Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Corolla in 2012.

He said the accused who was then stationed at the Brong-Ahafo Regional office of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in Sunyani brought one Mercedes Benz vehicle with the registration number GT5141-12 but was intercepted by a patrol team of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority that it did not have proper documents.

Chief Inspector Kwachie said when accused was informed about the incident, he promised to make proper documentations to cover it and also ensure that the other two vehicles would be delivered to the complainant.

But the accused failed to fulfill his promise and was not even heard of again until complainant later learnt of his transfer to Aflao, the Prosecutor said.

He said efforts to reach the accused through phone by the complaint proved futile and complainant reported the matter to the Sunyani Police for investigations.

Chief Inspector Kwachie said the Police then sent a letter to the authorities of GIS at Aflao to produce accused person to assist in their investigations in an alleged fraud case and was consequently arraigned before the court.

A murderess who took a selfie with the dead body of her father-in-law after she stabbed him to death has explained the sickening move, saying: ‘It was just something that made me really happy’.

Amanda Taylor murdered Charles Taylor in April 2015, by stabbing him repeatedly at his home in Ellett, Virginia.

She was sentenced to life in prison for the gruesome attack which she carried out after her husband Rex took his own life in August 2014.

Amanda, a 26-year-old mother-of-two, showed no remorse as she was jailed.

Two years on, she is still unrepentant, telling Crime Watch Daily via a phone interview from the prison: ‘I have absolutely no remorse for what I did to Charlie Taylor at all. I did exactly what I wanted to do.’

Amanda maintains that she killed her father-in-law in revenge for her husband’s suicide which she blames on him.

‘I just wanted him to feel the pain I felt. That’s the most alive I’ve felt since Rex died,’ she said.

On April 4, she attacked the 59-year-old in his home with a bayonet-style knife.

Describing the killing during the prison phone interview, she said: ‘I was very happy, I was very happy just to finally get all that built-up hate and anger and all those feelings out on him.

‘When I stabbed him I didn’t see anything and he just looked at me and he was like “what are you doing?” and as I was stabbing him, he had reached up and got my hair.

‘I continued to stab him but he kept yelling and it made me nervous so Sean took the crowbar, the tire iron or whatever, and hit him in the back of the head.’

‘Sean’ is Sean Ball, her accomplice who she later turned on while on the run from police.

After murdering Charles, Amanda posed for a disturbing selfie with his body and the knife she used to slaughter him.

‘I was just really excited and I was like hey I’m gonna take a picture so I can post it and show everyone. It was just something that I, it made me really happy,’ she continued.

Despite having an obsession with murder, she said she was surprised by the overwhelming sense of freedom she felt after carrying out the killing.

‘It was very different than what I had in mind. It’s not what you see in the movies.

‘All the nerves and the feeling of like freedom and that’s how I felt,’ she said.

Amanda also revealed that she tried to contact ISIS before her arrest but that she never received a response.

She nonetheless insists she did not want to join the terror group with which she had a ‘weird obsession’.

‘I wasn’t trying to join ISIS. I wasn’t going to go blow anything up in the name of, you know. I had this weird obsession with it for a minute and I tried to reach out but obviously nothing happened from it,’ she said.

Crime Watch Daily also obtained a copy of one of the first police interviews she gave after being arrested.

During the interview, she described how she’d aimed for her father-in-law’s chest while stabbing him and revealed that she barely got any blood on her own clothes because the knife was so long.

Sean Ball was jailed last year for 60 years after admitting second-degree murder.

Rex Taylor hung himself in August 2014. He had been using drugs which his widow believes his father introduced him to as a teenager.

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded  Seidu Mahama, a Land guard on the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery.

Seidu, was said to have conspired with three others now at large and robbed a couple of their personal belongings including monies on January 25, at Bortianor in Accra.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges but was remanded by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh to reappear on February 27.

The facts of the case as presented by Superintendent Kweku Bampah are that the complainants are Albert Allotey and Irene Adubea Parker Allotey, a couple residing in their private apartment at Bortianor Red Top, whilst the accused person is a land guard at the same area.

He said on January 25, at about 1830 hours four masked men all armed with AK 47 and pistols broke into their house amidst assaults and threats of death on them.

They succeeded in robbing Albert of his sea blue Honda CRV Saloon car , 42-inch flat screen television set, one Hisence 28-inch flat screen, one multi TV decoder, one DSTV decoder, one Hoofer sound system unit , five assorted mobile phones  and an amount of Ghc550.00.

Superintendent Bempah said, the accused persons and his accomplices further robbed Irene of her blue Toyota Corolla and assorted jewelries worth Ghc5,000.00 and bolted.

He told the court that a report was made to the police and investigations led to the arrest of the accused person per his black Honda Saloon car which was used to attack the complainant’s house.

He said the same car which was used to escort the stolen cars out of the complainant’s house was identified by a witness who saw the unusual quick movement of the complainant’s two vehicles from their house.

The prosecution said the police traced the identity of the Honda Saloon to the house of the accused person at Bortianor and he admitted ownership of the vehicle and was arrested.

On January 31, the Regional crime office organised an identification parade where Albert identified the accused person as being part of the gang that came to his house to rob them.

A Driver, Bright Arma who robbed one Sandrich Mensah of her Galaxy S5 mobile phone worth GHc 1,000.00, one Nokia Lumia mobile phone worth Ghc80.00 and an amount of GHc 300.00 has been sentenced to 17 years imprisonment.

Bright who was put before an Accra Circuit Court pleaded guilty to the charge of robbery, and was convicted on his own plea.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh in sentencing said the court took into consideration the mitigating factor including the five days already spent in custody.

He said the court also considered the fact that the convict failed to respect the calm nature of the victim but subjected her to hardship and pain.

“The accused person is hereby sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment in hard labour”.

Earlier the prosecuting officer Superintendent Bempah told the court that the complainant was an unemployed man who lives at Abossey-Okai Zongo, while Bright, a taxi driver, resides at Gbawe.

He said on January 28, at about 0100 hours, the Charlie Swat 8’ police patrol team while on patrols at Weija area spotted the complainant running and screaming for help.

The prosecutor told the court that the police patrol team rushed to the scene and rescued her from the convict.

He said investigation disclosed that the complainant charted the accused person’s taxi with registration No. GS 5927-13 Kia Rio to Tuba, and on reaching Ayigbe Town junction near the toll booth, Bright stopped and parked the car at the side of the road.

Superintendent Bempah said Bright pulled out a Fanta lemon plastic bottle containing powdered pepper mixed with water and sprayed it into the eyes of the complainant.

He said the convict then attacked the complainant and collected one Glaxy S5 and one Nokia Lumia mobile phones and cash of GHC 300.00. He pulled her out of the car and continued to chase her away until police heard the complainant screaming and rushed to rescue her.

He told the court that during interrogation, the convict admitted the offence in his investigation caution statement and led police to the scene of crime.

Israeli husbands who refuse to grant a Jewish religious divorce to their wives can now be indicted and face stiff prison sentences, the justice ministry has said.

After years of rabbinate control of religious divorces, the ministry said the judiciary was going to get involved in order to “liberate” women.

Hundreds or even thousands of women in Israel have been prevented from rebuilding their lives as they require the permission of their husbands to get a divorce.

In Israel, only a rabbinical court can seal a marriage or divorce, as civil marriage does not exist.

The ministry issued an order for the civil judiciary to prosecute men who refuse to grant permission for divorce — through what is known as a “get” — after a rabbinical court orders it.

The directive also applies to women.

Without a “get”, a woman is known in Hebrew as “agunot” and remains bound to her husband and unable to remarry.

If she has a child with another man, he will be considered a “bastard” who will never be able to marry, under Jewish law.

There are currently 131 such women in Israel for an average of 11,000 divorces of Jewish couples each year, according to the director of rabbinical courts, Shimon Yaakobi.

But this figure is only a tally of women for whom religious justice has ordered the husband to accept divorce.

Aliza Gellis, head of the Yad L’isha centre that provides legal aid to women stuck in hopeless marriages, said her organisation gets 6,000 requests for assistance each year.

There are also a few rare cases of men who are “chained” because their wives refuse to issue a “get”.

“When a rabbinical court decides to force the man to give the get or the woman to receive it, it is necessary to envisage the opening of a criminal investigation against the recalcitrant person and to charge him if need be,” said the ministry.

“He who refuses to give the get deprives his wife of her freedom and prevents her from rebuilding her life,” it said in a statement.

Faced with recalcitrant cases, rabbinical courts can seize driving licences, issue bans on travel abroad or block bank accounts.

They also have the power to imprison men in exceptional cases, although the civil justice system can intervene.

South Africa’s embattled President Jacob Zuma has said he is not scared of going to prison, days after an investigation found evidence of possible government corruption.

This was his first public appearance since an anti-corruption report asked for a judicial inquiry.

Mr Zuma, 74, is accused of an improper relationship with wealthy businessmen. He denies any wrongdoing.

Thousands of people took to the streets on Wednesday demanding his resignation.

The 355-page report entitled State of Capture focused on allegations that Mr Zuma allowed the Guptas, a wealthy Indian business family close to the president, to influence cabinet appointments.

The Gupta brothers have not commented, but they have previously denied any wrongdoing.

  • The Guptas and their links to Zuma
  • South Africa’s corruption crusader

Mr Zuma, who spent 10 years as a political prisoner on Robben Island with Nelson Mandela during apartheid (white minority rule), told a cheering crowd in his home province of Kwa-Zulu Natal: “I’m not afraid of jail. I’ve been to jail during the struggle.

“There’s no longer any space for democratic debate. The only space there is for court arguments by lawyers. That’s not democracy,” he added.

Mr Zuma, who is also the leader of the governing African National Congress (ANC), has been dogged by corruption allegations for more than a decade. He had tried to block the release of the report, but dropped his court bid.

He faces a vote of no confidence in parliament next week. He survived two similar votes earlier this year.

A trader, Rebecca Brome, was on Thursday granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court when she appeared before it for defrauding two persons of various sums of money.

Rebecca was granted a self-recognisance bail by the court presided over by Madam Mary N. A Aryee.

She is to deposit an amount of GH₵ 13,000.00, with the court registrar, deposit her passport to the police and alert them anytime she intends to travel.

She was said to have defrauded one Theophilus Anyan of  GH₵ 7, 000.00 and Prosper Segbawu of GH₵ 6,250.00.

Prosecuting Superintendent of Police, Kweku Bempah told the court that the complainant Theophilus is a trader living at Asamankese and Prosper is a carpenter living at Anloga, while the accused person is a pensioner living in the United Kingdom.

He said in 2013, the accused person collected the above mentioned amounts from the complainants under the pretext of securing a United Kingdom visa for them at Odorkor.

He told the court that the accused person on receipt of the money failed to honour her promise and went back to the United Kingdom.

Superintendent Bempah said a report was made to the police.

On September 30, the complainants spotted the accused in town and arrested her to the police.

The prosecution told the court that in her caution statement, Rebecca stated that she used part of the money in processing the forms for the complainants.

A Tarkwa circuit court has sentenced three persons to 12 years imprisonment each, for robbery.

The convicts, Albert Kobbina Sam, a driver, Yaw Frimpong, illegal miner and Richmond Ababio, aluminium fabricator apprentice, were convicted on their own pleas.

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Valentine Akposu, told the court that, the complainant, Ernest Adjei Weridu, is a supervisor at the Bogoso branch of Total fuel station, whilst the convicts are residents of Yamoransa, Wasa Saa and Wasa Gyapa in the Central and Western regions.

He said on July 23 around 9:30 pm, the complainant’s driver, John Arthur, who operates from Tarkwa to Bogoso with a taxi was at the Bogoso lorry station waiting for passengers to Tarkwa when Sam, Frimpong and Ababio boarded the vehicle under the pretext of going to Bogoso.

ASP Akposu said when they arrived at Bogoso, the convicts asked the driver to convey them to Bawdie and on their way, Sam pointed a knife at him and he and his accomplices dragged him to the back seat, gagged him and tied his legs and hands with a rope, whilst Frimpong drove the vehicle.

He said when Frimpong got to Bawdie, he drove to Adonoi road through to Dunkwa and abandoned Arthur in a nearby bush.

A hunter, who was returning from his farm rescued the driver and rushed him to the Bogoso health centre, where he was treated and discharged.

The Prosecutor said Arthur narrated the incident to the complainant and he reported the case to the police.

The Prosecution said thereafter, the offenders proceeded to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and had the stolen taxi re-sprayed.

ASP Akposu said on July 31, Sam and Frimpong returned to Ayanfuri with the cab and sold it to one Kobina Gyasi for GH¢ 18,000, who made a part payment of GH¢ 5,000.

The two promised to bring the documents covering the vehicle for the remaining balance.

ASP Akposu said Mr Gyasi reported Sam and Frimpong to the police as he suspected the vehicle was stolen.

On August 3, the Prosecutor said Frimpong presented a new number plate, insurance and a road worthy certificate to enable him collect the balance, but he was arrested by the police.

He assisted the police to apprehend his accomplices.

The Winneba District Magistrate Court has sentenced a 28-year mason to 18 months imprisonment with hard labour for unlawful damage, unlawful entry and stealing items valued GHC 2,305.00 belonging to a man whose name was given as King Aluta in Winneba.

The convict, Kwabena Ebo, a native of Winneba, pleaded guilty to all the three counts.

The court presided over by Mr Alexander Oworae sentenced him on his own plea to run consecutively.

Police Inspector Peter Agbelie told the Court that the complainant of the case is Samuel Kow Amankwandor, a taxi driver and a native of Winneba.

He said on September 4, 2016 at about 8:45pm,  the accused went into the house of King Aluta at Sankro, a suburb of Winneba, broke into his room and dishonestly appropriated two double bed mattresses.

Inspector Agbelie said while conveying the items, he was seen by the complainant from a distance and unknown to the accused that he had been seen by the complainant, went into the room for the third time to pick a table top fridge and this time he was caught red-handed by the complainant who handed him over to police patrol team in the area.

The prosecution said the accused led the police to the bush where he hid one of the mattresses.

The accused also informed the police that the second mattress was being kept in the home of one Abeiku who also lived in the Sankro Community.

After investigations, the accused was arraigned before the court charged with the offences, the prosecution said.

Zimbabweans risk imprisonment for abusing the national flag, the authorities have warned in the wake of anti-government protests.

Those who bring it into disrepute face a $200 (£154) fine and/or six months in jail, the justice ministry said.

Nobody is allowed to sell the flag without prior permission from the ministry, its statement added.

The flag is being used as a symbol of the calls for change by protesters under the #ThisFlag movement.

It was started in April by a pastor who wrapped a flag around his neck and in a video posted on Facebook calling for Zimbabweans who were fed up with the perceived mismanagement of the country to stand up for themselves.

Evan Mawarire’s social-media movement backed a stay-away campaign in July, the biggest strike action since 2005.

Evan Mawarire has used videos on social media to drum up support

He was accused of attempting to overthrow the government but a court dismissed the charges.

At his court appearance he was draped in the flag, as were many of his supporters.

He since fled the country and is currently in New York where he posted a video on Facebook on Tuesday, again wearing the flag around his neck, protesting outside the UN headquarters. President Robert Mugabe is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly.

‘Total insanity’

Over the last month there have been several anti-government protests with people wrapping themselves in the Zimbabwe flag – and the police have now banned marches in the capital, Harare, until mid-October.

Demonstrators in August were protesting against a plan to introduce bond as an unofficial currency

“Members of the public who engage in any action or activity, which involves the manufacture, sale or use of the national flag in contravention of the law are therefore warned that they are liable to prosecution and are liable to imprisonment if they are found guilty by a court of law,” Justice Ministry official Virginia Mabiza said in a statement.

Promise Mkwananzi, the leader of young activists who protest under the banner Tajamuka, meaning “we strongly disagree”, dismissed the warning.

“It is total insanity that government should ban citizens from using their own flag. We are going to continue to make use of our flag. It is our identity,” he told the Reuters news agency.
