The flagbearer of the Independent People’s Party (IPP), Kofi Akpaloo is awaiting the investigative report from the Ghana Police Service before taking legal action against the Electoral Commission following his disqualification from this year’s presidential race.

The Electoral Commission rejected the nomination of the IPP flagbearer over allegations that some persons who endorsed his candidature also subscribed to other nominees.

The commission subsequently forwarded the case to the Police for further investigations.

Meanwhile, Kofi Akpaloo had together with his indicted supporters gone to the Police station to defend themselves.

[contextly_sidebar id=”bUfgvo3jXFEjetAHIKKos2tnwhxSrttS”]Speaking on Eyewitness News Mr. Akpaloo said he is hopeful the Police report would exonerate him.

“The EC didn’t do its work well because I expected them to have invited the people first when they found out the anomaly and question them as to how they signed for me and another person or better still they could have called we the candidates to find out why same people signing for us with different signatures. So for the EC to disqualify us and threaten us with the Police, to me is nothing because I have to be on the ballot. And I will definitely be on the ballot because I’m just waiting for the police to give me a report that I have been exonerated and then I will take it to the court for the EC to comply.”

He further threatened place an interlocutory injunction the December 7 elections by Monday if the report delays.

“…That is why we have written to the EC and the CID Director General that they should carry on with the investigation because we don’t accept the decision by the Electoral Commission….and on Monday if we don’t get the report we are going to put injunction on the election. Because if we don’t get the report by Monday morning then it means that they are deliberately keeping us away from the election,” the IPP flagbearer added.

He also rejected claims that he paid people to endorse his candidate.

“Why should I pay GHc50 for what? Who will collect GHc50 before signing for you? IPP is a serious political party, sometimes people think that because we are new we don’t know what we are doing. We know what we are doing.”

PPP, GCPP and NDP sues EC

Some of the parties whose presidential nominees were disqualified – the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), National Democratic Party (NDP) and Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) had sued the EC praying the court to compel the EC to rope them back into the race.

The Electoral Commission on Monday rejected a cash amount presented to it by the Independent People’s Party (IPP) as filing fees for the party’s parliamentary nominees.

Kofi Akpaloo, flagbearer of the party presented his GHc50,000 filing fee in banker’s draft; but gave the EC a cash amount of GHc10,000 each for his parliamentary nominees in a ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag.

Citi News’ Sixtus Dong Ullo reported from the headquarters of the EC that “the Commission turned down the money and instructed that the cash be converted into a banker’s draft and submitted before the midday deadline.”

“The IPP as of the close of nominations was however not able to submit the filing fees for its parliamentary nominees,” he added.

Submit filing fees by midday

All the parties were supposed to submit their filing fees by midday today [Monday], after an Accra High court dismissed an injunction suit filed by the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in protest against the fees.

The PPP had argued that, the GHc50, 000 and GHc10, 000 filing fees for both presidential and parliamentary hopefuls was too high.

CPP filing fee wahala

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) also delayed with the submission of its banker’s draft.

CPP’s Ivor Greenstreet and Nana Gabby Nketia

Sixtus reported that, the CPP led by its National Chairman, Prof. Edumund Delle, told the Commission that they were still processing the banker’s draft to be forwarded to them [EC] before the deadline.

“National Chairman of the CPP, Prof. Delle, showed up at the Commission, two minutes before deadline, to explain that their banker’s drafts for both presidential and parliamentary nominees were still being processed, and asked for more time. The Commission however says it will retire to decide on the request. This could effectively derail the party’s chances to contest the December polls,” Dong Ullo said.

14 parties submit filing fees

A total of 12 political parties and two independent candidates were able to submit filing fees for their presidential and parliamentary nominees to the EC before the 12:00pm deadline today.

Four political parties have so far picked up presidential nomination forms in a bid to unseat incumbent President John Mahama in the December 7 general elections.

Kofi Akpaloo of the Independent People’s party (IPP), Madam Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akwasi Addai Odike of the United Progressive Party (UPP) and Nana Agyenim- Boateng of the United Front Party (UFP) all picked up forms on Tuesday at the Electoral Commission head office in Accra.

The flag bearer of the IPP, Kofi Akpaloo reiterated his commitment to form an all-inclusive government if given the nod in December.

“We want to tell everybody that in everything we will be the first. When it comes to launching manifesto we were the first party to launch our manifesto, we were the first party to pick the nomination forms and we will also be the first party to return it. We want to be the first party on the ballot and we want to win the elections too.”

“We believe that if we come together as a people we should be able to transform our economy so if you an NDC or NPP or whatever party you belong to, so far as you have a good heart, and good spirit and good intention to serve mother Ghana, we are going to invite you into our government to give the people what they need,” added.

All the presidential and parliamentary candidates are expected to submit their completed forms by the end of September 2016.

Parties lament high filing fees

The Electoral Commission had earlier received a wave of bashing from some political parties for pegging presidential and parliamentary filing fees at GHc50, 000 and GHc10, 000 respectively; an amount they complain is too high.

Some of the parties including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have expressed reservations about the amount, saying it would only limit the electioneering process to a privileged few.

EC to consider review of ‘exorbitant’ filing fees

Meanwhile the Electoral Commission (EC) has said it will soon meet to consider whether or not to review the amount.

Speaking to Citi News, the Head of Communications at the EC, Eric Dzakpasu, said the commission will meet to deliberate on the way forward.

“The commission has taken notice of the concerns and that the commission will meet and decide if there is a possibility of a review and that if there is a review it will be communicated to the political parties,” he added.
