A former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hanna Tetteh, has said the government’s ‘Ghana ‘Beyond Aid’ agenda is good for achieving self-sufficiency and prosperity, but it must be a medium-term goal, saying it cannot be achieved in “the remaining two years of this government”.

Although some persons in the opposition National Democratic Congress [NDC], have punched holes into the vision, Hanna Tetteh in a twitter post  said the vision must be pursued in a “bipartisan and inclusive manner” because it is about Ghana and not the governing New Patriotic Party [NPP].

Hanna Tetteh made the remark in response to Citi FM’s tweet about the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, calling on directors of the various Ministries, Departments and Agencies not to sabotage the ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ initiative.

[contextly_sidebar id=”YfI8BpJI5A1rqc3GhApz2ohMfApiOWRI”]“Our Chief Directors and other heads of ministries, departments and agencies who are at the helm of affairs have the arduous task of leading your respective institutions towards the success of these programs,” Bawumia said when he addressed the Chief Directors at a recent dialogue session.

Hanna Tetteh also urged the governing party to put Ghana first while seeking to make the vision possible.

About Ghana Beyond Aid

Since he assumed office, Akufo-Addo has reiterated his resolve to grow the country’s economy from one of dependence on foreign aid to independence, and ensuring its development using local resources.

Nana Akufo-Addo, who has on various national and international platforms emphasized his belief that Ghana, like many other African countries, is endowed with enormous resources to guarantee its growth, recently caught global attention when he made a strong case for his position at an event which had French President Emmanuel Macron as a guest.

Many have declared their support for the agenda which the government says is without a timeline, but hopes that it becomes a paradigm and an approach that will ensure the country is able to internally mobilize enough resources to finance its major policy and programs.

Ghana aid mantra a mere rhetoric – Amissah-Arthur

Some members of the opposition National Democratic Congress have also been expressing their views on the vision.

Former Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur described it  as a mere rhetoric.

“I’m comfortable if ‘Ghana Beyond Aid’ is saying we will only borrow for capital investment and not recurrent obligation. But the problem has not been defined for me to understand it. It is just the rhetoric. It sounds nice, but what goes into it? People will support it, if they understand what the objective is. As at now, everybody is left to define it how he understands it, and then to decide to support it or to oppose it,” he said.

Ghana Beyond Aid: ‘We won’t say no to gifts’ – Oppong Nkrumah

The government has clarified that its ‘Ghana Beyond Aid agenda is not intended to reject support from donors, but rather depend on local resources for the execution of its planned programs.

A Deputy Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who made the statement on the Eyewitness News on Thursday said the government had outlined major policy pillars to drive the agenda by ensuring that enough resources were generated locally to enable the government carry out all its major developmental programs.

The President-elect’s representatives on the Transition team are entitled to forfeit allowances and other benefits which accompany their work, government’s Spokesperson on the team, Hanna Tetteh has said.

The President-elect’s team said the gesture formed part of measures to save what they call an ailing economy from further tumbling.

The working committees and the nine members from the side of the president-elect are reported to have declined sitting allowances, lunch and other beverages, according to their spokesperson, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

hannah-tetteh

Ms. Tetteh, however said so far, no sitting allowances have been paid to any member of the Transition team adding that, since the handing over notes were made available, no meeting of the full membership of the transition team has been held.

In a Facebook post, Ms. Tetteh indicated that “since the handing over notes were made available by the Government side of the Transition team, no meeting of the full membership of the transition team has been held. Sub-committees have been at work holding meetings, and the incoming administration side of the transition team has been working from the Accra International Conference Centre.”

She added that “no sitting allowances have been paid to any member of the transition team (both for the current and incoming administration). From the beginning of the Transition process provision for snacks & lunch were made by the Office of the President and were available only for members of the transition team working from the Accra International Conference Centre.”

“If the incoming administration has taken the position that they do not want to have such provision made any longer that is entirely their prerogative. We will continue to work for a smooth transition of political power from one administration to the next,” Ms Tetteh added.

The spokesperson for government’s transition team, Hanna Tetteh, has said she is not aware of any last minute contracts being awarded by the outgoing National Democratic Congress (NDC), administration days after it lost the election.

The president-elect’s representative on the transition team, Yaw Osafo Marfo, expressed this concern, among others, on Wednesday morning, where he asked for some clarity from government.

[contextly_sidebar id=”jVNW8dhH5QEEkFI9ojj3qjobQubus0Oz”]But speaking to the press after the plenary session of the transition team on Wednesday, Ms. Tetteh said, “I am not aware of any contracts being awarded, I am not aware of the sale of government properties.”

On the other hand, she indicated that she was aware of an advertisement in some newspapers announcing the opening of recruitment for the Ghana Armed forces.

Ms. Tetteh, however, said  it was unlikely that “the recruitment exercise will be concluded before January 7, in which case the incoming administration will have the responsibility and have the oversight to see how the exercise is concluded.”

“The question really is to make sure that whatever exercise takes place, takes place in a transparent manner and that if there are any concerns that the transition team wishes to raise, one would hope that it will be addressed,” she added.

Osafo Marfo not being alarmist

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson for the President-elect’s side, Mustapha Hamid, said the earlier concerns raised by Mr. Osafo Marfo were only to draw the attention of the outgoing team for redress.

“We take it that it is a concern that he [Osafo Marfo] expressed in order that they would address them. We were not really looking for answers. It was just a concern to say that; please look at this for us and I guess that they understood the language.”

“He didn’t put it to them as if he telling was them a matter of fact. He said this is what is in the air, in the press and so on. If it is true, please let’s stop it. If it is not true, so be it,” Mr. Hamid explained.

Ms. Tetteh, who is the Foreign Affairs minister polled 25, 664  representing 46.45% to Mr. Andah’s 28, 867   representing 52.24%.

The third candidate, Alan Barnes Yawson, of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) polled  228  votes.

The seat returns to the NPP for only the second time under the fourth republic after Oppey Abbey won it for the NPP for a term in 2004.

The campaign period running into the election will be remembered for the accusations of sexism on the part of Mr. Andah after he challenged Ms. Tetteh, a divorcee, to showcase her husband the constituents like he did his wife.

Mr. Andah remained unapologetic despite widespread condemnation of his behavior and he recived backing from the regional executives of the NPP who said the then MP aspirant could not cannot be faulted for the comments.

According to NPP, Ms. Tetteh drew first blood by describing Mr. Andah as irresponsible for because he was sacked from all the companies I worked with.

This would be the second time Ms. Tetteh is to exit the Awutu Senya seat, but first time she will do so after an election loss after she did not contest after her sitting for four years from 2000 to 2004.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, has said it is too early for Ghana to take a second look at its diplomatic relationship with the United States of America, following the election of Republican Candidate Donald Trump as President.

The American business mogul, Donald Trump of the Republican Party on Wednesday, beat his closest contender, Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, in what many described as a tough election with an unexpected result.

tRUMP

There are fears that President-elect Donald Trump will roll out some policies that may affect the country’s relationship with developing countries.

But speaking to Citi News, Hannah Tettteh argued that, America’s President-elect is yet to formally outline his policy initiatives towards Africa as President of the USA, thereby making it improper  at this point, for government to consider a review of its diplomatic ties with that country.

“We really don’t have much to go by to judge what his reaction to Africa will be. It is early days yet. All we can do is to congratulate him on his victory and then wait to see who will appoint as his Secretary of State.”

“His Secretary of State is the equivalent of Foreign Minister and once we see who he has appointed as his secretary of state and he gives a better indication of the main focal areas of his foreign policy; then we will be able to make a better assessment of what the relationship will have for Africa. But right now; it will be premature to make an assessment. When President Trump lays out his policies and we have clarity , we will be in a better position to assess how our relationship with the US will be managed going forward.”

A parliamentary debate in the Awutu Senya West Constituency in the Central Region was postponed because of the presence of some National Democratic Congress (NDC) women clad in red at the venue to protest against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the area George Andah.

The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) postponed the debate because Mr. Andah was reportedly insecure with the presence of the protesters.

[contextly_sidebar id=”iRQFrqNm4KGZxANncgCvmruz8CvsAHSA”]According to the incumbent Member of Parliament for the area, Hanna Tetteh, the women were there to protest against George Andah, who had attacked her single marital status by challenging her to show her husband to her constituents.

Madam Tetteh indicated that a number of NDC members in the constituency had taken offense to Mr. Andah’s comments, of which he has remained unapologetic, though she herself stated that she is not disturbed by Mr. Andah’s campaign attacks.

“Quite frankly I couldn’t care less about Mr. Andah’s attacks on me. They are not my problem and I don’t even consider them to be an issue. If that is the way he wants to do his campaign that is his choice. I will do my campaign differently.”

“But there are some people in this constituency who are members of my party who have taken offense and for that reason; a number of the NDC women who were planning to attend the debate had worn funeral clothes as a sign of protest,” she said.

Concerning the cancellation of the debate, Madam Tetteh revealed that from the discussions their NCCE platform, it appeared that Mr. Andah was concerned that protesters “constituted propaganda and he [Andah] would not like to see that present during the debate.”

“For this reason the NCCE decided to suspend the debate and postpone it to another day,” she said.

The Central Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has moved to defend its parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya West, George Andah, following his recent challenge to Hanna Tetteh to show her husband to constituents.

Mr. Andah at a mini rally held at Bawjiase in the Central Region last week, challenged the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hanna Tetteh, to show her husband to the constituents.

“I came here with my wife, and children. Please tell Hanna to also come and show us her husband,” Mr. Andah said.

[contextly_sidebar id=”aJ1OqhitVFUfwGoJwKZO65cr2V8WWYM6″]Many have taken to social media to describe his action as chauvinist, and an insult to unmarried women seeking political office.

But the regional executives of the NPP say George Andah cannot be faulted for the comments as Hanna Tetteh was the first to launch an attack on Mr. Andah.

Richard Takyi, the NPP’s Central Regional Communications Director told Citi News George Andah’s comment was “charitable”.

“In the first place, it was Hanna Tetteh who accused George Andah wrongly, calling him an irresponsible man and accused him of being a womanizer without any basis. In my view, George Andah gave Hanna Tetteh a fair response. He was even charitable with Hanna Tetteh,” he added.

Andah’s attack on Hanna Tetteh’s marital status primitive – NDC

Meanwhile, the Central Regional Secretariat of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has in a strongly worded statement condemned what it calls “retrogressive” and “primitive” the attack on the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Awutu Senya West constituency, Hanna Tetteh.

The NDC said it will “never condone any irresponsible comment against single mothers, unmarried women or career women who are in politics to advance the cause of women and children.”

George Andah has however indicated that, his challenge to Hanna Tetteh was misunderstood and therefore sees no need to apologize.

The National Youth Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku, has urged the youth of Awutu Senya West constituency to vote massively for the NPP parliamentary candidate for the area, George Andah, and the NPP Flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaking at a mini rally at Bontrase, he declared that time was up for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), and its parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya West, Hanna Tetteh.

npp-rally-1
Sammy Awuku (L) and George Andah (R)

He contended that, Hanna Tetteh, the incumbent, has taken the youth for granted for the past eight years hence his call for change..

According to him, Hanna Tetteh has spent a combined 12 years in positions of influence ranging from her time as an MP, to her time in the Foreign Affairs and Trade Ministries, but has still not been able to lobby for basic development projects for her constituents.

“For 12 years, somebody hasn’t been able to work on the Bontrase market. Somebody hasn’t been able ensure there is running water in Bontrase. Somebody hasn’t been able to ensure there is even a public toilet.”

Mr. Awuku reminded the constituents that, should the NPP win the election, every constituency would be given $1 million dollars.

“If you change this into Ghanaian money, it is GHc 4 million or 40 billion old cedis. In our first term, Awutu Senya West would receive 160 billion old cedis,” the Youth Organiser explained to the ecstatic crowd.

He also delivered a message from the NPP’s Nana Akufo-Addo.

“Nana Addo says I should tell you that, we shall work on your market. Nana Addo says I should tell you that, we shall work on a public toilet for you. Nana Addo says I should tell you that within his first four years, the pipes will flow in Bontrase. Time is up, and we must tell the NDC to leave. Time is up for them and we must call NPP to come in.”

According to him, his comment was misunderstood and that he doesn’t have to apologize.

[contextly_sidebar id=”iYHhCCBL9hlvNJVngfPVksPsBAf3cWrK”]“If I bring Nana Addo to Bawjiase and I ask you to bring John Mahama to Bawjiase would that be something you should say I should apologize for?,” he quizzed.

Mr. Andah at a mini rally at Bawjiase in the Central Region this week, threw the open challenge to Hanna Tetteh to introduce her husband to the constituents.

“I came here with my wife, and children. Please tell Hanna to also come and show us her husband,” he said.

Some social media commentators have criticized Mr. Andah for the comments, describing it as misogynistic and chauvinistic.

Others have also urged him to render an apology to the Member of Parliament, and publicly retract it since his comment is considered sexist, and an insult unmarried women seeking leadership particularly in politics.
