Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) has launched its HUAWEI 5G customer-premises equipment (CPE), the world’s first commercial terminal device supporting the globally recognized 3GPP telecommunication standard for 5G. This device marks a milestone as Huawei sets the stage for the next generation of wireless connectivity.

To ensure peak performance from its 5G CPE, Huawei uses its self-developed Balong 5G01 chipset – the world’s first commercial chipset supporting the 3GPP standard for 5G, with theoretical downlink speeds of up to 2.3Gbps.

It supports 5G across all frequency bands including sub-6GHz and millimeter wave (mmWave) to offer a complete 5G solution suitable for multiple use cases.

The Balong 5G01 makes Huawei the first company offering an end-to-end 5G solution through its network, devices and chipset-level capabilities.

“5G technology will underpin the next leap forward for our intelligent world, where people, vehicles, homes and devices are fully connected, delivering new experiences, insights and capabilities,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group.

“Since 2009, Huawei has invested US$600 million in research and development into 5G technologies, where we have led the way with innovations around network architecture, spectrum usage, field verification and more. From connected vehicles and smart homes to AR/VR and hologram videos, we are committed to developing a mature 5G ecosystem so that consumers can benefit from a truly connected world that transforms the way we communicate and share.”

The HUAWEI 5G CPE has two models, low frequency (sub6GHz) 5G CPE and high frequency (mmWave) 5G CPE respectively.

The HUAWEI low frequency 5G CPE is small and lightweight, compatible with 4G and 5G networks, and has proven measured download speeds of up to 2Gbps – 20 times that of 100Mbps fiber.

This provides an ultra-fast experience, allowing users to enjoy VR video and gaming experiences, or download a TV show within a second. The HUAWEI high frequency 5G CPE is available in indoor and outdoor units.

5G networks set new standards for high speed, wide bandwidth, low latency wireless connections, with a peak downlink rate of 20Gbps, support for one million devices per square kilometer and latency as low as 0.5ms.

5G promises an enhanced connection between people and the Internet of Things, raising the potential for the number of devices that can be connected and the amount and type of data that can be shared between them.

Huawei CBG has developed a 5G device strategy which utilizes the high-speed, low-latency, big-connectivity qualities of 5G to create richer, more varied connected experiences for users. This strategy includes smartphones, mobile Wi-Fi, industrial modules and other devices to connect people and objects in their homes, vehicles and beyond.

Huawei has partnered with over 30 global telecommunication carriers, including Vodafone, Softbank, T-Mobile, BT, Telefonica, China Mobile and China Telecom.

In 2017, Huawei began testing 5G commercial networks with partners. Huawei completed interoperability testing and started offering the first round of 5G commercial networks in 2018.

Things are still looking pretty bleak for Huawei’s plans to conquer the U.S. market.

Earlier this week, top members of intelligence agencies, which includes the FBI, CIA and NSA reaffirmed surveillance concerns about the company and fellow Chinese smartphone maker ZTE.

All of this is nothing new, of course. The companies’ troubles date back at least as far back as 2012 when a House Intelligence Committee cited both as potential security risks over close ties to the Chinese government.

The following year, they were both barred from selling the product to the U.S. government.

FBI director Chris Wray echoed those concerns during a hearing Tuesday, stating, “We’re deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don’t share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks.”

Huawei has since issued a response, accusing the government of “inhibiting [its] business in the U.S. market” and adding, “Huawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170 countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT vendor, sharing as we do common global supply chains and production capabilities.”

The letter closely echoed the statements of an angry Richard Yu on stage last month at CES. “We’ve won the trust of the Chinese carriers,” Yu fumed at the company’s keynote. “We’ve also won spots on all of the European carriers.”

That off-the-cuff speech came after an AT&T deal fell through last second, seemingly at the behest of the same lawmakers warning against purchasing the company’s hardware.

It was a big blow for the company, given that a majority of U.S. phone purchases still go through carriers.

Meantime, Huawei has attempted to double down on non-carrier retailers in the States.

That aggressive push, however, has put the company in even more hot water, as fake reviews for its flagship the Mate 10 Pro have reportedly surfaced on Best Buy’s website, apparently linked to a Facebook contest spurred on by Huawei.

The ICT sphere has undergone distinct stages of evolution and has lately been focussing on going digital, which means shifting the paradigm from traditional business to an intelligent society.

Based on recent studies, Africa is the smallest market but also the fastest growing worldwide.

However, based on statistics from Hootsuite, Africa is a relatively distinctive continent with only 29 % of Internet penetration and 14 % active on social media.  Nonetheless, Africa is known to be the technological renaissance.

According to Weare social, 7 out of 10 of the world’s fastest growing companies are in Africa – the beginning of a trend that will give rise to new digital economies.

In 2016, GSMA has shown that 300+ hubs have emerged in the African Tech Start-up ecosystem. Investors are recognising the potential as well, and so, going digital is a strategic decision for any African enterprise.

The facets of a Digital Strategy

Digital strategy is generally best seen as a tripartite engagement between the Government as enablers, Carriers as promoters and Technology partners as solution providers in a win-win context.

It does not only boost macro-economic growth but also solves legacy enterprise or carrier issues in terms of time to market, shrinking traditional revenue streams, controlling costs, driving new revenues, monetizing investments, and achieving convergence.

These give birth to an ecosystem facilitating the lives of smart citizens.

Digital strategy has 2 facets:

  • Providing digital services which focusses on future of connectivity based products & services.
  • A bigger change within the organization which emphasizes on transforming existing paradigm to enhance customer experience via new digital services, focusing on business, process, and people.

Cloudification is a salient stepping stone towards the digital world, and the question for making the move is more a concern of when then why.

The benefits of digital

There are substantial benefits of digital versus the traditional way of conducting business, in the likes of improved efficiency, slimmer cost structure, faster time to market with focus on the customer, new services and openness.

Hence, cloud can be depicted as the stairway of digital strategy. The most optimal way to go about this change from legacy IT mode of operations to the digital world is by adopting a modular & converged cloud architecture.

That being said, choice of infrastructure is paramount to allow for future flexibility, scalability and evolution supporting all flavours of cloud, whether public, private, or hybrid.

Many enterprises including banks have adopted cloud by initially moving internal & non-business critical applications before shifting the critical applications.

Once gone through this initial phase, it’s the turn for the telecom network to be virtualized via NFV.

This phased approach is convenient to carriers and is also supported by vendors, but partnership options vary from case to case.

The most adopted option is to partner with a vendor of choice resulting in lower risks and costs in a revenue share model.

This represents an opportunity for carriers to transform their business model from being a traditional voice, data and VAS operator to a Cloud Service Provider while addressing data sovereignty and security concerns.

Forbes highlights that this is the moment to go digital and that digital business is everyone’s business, hence, it is also the right moment for Africa.

Clear paybacks are present in embracing the paradigm shift and given the intense competition in the telecom arena, first movers have definite advantages.

Missing the train has drastic consequences in a competitive and fast-moving environment like Africa.

How Huawei is paving the way

Among many initiatives from HUAWEI, the main one revolves in establishing industry alliances.

In view of creating the right ecosystem in Africa, HUAWEI has joined hands with strategic partners to implement an OpenLab, in Johannesburg, which aims at promoting openness, collaboration, and shared success, which facilitates the development of digital and cloud, in the region and beyond.

Huawei is also making significant investments to accommodate this wave of change.

Specific compliance certifications to eliminate barriers for cloud adoption, in various verticals, are continuously being implemented.

Huawei has partnered with strategic carriers and Government in various African countries to build ‘National Data Centers’ allowing customer data to be kept within a geography and enabling customers to meet local data residency requirements.

Carriers represent a key link in the chain transformation and Huawei stands out as a strategic stakeholder to pave the way for an intelligent Africa, in adoption of cloud and Digital services.

Despite the rapid advancement in information communication technologies (ICT) globally, the vast majority of people across Africa remain either unconnected, or only have access to slow internet connections.

On the continent, the average broadband penetration rate sits at less than 1%, while 80% of connected households have to make do with bandwidth of less than 2Mbp/s. While approximately 20-million households in the region are in dire need of access to broadband.

While copper cables and/or optical fibre is often used to deliver stable and fast home broadband (HBB) services in cities with favourable economic conditions, providing similar infrastructure beyond urban areas is more challenging.

Wired access deployment is costly, time-consuming and expensive to maintain, while sparser populations and lower disposable income levels in rural areas results in a poor return on investment (ROI), and it becomes clear that an alternative is needed.

Fibre-like experience

Huawei’s Wireless to the X (WTTx) broadband is the ideal solution for operators looking to expand coverage beyond urban centres.

Based on 4.5G wireless broadband technologies, including massive MIMO and carrier aggregation, WTTx significantly improves spectral efficiency and provides bandwidth of over 1 Gbp/s, giving home users a fibre-like experience.

High-gain plug and play customer premise equipment (CPE) – a wireless household gateway – is used to provide the entire range of mobile broadband (MBB) services for end users, including video broadcasts, VoIP, enterprise networks, and even VR movies, and gaming.

Unlike copper or fibre, which requires trenching and/or pole installations, operators can leverage existing 4G base stations for WTTx, significantly reducing network deployment time and costs, while also helping operators to increase their monthly average revenue per user (ARPU).

ITU statistics show that 148 countries around the globe have proposed national broadband strategies to enhance the broadband penetration rate and internet experience. Many operators in sub-Saharan Africa consider WTTx as a top priority, and have provided WTTx broadband access to over 1 million households by 2017.

Complementary technologies

WTTx can be deployed during initial stages of broadband service development to understand local broadband requirements; if user has higher experience requirement, operators are advised to focus on FTTx to improve user experience and increase revenue.

In villages and towns with FTTx networks and close to large cities, operators can provide WTTx-based differentiated products to develop a competitive edge, boasting both complementary fixed and mobile networks. WTTx+FTTx hybrid networking mode allows operators to quickly gain broadband users, shorten ROI periods, and improve ROI.

International successes of the innovative WTTx solution has help operators to develop and gain revenue in a blue ocean market, and the technology is expected to be a key contributor to increasing broadband penetration and connecting ‘the next billion’.

Despite the high levels of mobile penetration in Kenya, fixed broadband penetration rate sits at less than two percent, which fails to meet the network requirements for the next generation of home and business users, and potentially offers new market opportunities for carriers.

According to the ITU’s “Impact of broadband on the economy” report, broadband networks create jobs directly and indirectly, with positive spillover effects for businesses and consumers. Broadband adoption within organizations is shown to lead to gains in productivity, while residential adoption is shown to lead to growth in household expendable income.

Through broadband, businesses can use a variety of cloud-based services to accelerate digital transformation, while individuals stand to benefit from improved access to education, healthcare, mobility, government services, and more.

Moving a step further, the Broadband Commission’s State of Broadband Report has identified the creation of “Knowledge Cities”, which builds on the Smart City concept by putting human beings explicitly at their center, and focuses on greater inclusion, pluralism, participation, education, diversity, creativity and human well-being.

Safaricom is expanding in the Kenyan Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) market by innovatively tackling current challenges as scattered user distribution, high network construction costs and low early phase service provisioning rates and revenues.

Cost-effective end-to-end solution

To determine precise investments, based on the idea of value-oriented network construction, Safaricom uses analytics to determine network rollout in line with customer demand as its first step. Thereafter, the company deployed Huawei’s end-to-end FTTH solution, utilizing the existing metropolitan area network’s optical aerial cables where possible to cut down on construction time.

With Huawei’s lightweight mini operations support system (OSS), Safaricom was further able to reduce the system integration period and complete deployment within three months instead of eighteen months.

Huawei also provided a smartphone app that integrates installation, maintenance and operations, supports on-site service provisioning and acceptance, and shortens the service provisioning period from two weeks to less than 48 hours – doubling the installation rate.

Jeff Wang, President of Huawei’s Access Network Product Line, says, “Emerging markets place strong demands on FTTH network services. The top challenge that operators face is shortening the ROI period and the Huawei E2E FTTH solution, solves this. It features precise investment, fast network construction, quick service provisioning, and efficient operations and maintenance, enabling operators to greatly shorten the return on investment period and achieve business success.”

To date, Huawei has provided ultra-broadband (UBB) access services to 500 million home users globally.

Apple has filed a complaint against Swatch in a Swiss court over the use of the phrase Tick Different in a marketing campaign.

Swatch is using the slogan to market a wristwatch containing a contactless payment chip.

Apple says the phrase unfairly references its Think Different campaign, which ran in the 1990s.

According to Swiss news site Watson, Swatch chief executive Nick Hayek said the similarity was purely coincidental.

He said the slogan was a nod to one of its own campaigns from the 1980s: “Always different, always new.”

Apple used Think Different in its adverts from 1997 to 2002, in what was thought to be a response to IBM’s Think ad campaign.

A 1998 television advert, featuring black-and-white images of historical figures such as Einstein and Gandhi, won an Emmy.

Previous clash

In the complaint to the Swiss Federal Administrative Court, Apple’s lawyers Lenz & Staehelin said the tagline was long considered “the core of the Apple brand”.

Legal experts say that, to win the case, Apple must show that Swatch’s use of the phrase Tick Different provokes an association with Apple products in the minds of at least 50% of consumers.

A similar complaint lodged at the same time with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property was rejected.

Swatch was granted trademark status for the phrase Tick Different in the US in 2015. It also has the trademark for the slogan in Switzerland.

This is not the first time the two companies have clashed.

In September last year, the UK Intellectual Property Office upheld Swatch’s opposition to Apple’s efforts to trademark “iWatch” in the UK.

It ruled that the term was too close to “iSwatch” and “Swatch”.
