An off-duty doctor sprung into action on a long-haul flight when a woman sitting next to him suddenly went into labour on the plane.

27-year-old second-year urology resident Dr Sij Hemal successfully delivered baby Jake after his mother’s contractions started a week early on December 17.

For Dr Hemal, who works at Cleveland Clinic’s Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, the eight hour Air France flight from Paris to New York was the second leg of his journey back to the States from India.

He just so happened to be sitting next to a French paediatrician, Dr Susan Shepherd, on the flight.

Dr Hemal was watching a film and waiting for a glass of champagne when a fellow passenger, Toyin Ogundipe, went into labour.

“I was pretty tired from jet lag,” said Dr Hemal, who’d celebrated his best friend’s wedding the day before. “I thought I’d just have a drink and fall asleep. As it turned out, I’m glad I didn’t drink anything.”

Jake was born on December 17 while aboard an international flight.

41-year-old Ogundipe is a banker who lives between the US and Nigeria – she went into labour early while travelling with her four-year-old daughter, Amy.

Unfortunately, the cabin crew couldn’t perform an emergency landing because the plane was flying over the southern coast of Greenland and a diversion would’ve taken two hours.

But luckily both Dr Hemal and Dr Shepherd were on hand.

Ogundipe was moved up to first class (which was thankfully largely empty), and both doctors went with her.

“Her contractions were about 10 minutes apart, so the paediatrician and I began to monitor her vital signs and keep her comfortable,” explains Dr. Hemal.

But all they had by way of tools was the plane’s scarce medical kit.

As Ogundipe’s contractions increased to just two minutes apart, it quickly became clear she would have to have the baby on board.

Fortunately, although Dr Hemal’s area of expertise is urology, he’d delivered seven babies as part of his medical training.

“We’re trained to stay calm and think clearly in emergency situations,” he said. “I just tried to think ahead to what might go wrong, and come up with a creative solution.”

And the calm manner of the doctors ensured Ogundipe stayed relaxed too: “I was relaxed because I knew I was in safe hands,” she said. “They did everything a doctor or midwife would have done if I was in the labour room in the hospital. Even better, if you ask me.”

30 minutes of pushing later, Ogundipe’s baby boy Jake was born. Dr Hemal removed the placenta and tied off the umbilical cord with a surgical clamp and a shoestring before cutting it off with scissors.

After Jake’s health was assessed by Dr Shepherd, he soon began nursing on his mother.

As soon as the plane touched down in New York, Ogundipe, Amy and Jake headed straight to hospital but were released later that day. She’s now recovering with family in New Jersey.

But Dr Hemal’s journey still wasn’t over – he had another flight to Cleveland to catch, which, luckily, was less eventful.

mom-baby-plane-01152018-1024x1021.jpg

Since the unusual labour, Dr Hemal says Air France has sent him a travel voucher as well as a bottle of champagne to make up for the glass he never received on board.

He, Dr Shepherd and Ogundipe have stayed in touch too.

“So much could have gone wrong, but it didn’t. Being on that particular flight, sitting next to a paediatrician… it’s like it was destiny,” says Dr. Hemal. “Thanks to God, everything worked out.”

A 25-year old unemployed lady who threw a broken wine glass at her boyfriend’s left rib during a misunderstanding over another woman, has been ordered to stay 100 meters away from him.

She will in default of the order go to jail for 12 months.

Bilasssa Mansah is also said to have pulled a cutlass on the complainant, destroyed his door and centre table, and poured water into rice and stew prepared by the complainant.

Passing the sentence, an Accra Circuit Court further ordered her to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for 24 months or in default serve six months imprisonment.

Mansah charged with causing harm pleaded guilty, saying that she did not know what came over her.

According to her, their relationship was not over.

The trial judge, Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku on December 29, convicted her but deferred Mansah’s sentence to Monday, January 1, 2018.

On her return from Police cells, Mansah who was unwell told the court that she felt uncomfortable in cells adding that she collapsed whiles in lawful custody.

The trial judge then told her that next time if she repeats her bad conduct, she (Mansah) would go to jail for a long time.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Agnes Boafo said the complainant Stephen Nsoh is self-employed residing at Adenta- Frafraha, Accra, whilst Mansah also resides in the same vicinity.

ASP Boafo said during early part of December, this year, the complainant and Mansah entered into a relationship.

However, during the course of the relationship, a misunderstanding ensued between them and they separated for a while.

ASP Boafo said on December 20, this year, at about 0800 hours, Mansah went to the complainant‘s house to demand her wine glass and met another lady with him.

The prosecution said Mansah got angry and when the complainant presented the wine glass to her she refused to leave.

Mansah then informed the complainant that she was pregnant and he should give her some money to seek medical care, but the complainant who knew that she (accused) was undergoing a family planning regime neglected the comments about pregnancy

The prosecution said the complainant’s behaviour infuriated the accused who caused damage to the complainant’s centre table and poured water into his rice and stew which was on fire.

According to the prosecution, a co-tenant in the case separated the accused and the complainant.

The co-tenant advised Mansah to leave but she pulled out a cutlass and dared the complainant to come out.

Mansah further destroyed the complainant’s trap door with the cutlass.

When the co-tenant succeeded in collecting the cutlass from Mansah, the complainant came out of the room to pick up a metal bucket.

The prosecution said Mansah collected the bucket and attempted to hit the complainant’s head with the bucket. The complainant, however held the bucket and the edge of the bucket cut the complainant’s left thumb.

Whiles the complainant was bleeding, Mansah picked up the broken wine glass and threw it at the complainant’s left rib.

The incident was reported to the Police and complainant was given a medical report form to seek medical attention.

The prosecution said the complainant was rushed to the Pantang Hospital but due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to the Legon Government Hospital where he was operated upon and discharged on December 26, this year.

Management of the Battor Catholic Hospital in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region took delivery of some vital medical equipment following a response to their appeal to the Member of Parliament for the area, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

It was all joy and relief for staff and patients of the hospital upon receipt of medical equipment; ranging from two sets of baby incubators, a suction machine, a phototherapy machine, an operating theatre bed, five sets of oxygen flow meters, an autoclave machine, baby cots and sets of bedsheets.

The intervention, the hospital administration said would go a long way to improve quality of health delivery in the district and other adjoining districts that benefits from the facility.

In an interview with the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, he said his pledge to bring some relief to the hospital is crucial to the well-being of his constituents especially expectant and nursing mothers, and their children.

He said the equipment procured so far is worth over one hundred thousand Ghana cedis(GHC 100,000) with an ambulance yet to be delivered.

Donating the equipment to the beneficiaries, the MP asked that they maintain them properly to serve the hospital for a long time.

Some patients at the Hospital thanked the Member of Parliament for the gesture.

North Tongu: Ablakwa supports Free SHS with donation to schools

Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa early on presented some items in support of the implementation of the government’s free Senior High School education policy.

Two secondary schools in the North Tongu district; Mepe St Kizito and Battor Senior High Schools, on Wednesday took delivery of a total of 200 set of mono desks, seven white marker boards, 10 boxes of markers and 10 teacher desks with their accompanying chairs.

At least 64 children have died over six days at a government hospital in northern India that suffered oxygen shortages, officials said Saturday.

Authorities have launched an inquiry into the causes of the oxygen disruption but denied reports that it had caused the deaths at the Baba Raghav Das Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh state.

Indian media said 30 children died on Thursday and Friday because of the lack of oxygen on wards. Suppliers’ bills had allegedly not been paid.

“Sixty patients have died at the hospital in the last five days but we don’t think it’s linked to reports of oxygen shortage,” Anil Kumar, Gorakhpur’s divisional commissioner told AFP.

State health minister Sidharth Nath Singh announced later that four more deaths had been reported Saturday, taking the toll to 64 over the six days starting Monday.

Singh denied that any of the deaths were linked to the oxygen shortage.

Twenty-three children died on Thursday, when, according to a statement shared by the office of state chief minister, “the pressure of the liquid oxygen supply became low and 52 reserve oxygen cylinders were pressed into service”.

The office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that Modi was “monitoring the situation in Gorakhpur” and was in touch with state authorities. Modi’s conservative nationalist party controls the state.

‘All hell broke loose’

The Hindustan Times newspaper on Saturday described chaotic scenes at the hospital as oxygen supply was disrupted.

“Even as 90 jumbo oxygen cylinders were pressed into service to maintain the supply on Friday, the hospital ran out of oxygen around 1.00am,” it said.

“All hell broke loose,” the report added.

“What followed was complete chaos as panic-stricken relatives of patients ran for help, and with the support of hospital staff tried to maintain supply of oxygen… using artificial manual breathing bags (AMBB).

“However several patients started collapsing due to inadequate supply,” it added.

One uncle of an 11-year-old girl, Vandana, who died at the hospital, echoed local media reports about the chaos.

“We didn’t know what was happening at the time. The staff just told us to keep pressing AMBB after every count till three. We kept doing that for some time,” he told ABP news channel.

The region is one of India’s poorest and registers hundreds of child deaths each year from Japanese Encephalitis and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, which is rife in parts of eastern and northern India.

“We will be getting more liquid oxygen cylinders tonight or tomorrow, and have also cleared the dues of the supplier,” district official Kumar told AFP.

He added that the deaths could be due to “natural” causes, as many patients admitted are in “serious” condition.

India’s Nobel Peace laureate Kailash Satyarthi, a campaigner for children’s rights, described the deaths as “a massacre” on Twitter.

“Thirty kids died in hospital without oxygen. This is not a tragedy. It’s a massacre. Is this what 70 years of freedom means for our children?” he said.

The state’s health minister suspended the hospital’s top official, holding him accountable for the oxygen supply until the completion of a formal investigation.

“The reasons for the disruption of oxygen supply are being investigated but our probe has revealed that no deaths happened because of it,” Singh told reporters after a visit to the hospital.

“When you hear about around 23 deaths in a day, it shocks you, and it should,” he said.

“But the average daily death toll for the month of August (at the hospital) has been 19 to 22 for the last three years,” the minister added.

Patients at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, can now heave a sigh of a relief after a few days of water shortage at the hospital.

The hospital experienced a 4-day water shortage from 13th January to 16th of January 2017, leaving patients to their fate in search for water for health care delivery.

Speaking to Citi News, the Head of Administration of the hospital, Mr. Zakariah Yakubu, said the Hospital has taken measures to fix the problem.

“The water shortage situation was serious from last week Friday to Monday, when we had a challenge with the Ghana Water Company supplying the hospital with water due to a technical problem; but the main cause of the water shortage in the hospital emanates from community members trooping into the hospital’s water tanks especially in the night, to empty them hence causing the shortage. This is so because there are several unapproved routes into the hospital.”

Upper East Regional Hospital

Mr. Yakubu however stated that, even though Ghana Water Company Limited has restored water supply to the hospital, the facility has to also procure additional water from water suppliers to augment the situation.”

“The hospital buys about five trips of water every week for close to GHc 1,000.00. We have also dug a mechanized borehole to beef up water supply in the hospital, but the Ghana Water Company took a sample of the water for testing in November 2016, and is yet to furnish us with the results so that we can start using the borehole.”

Mr.Yakubu added that, the hospital has started erecting water tanks up to prevent community members from accessing the water for other purposes.

“As a temporary measure, we are locking up six pipes and leaving two of them for prudent water management in the hospital”

Mr. Yakubu admonished community members to refrain from abusing water meant for treatment of patients in the hospital, adding that, any community member caught abusing water from the hospital will face the full rigors of the law.

Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have called off their strike following series of negotiations with the Health Ministry, the Mental Health Authority and the Ghana Registered Nurses Association (GRNA).

The nurses withdrew their services last week over government’s failure to provide them with basic logistics and essential medicines which they said worsened the conditions of some of the mental patients.

They were also making a demand for better conditions of service.

[contextly_sidebar id=”iwl4MP8Nh0AjroYupfPi1XTC7uF3zjYa”]Government has also released some funds for the facility to offset some of its debt and to also run the place. Government is expected to release more funds for the facility in the coming weeks.

According to the Chairperson of the nurses, Jemila Hussein, the decision to call off the strike was taken due to the partial provision of some logistics they requested for.

She however noted that, they will not hesitate to lay down their tolls again if their conditions get worse.

Meanwhile, the Hospital on Sunday released some nineteen patients due to its financial challenges, and management plans to release a total of about two hundred and fifty by the end of this week if their situation doesn’t improve.

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has ordered Nurses at the Accra Psychiatric hospital to call off their strike and resume work with immediate effect.

The direction follows a meeting the Commission had on Wednesday with the Minister of Health, representatives of the nurses and authorities of the hospital.

[contextly_sidebar id=”1bamT6kR6cmK3WpgFXIFo1Whrv1neuEs”]The psychiatric nurses on Monday embarked on an indefinite strike, claiming that work at the facility posed serious risk to them.

They lamented that, the lack of some logistics and materials at the hospital  is making it difficult for them to discharge their duties effectively, hence their decision to lay down their tools.

But the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Charles Adongo Bawaduah, said the nurses breached the labour laws by failing to notify the NLC before embarking on the strike.

The Commission has therefore directed the Ministry of Health to devise immediate solutions by providing the nurses with logistics, drugs and  other relevant tools.

It further added that the Accra Psychiatric Hospital will settle all medical bills of members of the psychiatric nurses who in the course of duties have suffered attacks from patients.

Health Ministry begs Nurses to return to work

The Ministry of Health earlier urged striking nurses of the psychiatric hospital to call off their strike as it works to address their concerns.

According to the Ministry, some GH¢1 billion will soon be disbursed by the Ministry of Finance for the procurement of some needed logistics for the facility.

“The finance ministry is releasing some money to us. They’ve dealt with the human right aspect of it. So moving forward, we are asking them to go back to work while we deal with the issue,”Tony Goodman, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health told Citi News.

A doctor and a hospital attendant have been arrested for the alleged rape of a woman who was being treated at a top hospital in western India, a police officer said Friday.

The two hospital employees were arrested on Thursday after the alleged victim, who was being treated for dengue, said they drugged and raped her twice over the weekend.

The 19-year-old woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, had been moved to the intensive care unit of the Apollo hospital in Gujarat state.

“The primary medical report has confirmed rape and the victim has identified both the accused. They are on police remand,” Virendra Yadav, police chief of Gandhinagar city, told AFP.

Yadav said police have sent blood samples from the accused for forensic tests and are examining CCTV footage.

The Apollo hospital group said it was cooperating with police. “The ward where the incident took place has 14 staff members working round the clock, and is equipped with CCTV cameras,” Apollo said in a statement.

It is not the first time patients in Indian hospitals have alleged rape. In February a teenager who was being treated in hospital after a sexual assault in eastern Jharkhand state accused a hospital security guard of raping her.

More than 34,000 rapes were reported in 2015, according to the latest figures from the national crimes records bureau, but many go unreported and the true figure is believed to be much higher.
