Alleged computer hacker Lauri Love has won his High Court appeal against his extradition to the US.

Mr Love, 33, from Stradishall, Suffolk, was first arrested in October 2013 on suspicion of hacking into FBI, US Central Bank and Nasa systems.

Appeal judges said extradition would be “oppressive by reason of his physical and mental condition”.

They urged the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to prosecute Mr Love, who has Aspergers syndrome, in England.

Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett and Mr Justice Ouseley said Mr Love, who also has depression, “did not seek impunity for the acts alleged against him, but contended that he should be tried and, if convicted, sentenced in the United Kingdom”.

They said: “We accept that the evidence shows that the fact of extradition would bring on severe depression, and that Mr Love would probably be determined to commit suicide, here or in America.”

Mr Love is alleged to have stolen huge amounts of data from US agencies, including the Federal Reserve, the US army, the defence department, Nasa and the FBI in a spate of online attacks in 2012 and 2013.

However, his supporters had warned if he was extradited there was a “high risk” he would kill himself.

The judges urged the Crown Prosecution Service to work with US authorities because of “the gravity of the allegations in this case, and the harm done to the victims”.

They added that “if proven, these are serious offences indeed”.

The United States authorities now have 14 days to lodge a request for an appeal hearing at the UK Supreme Court.

Everton midfielder James McCarthy will miss the rest of the season after suffering a double leg fracture in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom.

The 27-year-old was taken off on a stretcher after a tackle on Albion’s Salomon Rondon in the second half.

“It’s a tibia and fibula fracture compounded. A very nasty injury,” said Everton boss Sam Allardyce.

Rondon was distraught after seeing the injury to McCarthy, who hurt himself as he prevented the forward from shooting.

Neither player was at fault in what was an accidental collision.

Republic of Ireland international McCarthy had returned from an injury lay-off at the end of December and this was only his third league game of the season.

“We had just worked hard to get him back to fitness. It’s a loss to us until the end of the season – it happens in the game of football but not often that severe,” added Allardyce.

Striker Rondon was “absolutely devastated” by McCarthy’s injury.

“I feel really sorry for James,” the Venezuela international said.

“Even if the move had resulted in a goal, I would have preferred not to score if it meant an opponent avoided suffering such a terrible injury.

“I wish James a speedy recovery and hope to see him back playing again soon.”

Describing Rondon’s emotional reaction to the injury, Albion boss Alan Pardew said: “I saw his reaction straight away. He must’ve heard something – sometimes it does really affect you and it did it take us a while to get him round and focused again.

“Our thoughts go with James and we wish a speedy recovery to him.”

Teenagers caught carrying out hacking and cyber-attacks could soon be attending a rehab camp that aims to divert them away from a life of crime.

The first weekend camp for offenders was held in Bristol this month as part of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) work with young computer criminals.

Attendees learned about the responsible use of cyber-skills and got advice about careers in computer security.

If the trial proves successful, it will be rolled out across the UK.

The people picked to attend the residential weekend were known to police because they had been caught carrying out one or more computer crimes, said Ethan Thomas, an operations officer in the NCA’s Prevent team, which engages with young cyber-offenders.

‘Attacks, attacks, attacks’

Hundreds of fledgling cyber-criminals have been contacted by the NCA as part of its Prevent work. Some received letters warning them that their online activity had been spotted and some were visited at home by officers.

The seven young men attending the weekend camp had gone further than many the NCA is aware of. They had either been arrested, visited by officers because they were spotted using tools or techniques that break UK computer misuse laws or been cautioned by police because of offences committed at school.

They had been caught defacing websites, knocking servers offline and carrying out hack attacks that let them take over restricted networks.

One attendee said an early fascination with numbers and his accidental “hack” of a primary school network that locked everyone out of the system, got him hooked on computers.

The skills he built up were put to malicious use later on, he said, because they were a way to escape the bullying he suffered at school.

He used technical vulnerabilities to break into networks by exploiting vulnerabilities and used psychological tricks, known as social engineering, to force people to cough up details that helped him burrow further in.

“I manipulated people’s feelings and thoughts to my own advantage,” he said. “It was all attacks, attacks, attacks and nothing on the good side.”

One attack on a company website was done just for “mischief” but left the organisation behind it with a hefty bill as it struggled to recover.

“I didn’t mean to do it,” said the young man. “I had no intention to cause harm.”

The investigation into the attack led police to the teenager, who was then arrested. He was given a two-year suspended sentence along with a series of other conditions – one of which was to attend the weekend rehab event.

The Mac and iOS software developer Panic has had the source code for several of its apps stolen.

Panic founder Steven Frank admitted in a blog post that it happened after he downloaded an infected copy of the video encoding tool Handbrake.

He said there was no sign that any customer data was accessed and that Panic’s web server was not affected.

Users have been warned to download Panic’s apps only from its website or the Apple App Store.

Panic is the creator of web editing and file transfer apps Coda and Transmit, and the video game Firewatch.

‘Entirely compromised’

On 2 May Handbrake was hacked, with the Mac version of the app on one of the site’s download servers replaced by a malicious copy.

The infected app was discovered and removed on 6 May.

In what Mr Frank called “a case of extraordinarily bad luck”, he downloaded the malicious version of Handbrake and launched it “without stopping to wonder why Handbrake would need admin privileges… when it hadn’t before”.

“And that was that, my Mac was completely, entirely compromised in three seconds or less.”

The attacker then used his password to access other private files and copy the source code for several of Panic’s products stored on the infected computer.

Ransom demand

The theft was confirmed when Panic received an email containing some of the files and demanding a ransom for the return of the complete code.

“We’re working on the assumption that there’s no point in paying,” Mr Frank wrote, saying that “the attacker has no reason to keep their end of the bargain”.

The FBI is investigating the incident and Panic has been working with Apple to make sure that no malicious or fake versions of the apps get into the App Store.

“I feel like a monumental idiot for having fallen for this,” Mr Frank admitted.

“It’s a good reminder though — no matter how experienced you might be with computers, you’re human and mistakes are easily made.”

On Friday, the Shadow Brokers hacking group published a cache of documents revealing Windows hacking tools allegedly belonging to the NSA. But Microsoft said it has already patched the flaws.

Previous updates protect customers from the vulnerabilities listed in the dump, the company said.

“We’ve investigated and confirmed that the exploits disclosed by the Shadow Brokers have already been addressed by previous updates to our supported products,” a Microsoft spokesperson told CNNTech. “Customers with up-to-date software are already protected.”

Microsoft said three exploits don’t reproduce on “supported platforms,” meaning people should upgrade to Windows 7 or a newer version.

The documents published by the hacking group list exploits for Windows servers and Windows computers. Researchers were able to replicate some of the hacks. In a blog post late Friday, Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) listed specific updates — including one released as recently as March — that protect users against the vulnerabilities.

Windows users should make sure their software is up-to-date. Microsoft offers Auto Update to tell you when updates are available for your machine. Here’s how to turn it on.

Matthew Hickey, founder of Hacker House whoo reproduced the hacks, said businesses who delay patches for operational purposes should make sure their software is up to date.

“Consumers should ensure auto updates ran on desktops and that the personal firewall is enabled to prevent attacks,” Hickey told CNNTech in an email.

President-elect Donald Trump is less than enthusiastic about some senators’ suggestion that Russia ― and perhaps even Vladimir Putin himself ― should be sanctioned for interfering in the U.S. elections, telling reporters Wednesday that it’s time people move on.

For Trump, the real culprit isn’t the Russian president or his hackers. It’s computers and technology.

“I think we ought to get on with our lives,” Trump said Wednesday, according to the pool report. He was at his Mar-a-Lago resort, standing next to boxing promoter Don King. “I think that computers have complicated lives very greatly. The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what is going on. We have speed, we have a lot of other things, but I’m not sure we have the kind the security we need. But I have not spoken with the senators and I will certainly will be over a period of time.”

U.S. intelligence agencies have been clear in saying that they have a pretty good idea of what’s going on. The FBI, CIA and the director of national intelligence have agreed that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections to help Trump beat DemocratHillary Clinton. Intelligence officials also recently told NBC News that they have “a high level of confidence” that Putin himself was involved in the covert operation.

“There will be bipartisan sanctions coming that will hit Russia hard, particularly Putin as an individual,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Wednesday.

When asked directly about Graham’s suggestion about sanctions on Putin, Trump replied Wednesday, “I don’t know what he’s doing. I haven’t spoken to Sen. Graham. … [A]s you know, he ran against me.”

Although a bipartisan group of lawmakers have called for a special select panel to probe cyber-warfare threats from Russia and other U.S. adversaries, including Iran and China, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has insisted any investigation will stay within the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Trump has long had a cozy relationship with Putin, going out of his way to praise him during the campaign and resisting joining the chorus of criticism over Russia’s involvement in the elections. He has said the idea that Russia tried to help him win was “ridiculous.”

“Nobody really knows, and hacking is very interesting,” he said on “Fox News Sunday” earlier this month. “Once they hack, if you don’t catch them in the act you’re not going to catch them. They have no idea if it’s Russia or China or somebody. It could be somebody sitting in a bed someplace. I mean, they have no idea.”

During the presidential campaign, emails from the Democratic National Committee and the private account of John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman, were hacked and released on WikiLeaks. The DNC emails, in particular, caused turmoil within the party as supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), citing exchanges in the released emails, accused party officials of tipping the scales for Clinton during the primary campaign.

Trump rarely, if ever, uses computers, and despite his savviness with social media, it’s not clear he understands much about how they work.
