Half of British women and a fifth of men have been sexually harassed at work or a place of study, a BBC survey says.

Of the women who said they had been harassed, 63% said they didn’t report it to anyone, and 79% of the male victims kept it to themselves.

The ComRes poll for BBC Radio 5 live spoke to more than 2,000 people.

The survey was commissioned after sexual assault claims against Harvey Weinstein resulted in widespread sharing of sexual harassment stories.

Women and men who have been sexually harassed have been revealing their experiences on social media using the hashtag “me too” to show the magnitude of the problem worldwide.

That followed allegations, including rape and sexual assault, against Mr Weinstein from more than two dozen women – among them actresses Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rose McGowan.

The Hollywood producer insists sexual relations he had were consensual.

The Radio 5 live survey, of 2,031 British adults, found that 37% of all those asked – 53% of women and 20% of men – said they had experienced sexual harassment, ranging from inappropriate comments to actual sexual assaults, at work or a place of study.

More than a quarter of people surveyed had suffered harassment in the form of inappropriate jokes or “banter” and nearly one in seven had suffered inappropriate touching.

Of those who had been harassed, 5 live’s survey suggests one in 10 women had been sexually assaulted.

More women than men were targeted by a boss or senior manager – 30% compared with 12% – and one in 10 women who had experienced harassment said it led to them leaving their job or place of study.

‘Dirty and uncomfortable’

One man, who did not want to be identified, said he had been harassed by his female boss.

He said: “She made constant comments about my appearance and how I dressed – comments asking about my hairy chest and what I liked in a woman.

“[It was] all laughed off by other mainly female office staff, but it left me feeling dirty and uncomfortable.

“I ended up with depression and confidence issues and had time off with anxiety as a result.”

Sarah Killcoyne, from Cambridge, told BBC News she was sexually assaulted when she was still in education by two different men – a school teacher when she was a teenager and later by a college professor.

She said: “I would very much like to see the people around the predators – we know there’s only a few of them – to stop enabling them.”

Since the allegations about Mr Weinstein surfaced, many high profile names have used social media to highlight the problem of sexual assault, some also detailing the harassment they have endured.

‘Paralysed by fear’

Jess Phillips and Mary Creagh were among the MPs to reveal their accounts as they wanted to encourage victims of abuse to speak out.

Labour’s Ms Phillips told the London Evening Standard how she had been left “paralysed by fear” when she woke up at a party to find her boss undoing her belt and trying to get into her trousers.

Fellow Labour MP Ms Creagh said she was just seven when she was sexually assaulted by about 12 boys during a school playground game of kiss-chase.

The results of the BBC survey follow research published last year by the TUCwhich also suggested more than half of women say they have been sexually harassed at work – and most had not reported it.

Activist Tarana Burke is the founder of the original Me Too campaign – launched 10 years ago in the United States to provide “empowerment through empathy” to survivors of sexual abuse, assault, exploitation, and harassment in underprivileged communities.

She told 5 Live she feels there is now momentum behind a genuine change in the way sexual harassment is handled.

“From what I’m seeing and hearing, and from the groundswell of support for this, it doesn’t feel like it’s stopping,” she said.

“My ultimate goal is to make sure this is not just a moment, that this is a movement, and we will continue to raise our voices, we will continue to disrupt, we will continue to tell our stories until we are heard and until we move the needle.”

Novak Djokovic ended his Grand Slam drought and Roger Federer’s hopes of a record eighth Wimbledon title with a thrilling five-set victory.

The Serb, 27, came through 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 to win his second Wimbledon and seventh Grand Slam title.

After letting a championship point slip in the fourth set, he won Wimbledon’s first five-set final since 2009.

Djokovic had lost his previous three major finals, and will now reclaim the number one ranking from Rafael Nadal.

“After losing the fourth set it wasn’t easy to go on and win the fifth set, I don’t know how I did it,” Djokovic told BBC Sport.

“This is the best tournament in the world and the one I always wanted to win so to be able to compete at such a high level I am so grateful.”

Federer, 32, had hoped to surpass Pete Sampras with an eighth title and become the oldest winner in modern times.

The Swiss was willed on by much of the 15,000-strong crowd throughout the final, with chants of “Roger! Roger!” ringing around Centre Court when he reeled off five successive games from 5-2 down in the fourth set.

But Djokovic recovered his nerve to fend off break points in the decider and clinch a dramatic win after three hours and 56 minutes, before kneeling on the turf and eating some grass – just as he had done after winning in 2011.

He then headed into the stands to celebrate with his team, including three-time Wimbledon champion Boris Becker, brought in by Djokovic at the start of the year to help end his run of 18 months without a major win

With seven Grand Slam titles to his name now, Djokovic moves alongside the likes of John McEnroe and Mats Wilander – 10 behind Federer at the top of the all-time list.

Federer, with Becker’s old foe Stefan Edberg in his corner, had served superbly throughout the tournament and it almost brought him an eighth title.

The Swiss took a desperately tight first set on the tie-break after saving two set points but, after a heavy tumble early in the second, Djokovic finally broke the fourth seed with a backhand pass to lead 2-1 – only the second time in the tournament the Swiss had dropped serve.

A huge fist pump in the direction of his player box followed when he saw out the set, and despite Federer landing 83% of first serves and hitting 13 aces in the third set, the Serb took the tie-break when Federer’s forehand let him down.

Djokovic was playing in his third Wimbledon final in four years, having lost to Andy Murray last year

Victory was within sight when Djokovic twice moved ahead in the fourth, but Federer recovered the first break with a magnificent forehand winner, and then launched an astonishing comeback from 5-2 down.

A nervous Djokovic slipped to 0-30 when serving for the title and could only watch while sprawled on the turf as Federer guided a forehand into the open court on break point.

Djokovic’s return game remained potent enough to earn a championship point at 5-4, only for Hawk-Eye to confirm that Federer’s serve had kept the contest alive.

In under 10 minutes, the Serb would go from the brink of victory to an unwelcome fifth set as another edgy, error-strewn service game allowed Federer to go on and close out the fourth.

Riding a wave of adrenalin and overwhelming support in the decider, the Swiss had his chance at 3-3 but failed to convert a break point.

Federer brilliantly played his way out of three break points in the following game but Djokovic was in the ascendancy again.

With the advantage of serving first in the decider, Djokovic made it to 5-4 and was able to hit freely, earning another two championship points and raising his arms in triumph when Federer netted a backhand on the second.

Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov outplayed Andy Murray on Centre Court to end the Briton’s Wimbledon title defence in the quarter-finals.

Dimitrov, 23, played superbly to win 6-1 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in two hours and one minute and reach his first Grand Slam semi-final.

Murray had been on a 17-match winning streak at Wimbledon and was looking to reach his sixth consecutive semi-final.

It is the first time since 2008 that he has failed to make the last four.

Dimitrov, seeded 11th, had too much with his big serve, variety of shots and athletic defence for an off-key Murray, who looked underpowered on serve and made a host of unforced errors.

The Scot, 27, made a strong start but could not convert a break point in a tight opening game, and Dimitrov grew in confidence from the opening four-minute test.

He had little trouble returning the Murray serve and, unlike the Briton’s previous opponents, was able to dictate in the longer exchanges.

Pinned way behind the baseline, Murray began to make errors, and it was an ambitious backhand when forced out wide that saw the Scot drop serve in game four.

If that drew a murmur from the afternoon crowd on Centre Court, there were a few gasps when Dimitrov broke to love for a 5-1 lead and served out the set confidently after just 25 minutes.

With his mix of pace and spin, the backhand slice proving especially effective, Dimitrov was moving his man all over the court and pushing hard for the crucial second break.

Murray looked to his box in disbelief after a poor smash into the net at 3-3 made it 18 errors to just five from Dimitrov, and the pressure told when he sliced a backhand wide to fall behind again.

The match was now slipping away from the champion and he finally reacted, taking advantage of the first signs of edginess from his opponent to convert from 0-30 and get back on level terms.

Murray was still on the back foot, however, gasping for breath and urging the crowd to get behind him after winning a pulsating 31-stroke rally at 4-4, 30-30, and then fending off two break points at 5-5.

Reaching the tie-break might have felt like a minor victory for Murray, but Dimitrov was undeterred and again dominated the key moments, coming up with a backhand pass, a drop volley, and a terrific lunging backhand volley from 4-4.

Murray had recovered from two sets down at the same stage last year, but Dimitrov was a tougher proposition than Fernando Verdasco.

There was a sense of inevitability when the Briton double-faulted to drop serve in game six of the third set, and another double fault brought up two match points for the Bulgarian two games later.

Murray saw off the first with the kind of forehand winner he had been searching for all afternoon, but he could only find the net moments later and his reign as champion was over.

Australian teenager Nick Kyrgios caused a sensational upset as he beat world number one Rafael Nadal to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

The 19-year-old wildcard’s huge serve helped him to a 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory on his Centre Court debut, and he will play Milos Raonic next.

Ranked 144, Kyrgios is the first man outside the top 100 to beat a world number one at a Grand Slam since 1992.

Nadal, 27, has failed to make the last eight at Wimbledon since 2011.

He lost in the second round two years ago, the first round last year, and now experiences the kind of defeat not suffered by someone at the top of the rankings since Jim Courier’s loss to world number 193 Andrei Olhovskiy at Wimbledon 22 years ago.

The Spaniard had lost the first set in each of his first three matches before recovering to win in four, but could not repeat the effort against a rampant Kyrgios.

Despite being tipped for greatness by the likes of Andy Murray and Pat Cash in recent weeks, Kyrgios had only claimed his first top-50 win last week when he saved nine match points to beat Richard Gasquet in the second round.

But firing down aces, racing between points and leaping in celebration, the young Australian took Centre Court by storm.

“I was in a bit of a zone out there and didn’t really notice the crowd,” Kyrgios told BBC Sport. “I was struggling a little on return but I worked my way into it and I served really well throughout, so am very happy.

“You have to believe that you can win the match from the start and I definitely did. I am playing really well on grass.”

Nadal pressed as best he could in the face of a barrage, lining up a forehand at 30-30 in game six only to see a backhand rocket back past him, and his opponent leap and punch the air in celebration.
John McEnroe on Kyrgios

Kyrgios saw his opponent save two set points on serve before calmly hammering an ace out wide to clinch it.

When Kyrgios hit an outrageous winner between his legs in the second set, it appeared he could do no wrong, and Nadal had failed to win a point on the Australian’s first serve as they headed towards a second tie-break.

That run came to an end when Kyrgios fell 30-40 down at 6-5, and after saving a set point – and first break point – with another ace, he could only find the net as Nadal leapt on his opportunity.

A huge fist pump illustrated the relief felt by the two-time champion, but the rhythm of the match did not alter.

The third set followed a similar pattern, with Nadal looking marginally more likely to break, but again Kyrgios grabbed his chance as the tie-break sped by.

When a set point arrived, the teenager stepped in on a second serve and blasted a forehand return that a scrambling Nadal failed to recover.

Kyrgios stood, arms raised in celebration, and Nadal trooped back to his chair knowing he was facing an early exit for the third year running despite having not yet dropped serve.

Two heavy backhands helped the wildcard finally make the breakthrough to move 3-1 ahead in the fourth set, and he powered through to the finish line, sealing the win of his life with ace number 37.
