An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday deferred the sentence of one Seidu Issah, who was arraigned for possessing 58 wrappers and a half compressed parcel of dried leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp.

The court deferred the sentence to October 17 to allow the prosecution to send the exhibit to be tested.

Issah was convicted on his own plea by the court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh.

The court ordered that the exhibit be sent for testing before the next adjourned date.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Patience Mario told the court that the complainant Kwame Antwi is a businessman and lives at Dome Zongo, while Issah is a trader and lives at Achimota Abofu.

She said the complainant’s wife operates a drinking spot at Dome Afghanistan, and the convict has been peddling narcotic drugs in and around the drinking spot.

She said the complainant and his wife had warned him on several occasions to stop his activities around their business but all fell to deaf ears.

DSP Mario said on September 23, at about 0730 hours, the complainant’s wife arrived at her shop and found her younger sister one Latifa deeply asleep, and was informed that the convict cooked jollof rice with Indian hemp and gave some to the victim to eat.

She told the court that, the victim slept till the next day September 24.

The prosecution said the complainant reported the matter to the police and a medical report form was issued to his wife to take her sister to the hospital for medical attention.

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday deferred the sentence of Frutashi Bertrand, a student of Ghana Technology University College, who was arraigned for possessing wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.

Frutashi, who pleaded guilty to the charge, was convicted on his own plea but the court deffered his sentence to allow for the investigator to bring the forensic report of the leaves.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandor remanded the convict and deferred the sentence to Thursday, October 6.

According to prosecutor, Chief Inspector Kwabena Adu, the complainant is a procurement officer at High Gate Hotel located at Asylum Down, while the convict is a student of the Ghana Telecom University, Tesano, and a Cameroonian.

He said on September 18, the convict booked a room at the complainant’s hotel for two days.

On the first night at about 2200 hours a security guard on duty at the Hotel detected smoke coming out of Frutashi’s room.

The prosecution said the window of the room was forced opened by the security guard and saw the convict deeply asleep whilst the room was on fire. The Ghana National Fire Service was contacted and the personnel came to quench the fire.

He told the court that properties worth GH¢11,674.50 were destroyed by the fire. When the fire personnel were checking the damaged items in the room, six wrappers of dried leaves was found in the room, and the convict admitted ownership.

Police Chief Inspector Adu said a complainant was made and the convict was arrested by the Police together with the substance.
