Mr David Asante-Apeatu, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has announced that every police officer would soon have GH¢ 50,000 insurance cover.

He said the amount would be used in case of death in the line of duty and three children would be catered for from nursery to tertiary.

He added that even if one should die accidentally or a natural death, the family would be entitled to GH¢ 25,000, and if an officer should suffer permanent disability, he or she would be entitled to GH¢ 25,000.

The IGP disclosed this while addressing the closing ceremony of the training programme for Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) reform in Accra.

Mr Asante-Apeatu said the course was to adequately equip participants with skills and competencies to delight the motoring public firmly and fairly to enforce traffic rules and regulations, demonstrate professionalism and reduce corruption practices on the roads and highways.

He said more attention had been given to the MTTD due to the cumulative negative public perception of the department that had an effect on the whole police organisation.

He reaffirmed that the Ghana Police Service had begun a major transformation programme to lift the organisation to a status in line with its vision “to become a world-class police service capable of delivering planned, democratic, protective, and peaceful services up to international standards.”

“The unacceptable situations where Police Officers on duty, out of sheer arrogance, allow complainants, informants and suspects to parade the corridors of police stations and wait for hours without attention can no longer be tolerated”, he said.

He urged the police officers to do away with all indisciplined and anti-social attitudes which lower the esteem of the service.

Twitter says it plans to raise $1.3 billion by issuing convertible senior notes, its first debt offering since its market debut in November.

Twitter shares fell about 1.5 percent in extended trading on Wednesday.

The company plans two offerings worth 650 million each in convertible senior notes due to mature in 2019 and 2021, the microblogging website said in a filing.

Twitter will also grant initial purchasers an option to buy up to $100 million in each of the offerings.

The San Francisco-based company said it would use part of the net proceeds for general corporate purposes.

The Iraqi government appears to have blocked Facebook, Twitter and other social media, amid escalating combat.

Users in the country attempting to visit these sites are greeted by a message saying the Ministry of Communications has barred access.

The move comes after Islamist insurgents used Twitter to post a graphic image of a beheaded man, and to spread propaganda messages.

A Facebook spokesperson said the block was “a matter of concern”.

One source in Iraq told the BBC that access to the internet was entirely restricted in some provinces.

Commenting on the developments, a YouTube spokesperson said: “We’re seeing reports that some users are not able to access YouTube in Iraq. There is no technical issue on our side and we’re looking into the situation.”

Google’s own analytics show a huge drop in traffic to YouTube since 13 June

On Friday, Twitter’s public policy unit tweeted: “Users in #Iraq are reporting issues accessing our service. We’re investigating their reports and we hope service will be restored quickly.”

A Facebook spokesperson said: “We are disturbed by reports of access issues in Iraq and are investigating. Limiting access to internet services – essential for communication and commerce for millions of people – is a matter of concern for the global community.”

Although internet use was heavily controlled during Saddam Hussein’s presidency, Iraqis have since enjoyed open access to the net.

On Wednesday, something like an Internet worm quickly spread across the Twitter social media network. It came from a tweet of a “♥” symbol that was loaded with a string of code — one that hijacked people’s TweetDeck software.

Like a typical worm, this code told affected TweetDeck accounts to share the message, thus disseminating it everywhere.

An Austrian teenager named Florian (he prefers to go by Firo) says he started it all. Firo, who declined to share his last name, citing privacy concerns, said he figured out Wednesday morning that “&hearts” makes a “♥” symbol in the coding language HTML.

Chatting to CNN on Twitter, he said he was just experimenting when he discovered that using a “♥” created an opening in Tweetdeck’s software, allowing for someone to inject computer program commands via a tweet. Without even meaning to, Firo stumbled on a software bug.

“It wasn’t a hack. It was some sort of accident,” he said.

Firo tried it a few times, adding a heart to every message until he got it to create a pop-up on his own TweetDeck dashboard.

He then announced triumphantly: “Vulnerability discovered in TweetDeck. \ o /”

Firo let Twitter know about the vulnerability as soon as he found it. But it was too late.

Others in the hacker community noticed, and shortly thereafter, a mass TweetDeck hijacking ensued.

The message from Twitter user @derGeruhn was shared more than 37,000 times. Many undid the retweet action trying to peel back the annoyance. People around the world were affected.

But no actual damage was reported. It was a harmless, brief Twitter disruption, little more than an annoyance.

Shortly after the incident, Twitter announced it fixed the problem. The company instructed users to simply log out of TweetDeck, then log back in.

As for Firo, a computer science student at an Austrian technical institute, he said he feels terrible about the whole thing.

“It’s horror that TweetDeck made that mistake,” he said. “It’s horror that [hackers] are using this issue. I don’t know. I’m sad in a way.”
