The aim was to bring smiles to the faces of children in the community who had also been displaced due to the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The “Help A Christmas Child” initiative is an annual event organized on Boxing Day through the Citi Foundation, during which the staff and management of Citi FM/Citi TV spend the day with the less privileged in society, showering them with goodies and sumptuous meals.

Over 30,000 residents along the Volta Lake and its estuaries were displaced following the spillage of the Akosombo Dam in September 2023.

Citi FM/Citi TV, with the support of the media house’s cherished audience and corporate Ghana, provided relief items to the affected residents.

Currently, a number of resettlement centers are at various stages of completion in some of the severely impacted communities.

Tokpo is one of the communities benefiting from these projects.

This year, the team will be visiting Adamrobe, a village in the Eastern Region.

The project, which seeks to fete and entertain children within the deprived community, has enjoyed support from many companies including Twellium Ghana and Kasapreko Company Limited, who have donated beverages to help refresh the children in that community.

SPL Estates, a real estate company based at Darkuman in Accra, but with properties at Adamrobe, also donated packs of drinks, biscuits, candies, boxes of water and cheese balls as part of their contribution to the project.

The annual event comes under the Citi Foundation, which is the corporate social responsibility arm of the station that seeks to support deprived communities every Boxing Day.

Citi FM undertakes this project by soliciting for food items and funds from its listeners to make it successful.

For several years, the station has put smiles on the faces of residents of deprived communities in the country with particular focus on children.

Donations of rice, sugar, oil, canned food, milk, biscuits, toys and confectionery, can be made at the front desk of the station, which is located at Number 11 Dr Morton Street, behind the Adabraka Police Station.

For several years, the station has visited deprived areas in the country to bring some Christmas cheer to the people living there, with particular focus on children.

In 2015, the staff of the station spent Boxing Day at Sota and Abonya, whilst the people of Manchie and Korleman were the beneficiaries of the project in 2016.

On both occasions, the children were given a real treat, as there was a lot to eat and drink, as well as music for those who wanted to shuffle their feet.

This year, Citi FM heads to Adamrobe, an underprivileged village in the Eastern Region.

Listeners and staff of Citi FM will be joined by volunteers looking to do some good in the society on December 26, as the children of Adamrobe are treated to the best Yuletide celebrations they have ever had.

A recent visit to area by some members of the Citi team in preparation for the event showed how excited the children are.

Unable to contain their joy, the children posed for the cameras and danced, beaming with smiles the whole time.

Citi FM as part of its annual Help a Christmas Child project, put smiles on the faces of children of the two deprived towns in the Ga West Municipality with support from its listeners.

The kids were served sumptuous meals, drinks and also given teddy bears, learning materials, clothes, biscuits, toffees among others, and were also treated to good music.

The elated children, who were grateful to Citi FM for the intervention, could not hide their joy.

“I am very happy to see these things. I have not celebrated Christmas like this before. I thank Citi FM for what they have done for me. God bless Citi FM,” one of the children, Ethel, said.

Another child, Joycelyn, said “I am very happy with Citi FM. God bless Citi FM for giving me these items.”

Every Boxing Day, the station with the support of its listeners, holds a party for underprivileged children in selected communities.

Mr. Saddique donated an amount of money to Citi FM’s cause in addition to some cartons of bottled water.

iflix donated cartons of soft drinks and some books for the kids.

A spokesperson for the iflix party, Michael Gyang, said partaking in the Help a Christmas Child project was a worthy medium of for the company to fulfill its corporate social responsibility.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we looked around and found Citi FM’s project and decided to be part of it so in supporting the kid, we brought some few items and some cash.”

“Instead of ending the year with parties and fun, it is better we put a smile on these kids’ faces who are less privileged,” Michael Gyang said.

On Boxing Day, the station with help from its listeners, will organise an outreach and party for underprivileged children at Manchie and Korleman, two adjoining communities located in the Ga West Municipality, off the Accra-Nsawam road.

This follows Citi FM’s trip to Sota and Abonya, where residents benefited from this gesture in 2015.

Brief about Maanchie and Korleman

Manchie and Korleman are two adjoining communities located in the Ga West Municipality, off the Accra-Nsawam road.

Without the traffic, it should take you roughly an hour to arrive in these two communities by road. Manchie is bordered on the East by Samsam Odumase; to the West is  Kuntunse; to the South and North,  it is bordered by Mayira and Korleman respectively.

Crops like plantain and oil palm trees are seen dotted along the dirt road as one enters the town. Majority of the residents live in mud houses. Like every other community, Manchie and Korleman have their own unique challenges. There are no public toilets or taps. Inhabitants rely on just a few boreholes and hand dug wells.

Despite the challenges confronting them, they are looking forward to celebrating this  Christmas with Staff of Citi FM.

CHILDREN MAKE DEMANDS

Even before Citi FM and its listeners fete children at Manchie and Korleman, the kids already have their wish list.

Thirteen-year-old Baniku Bernard said “I want a whole bag of rice for my family, drinks, a pair of shoes for school and church and a bottle of non-alcoholic champagne.

Phanuel Dotse, a class four pupil, who has dreams of becoming a commercial driver requested for Fried Rice and Soft  drinks.

Fourteen-year-old Jemima Dogbe, a student of Manchie MA Basic School is aspiring to be an exceptional teacher in the near future. She told CitiFM she wanted exercise books, pen and pencils and chalks for her school.

Another student, Eunice Dzissah, asked for a laptop, bicycle, school uniforms and shoes as gifts for the Christmas.

WHY MANCHIE AND KORLEMAN  WERE  SELECTED.

The Human Resource Manager and the Head of Citi FM’s Corporate Social Responsibility Mrs Jenifer Anane Nsiah said the two towns were selected because they fit the criteria of what the station wanted.

Mrs Nsiah said, ‘’ you know, last year, we extended this gesture to children in Sota and Abonya which are located in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region.

But this year, we decided that these towns should be selected because of their peculiar challenges. Even though they are located within the City, they are very disadvantaged in many ways.

And what better time, to fete them than on Boxing day, December 26”, she stated.
